389/8, the collapse is in full swing. Maybe it's for the best, still a good score and leaves plenty of time to skittle the cons twice. biggrin

Yeah - tailed off there, Ali needed to get a score to really make the point. Aussie reply looking pretty decent so far. Smith is just in great form right now.

Not sure what has happened to Broad here, should be very much his kind of pitch.

England had the first day, Crims took the second.

This could still go either way

Very negative fields by Root this morning. Aussies just milking the runs. 238/3. Jimmy Anderson opened with one slip and a deep point! I'm sure if roles were reversed Smith would have opened with 3 slips and some aggression.

314/4 at lunch. England totally devoid of ideas or inspiration. The only bowler who looked like taking a wicket was Moeen (who took the only one) and he was pulled after 3 overs.

I suspect it'll end up 5-0, which is a worse reflection of the team's physical skills.

It's a bit like watching the England rugby team under Lancaster.

well credit to the batsmen, those are both great innings.

However we are now bowling Malan...

I worried about Woakes coming onto this, good heart but not quick enough or accurate enough to be a test bowler on a batting track. Jimmy not getting wickets, but still has good control. Woakes serves a four ball every over.

We will struggle from here.

Turns out that maybe we could have done with a couple more runs.... biggrin
Seems unlikely we will get Smith out before Christmas.

Who’s looking like he probably should have bowled earlier.

We will be relying on Cook to bat all the fifth day....

Though I will just be happy if he survives tommorow evening session.

Just not good enough. Aussies look better all round

That was a fun day's cricket.
How big a lead will Aus want, before sending the poms in to bat?
Will 250 do?

Right, that is how you play test cricket !

305/4 on day one. Fantastic effort and really sets the match up. YJB and Malan will have lifted the spirits of the team massively. Really give Jimmy A and Broad something to work with.

Foot on the throat stuff, now we just need to keep it there. Aussie bowlers put real shift in today and will be feeling it tomorrow.

Great stuff, hope MV gets some stick from the team (or a headbutt/drink poured over him)
Unfortunately MV has been still given the chance to give the team some stick, as we have done this page and the TMS crew were very downbeat today. Listening it was very hard work too.

To be honest they are just repeating what we did but a little bit better, they did not get off to a good start either, but their partnership is just a percentage better. Their bowling is a percentage better too. The only part we are outplaying them is fielding and DRS.

We could still get a draw, but it will need one of the top 3 batsmen to get 100+ to tire the bowlers so the middle order can shine again before the lower order collapses again. Time for Cook to actually bat well. I think Stoneman is more likely now though. Cook out for less than 20 ?? I see it. I also see him retiring after this series. I doubt he will bugger off like Swann though.

Actually some of the Swann comments for TMS have been annoying, telling them what not to do when he did the same in 2015 series. Boycott whining on for hours and hours at 5am is tiring too. My ears felt they had just done a 10 over stint at 155km/h ...

Also, my "lucky" Duke cricket ball I keep in the bed with the headphones, which has now seen 7 Aus Ashes defeats on the trot, got stolen by my dog at 7am and he has now "tampered" with it more than a South African sucking on a sweet .. frown

Maybe this will change our fortune and we will get a draw, I am still optimistic about this, especially if delay tomorrow morning with the weather. Maybe it will swing more as well if morning dew levels up when they get started. Anderson has had most swing with the older ball so far in the series for what little he has got.

Sad to see no Vic (Jimmy) here and Billy the trumpet who has been replaced by a Australian trombone player who does not play, apparently he's back for the Boxing Day test. The beer prices are roughly $10 aud a schooner 450ml v 570ml (pint) so £7.50 a pint so no wonder the army are not so Barmy !

Being down under shouldn't that picture be upside down? Or has there been a change due to global warming?

I bought it before the last series down under. Here it was at the start of this series, still looking pretty new even after 5 tests, thanks to being rubbed up and down on a duvet at 3am in the morning

See today, after the dog got it. I mounted it on an ashes style podium. It might be presented to the 2nd place team this year I hope as the wooden spoon to a Mr S. Smith of Outback, NSW.

Do you think if I replace it with a "lucky" kookaburra Australia might lose the next 7 tests down there? I have to admit having my hands on a kookaburra in the bed at 3am in the morning feels a bit bloody perverted and kinkly to be honest, but I am willing to give it a try. Might have to wear wicket keepers gloves to stop myself going blind....

Come on England!
