You were (are?) a cat 3 player, so that's the correct hcp adjustment for every shot under CSS.

The cat 4s are 0.4, cat 2 and cat 1 are 0.2 and 0.1 respectively.

They were just applying the normal CONGU rules.
Oh yes, not grumbling, was just recounting my memories of 20+ years ago. Thanks for explaining about the categories, I'd forgotten about them. I was a "3" but sadly now, struggle to play off 28 due to my lack of playing time these days.

A warning to all out there, being stubborn and persisting with a club manufacturer that doesn't make clubs any more is a right PITA.

Currently on the hunt for an X Flex Shaft for my Vapor Fly 3 Wood, and rocking horse st comes to mind. I'm basically having to cannibalise my 5 Wood to get the Nike specific adapter out.

So if anyone's got a VF 3 Wood with an Extra Stiff shaft out there, please let me know hehe

Are you a member of this Facebook group? It’s pretty good for sourcing most stuff.

Could you not buy an adapter like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NIKE-COVERT-VRS-FLEX-FL...

The hunt for the correct shaft? Plenty on Ebay

Unfortunately Nike changed the adapter for the Vapor Fly (the last FW they released), and find the right adapter on eBay is like hunting hen's teeth. I found one for £20, no way of telling if it was genuine though. So the place who sorted it for me took the adapter out of my 5 wood and fitted that to a shaft they had lying round to try - a Mitsubishi Javln FX X-Flex. I was a bit dubious as I hadn't heard of it and the reviews are a little mixed, but it works well with the Vapor Fly.

Biggest problem I had was spin, went on Trackman last Monday and whereas my Driver was in the 2500 - 3000 rpm range, the 3 Wood was peaking over 5000. My Angle of Attack was negative, which I'm working on with my pro, but even when struck properly it was still spinning up too much. Haven't had the new shaft on Trackman to get an idea of numbers, but on the course it's great, long, straight and cuts through the wind like my Driver and 2 iron now.

Of course now I'm looking for another shaft to put in my 5 wood smile Going to get creative with this one though, and get another 3 wood shaft and put it in the 5 wood head to make a kind of 4 wood with useable trajectory. Already works well with the Javln, and somewhere else I play has a Whiteboard for sale for £30, so plans are afoot smile

Cheers for the Heads Up on that Facebook Group, have applied to join. Even though I'm pretty happy with my current bag, always happy to see if any curios (such as stuff from Nike's Oven) turns up smile

Over the last three days we have had a national Grand Prix at our club, and watching the players was a great privilege. Yesterday was 3C, wind from the north at 30/40 mph, yet one amateur shot 67. Here are a few photos I took. The ladies winner was -6 over the three days and we had one young girl of 12 playing off 10 allowed to play by the Federation because she shows such promise. What surprised me was the number of one and two irons in evidence. If you want more, I have 800, so let me know.

PS. I'll get around to turning the photos later!

Thanks for posting, we often have these sorts of days at The Chase, on of the clubs I'm a member off, always good to see the new talent coming through - if profoundly irritating how much better than us they are hehe

As an aside, the wife treated us to a Golf and Spa day at The Mere on Saturday - had only been there for a conference, but was very impressed with the course. Challenging but not harsh, lots of room to bail out when I was getting a bit wild, and fast greens even at this time of year. Some of the houses around the course were impressive to say the least as well.

Last hole is a bd though, Par 5 up the side of the lake, with the green on the shore with nothing behind you to stop anything going long. Not too concerning until you find yourself in the bunker 30 yards from the green, with no backstop if you catch it thin (I did by about 4 feet).

Worth a play though imo.

Do any of the wise old birds on here know why woods have curved faces? Every time I look down at mine I feel unnerved by the possibility (it seems to me) of never hitting the ball in the 'right' place. Not a feeling I experience with flat-faced irons.

Roll and bulge ( vertical and lateral curvature) is supposed to help you.

When you hit the ball off centre on your driver/woods you get a gear effect on the ball which imparts draw/face spin. The curvature is there to start the ball further left/right to try and find fairway/target.

Eg. A toed drive will hook left. The roll and bulge starts the ball further right so the hook isn’t as damaging.

It also helps you with high/low strikes. Catch your driver high on the face and it will launch high and spin less. The low spin stops it ballooning in the air so you retain some distance. Catch it low and it will launch low but spin more to keep it in the air longer.

You’ll lose distance in all these scenarios, and really bad strikes anywhere on the face can be unsaveable, but roll and bulge does help you to an extent.

There’s hundreds of YouTube videos and websites that’ll explain gear effect better than I can.

Thank you, one of the better players I play with just gave me a similar explanation, very interesting.

Had my best ever round today, gross 73.
12 pars, 2 birdies, 3 bogeys and a double

45 points playing off my 12 handicap. Definitely didn't strike it as well as I can but kept the ball in play which makes a big difference and short game was decent

Good effort. Keeping the ball in sight does make a huge difference not just for the next shot but for general confidence levels. I had a similar experience on Bramshaw's Manor Course this week. Left the driver in the bag and stuck with the 3 wood and 4 iron. Last three holes killed me off a bit and somehow forgot the magic hitting technique I'd discovered on the field the day before redface but was otherwise pleased with the overall game.

That wasn’t in a competition I take it?

That’s a great round of golf...well done.

It does highlight why I’m looking forward to the world hcp system coming in. I waited a long time before getting my first membership/hcp of 9. I came down to 8 and hovered there for ages and am back up to 9 again. Without putting in a lot of time that I don’t have, I’d say I’m playing at about as high a level as I can. I can certainly shoot under par but 40+ pts is extremely rare for me and I certainly haven’t managed those scores in competition play. I had 37 at Torksey in Lincoln recently in a regional event off the tips and felt like I played out of my skin for that.

There are plenty at my club who do score really low though. There’s always someone off 13 or 14 that manages 42-44 even in really tough conditions. They must have managed under par rounds in practice...I find it unlikely that they’d have suddenly shot -7 for the first time in a comp.

It’s just the way the hcp system works under CONGU. Practice and play casual rounds for weeks, get better, those scores don’t get recorded, win your next comp by miles.

I’m hoping people under the world system will get levelled out a bit.

No it wasn't a competition. I'm a bit disaster prone in comps and always manage to destroy a good card with one terrible hole

Getting better all the time though. I shot 3 under for the last 8 holes in a 4bbb comp last week. Just a shame the first 10 holes weren't at that level and my partner had a mare

I can’t seem to avoid 3/4 silly holes at the moment. I seem to either make par or bogie with the odd birdie.... or a 7/8. Ruining my scoring.

77 today. Actual felt like I played better than the 73 the other day but nothing would drop with the putter, had 37 putts in total.

Enjoying it at the moment as I'm hitting it much straighter and my bad shots are only slightly offline instead of being off the planet. Hopefully this isn't just a flash in the pan and I can continue to improve in to next season

Terrible weather for part 1 of our place's three part winter comp, twosomes to start with, best ball Stableford. It was impossible to keep anything dry. Somehow we ended up with 41pts between us but hanging onto your club was the biggest issue.
