Looking like not putting England in again last night was a mistake by Smith, as was using up all the appeals.
Probably but you still have to bowl the right length and ( sadly from my perspective ) the length your guys bowled is not our natural length so you may have got away and we could have lost a tired bowler.

Glimmer of hope.

But Root's not good at converting 50s...

If he can, and Ali and Bairstow show what they can do it might just be possible... But it's still for the crims to lose.

I agree with Vaughan - performing as they did last night/today just makes it all the more frustrating that they were so bad at the start of the test. (And at the end of the Brisbane one!).

I think today's play demonstrates the unique appeal of test cricket.

crepuscular

(Might not be exactly correct, but it's a good word!)

I actually prefer it to watching it on the telly sometimes. It’s iconic and a fantasticly great British tradition.
It's one of those things that is completely pointless but completely brilliant at the same time!

It amazes me how they remember details of innings - 'Weren't you out like that once Geoffrey?" "Ah, Jaipur 1972, Patel with slow left arm over the wicket"

I can't remember what I did last week, never mind remembering a specific ball out of 000s 40/50 years ago!

Now then Garg, all those years of cheering for the "aggressive" declarations and chancing your arm for the win...well it looks like Steve Smith has been reading your posts!

  • Thats* why you dont bloody gamble in Test cricket!
Dont know about everybody else but there was only one topic of conversation at work this morning and blame was suitably apportioned to the idiot who asked how many wickets down 10mins to the end of play...

Woakes gone. closely followed by Root. And the worst thing? Having to listen to that utter C Pietersen clearly crowing in delight on Channel 9. What a total ahole that guy is. I hope they ex communicate him.

Well, at least your not working in an office full of Aussies, esp when England collapsed as quick as that again.

Another memorable collapse. We did so well to get ourselves into a good position going into the final day aswell.

Imagine Larwood in 1933. Probably as quick as Thommo or Marshall, Holding etc.. but crappy pitches, no fielding restrictions, thin gloves and pads, no helmets or chest pads etc... No wonder the Aussies whinged. Suthol will remember, he was a young clubbie at the time.
Yeah a bit pedestrian but useful

Root is looking out of his depth.

How the team can get itself into a decent position and then chuck it I don't know, but there have been demos of this for a while... Albeit previously from one test to another rather than an innings (or even a session).

He got all upset when people said they got complacent over the summer. Sorry Root but you and your team appear to be doing it again.

Winning this one was going to be a tall order after the first innings, but collapsing like that is poor...

(Opening batsmen too... Who would ever have thought that would be an issue for us after the summer frown).

Great result, and well deserved for Australia. Things are lining up for the Ashes to come home.

Disappointing collapse again after the initial outside chance, they were bound to be fired up in the morning though.

Both captains made decisions that had some pros but a lot of cons too. Australia just played better especially the batsmen. England have yet to get a century and I think just one 50 partnership so far. It was slightly odd that Root did not put Bairstow in yesterday rather than Woakes as he needs to be higher up.

We actually need Stokes there, I can understand if he was in court in England but he is actually playing in NZ. If he is playing in NZ he might as well be playing in Aus. Surely the shock of being dropped will mean he has learnt his lesson. He has kept his nose clean in NZ....

We do look weak though. They have such a good bowling attack, and although their batsmen are not as good, there is enough quality for someone to pop up with a hundred.

Perth is going to suit them too..... hmmmm

You mean the South African guy, with a South African accent, who went to school in South Africa, played all his cricket in South Africa and qualified to play for England so he could play test cricket? And you're surprised he has little allegiance to England?? #shockedface

Eng just aren't playing test cricket to their potential - not that I am complaining!.

Many of them can bat. They are playing quick bowling that doesn't swing much - but they aren't batting with test match patience. Woakes and Overton showed what can be done with patient batting. Imagine if the top order showed that discipline. You need at least one guy to step up and make a big score.

It cost them both test matches - had they occupied the crease for another 30 overs in each first innings so far, they would have fared better.

Their bowlers can bowl. But again, not bowling the right length.

I still see Lyon as being the main difference between the bowling attacks.

Well as KP would be the first name on my team sheet if I was an selector, I suppose I am biased.

KP taking the Aussies apart in 2005 is probably a cricket highlight up there with Botham at Headingly.

Anyway, we lost, were outplayed in both disciplines. Our top six only works if between Cook and Root one of them makes a ton.

I think Lyon might be right about ending careers, I can't see Cook getting picked again if he fails to pass 50 in 10 innings, and at the moment that looks a sporting bet.
