Just starting to get into golfing. Bought a set of titelist clubs from Ebay and taking beginner lessons. It is quite fun at the range, heading to a Texas scramble game for beginner next weekend, really looking forward to it.
Can't use the driver for toffee though
Forget you’ve even got a driver until you can break 100 mate. Starting out - they cause more harm than good! Enjoy the Scramble & welcome to the best game in the world! Can't use the driver for toffee though

I have been playing 4 months now and I got some great help from the guys here. Can't use the driver for toffee though
Have a look back about 10 / 12 pages for some great information and advice from them.
Went to the range tonight & had a whack on their new launch monitors. Had some good ball speeds with the driver. But want to speed it up! Does anyone have any good drills to increase speed they can share? I’ve just got back into the gym - so hopefully can gain a few MPH in there. But really want to get to a swing speed of 115mph with driver if I can, currently at about 105 & 150ish ball speed.

Pretty much what the coach said too, am ok with the 3 wood but not great yet. Have a look back about 10 / 12 pages for some great information and advice from them.
Oddly when I try to hit it harder I fluff it so focus is on form at the moment, hoping that will come later!

Go to admit a 10 mph gain may be on the optimistic side, but I fully approve of your attempt to have a go I seem to have gained speed with every club in the bag over the last 6 months - haven't been on Trackman to quantify it, but I do know that my PW has gone from 110 yards absolutely flat out to a consistent 135, with similar gains throughout the bag. For me it's just been a case of turning properly throughout impact - I was getting myself into a great position at the top of the backswing, then my arms took over, losing speed and coming over the top, with predictable results.
I've worked all winter on starting the downswing with my left leg, then rotating my body through impact with fairly impressive results - there's the distance gain I mentioned, plus I;ve gone from losing 3 or 4 balls a round to 1 ball every 3 or 4 rounds, which makes scoring MUCH easier Last 4 rounds have been - 1, +8, +2 and +1 - the +8 would have been similar but I dropped 5 shots in 4 holes, mostly through being 1 club out for my approach.
Such a great feeling when lessons start paying off though, even though in my case it's taken 2 years and several hundred golf balls
In terms of drills, the most valuable one I was taught was with an alignment stick - grasp it 6 inches from the end then swing it with your right arm, then listen for the noise as you swing it - I get a more high pitched noise (i.e the stick is travelling faster) if I swing it through with my shoulder and body than I do if I just use my arm. Awful description of it, but I hope you get the idea

Thanks mate. Used that drill RE the noise when i first started playing - maybe i'll give it another whack. Agree 10mph is optimistic, but got to have a goal! I'm hoping that losing weight (down a st already) & getting stronger will be at least half the battle.I seem to have gained speed with every club in the bag over the last 6 months - haven't been on Trackman to quantify it, but I do know that my PW has gone from 110 yards absolutely flat out to a consistent 135, with similar gains throughout the bag. It's nice when it all comes together and you start shooting better scores & losing less balls mate, makes the game far far more enjoyable. I'd always recommend getting lessons too, not enough people think they're worth it but they definitely are.
Anyone swinging a club in anger this week?
Bit of a bragging post but took bit of a sabbatical from work (the last 3 months) and the main aim was to play and improve my golf as much as possible.
Many hours on the practice chipping area, range sessions and rounds of golf has resulted in my handicap finally getting into single figures.
8.5 to be precise.
It was always my goal to get a single digit handicap and it feels bloody good!

I've now become a firm believer in spending money on lessons rather than new clubs every year - I mean new shiny is always nice, and I'm very much looking forward to purchasing a new hybrid in the next couple of weeks. However the feeling of sorting out a long term swing flaw is even nicer It's nice when it all comes together and you start shooting better scores & losing less balls mate, makes the game far far more enjoyable. Would love to get out and have a game but courses are patchy on how open they are round here, and the forecast doesn't look promising. Still a couple of weeks away from first medal, can't wait though.

Can't use the driver for toffee though
Hitting driver decent is 95% set up. You could have the best swing in the world but if you set up to driver wrong then you've got very little chance of hitting it where you want. In contrast you could set up in any number of weird ways with a 7 iron and still stand a chance of hitting it ok but not the case with a driver. Can't use the driver for toffee though
Easiest way to do it is set up to your target, not the ball. If you only focus on the ball I guarantee you will set up with your hips and shoulders massively open and you will be too far over the left side in terms of sternum/head position. All this does is encourage a swing from out to in across the ball with a downward attack angle and not a pretty outcome.
Look at the target while you set your feet and again as you grip the club and this will get everything in a much better position and give you a much better chance of hitting it.
