Er, only if we had more than 14 clubs in our bag old bean.

Or are you in the habit of surreptitiously adding clubs to opponents bags when they are not looking....?

Am I right in assuming he had not used the other putter?

The rule is clear; carry 15 clubs and you must declare one out of play before playing. Or, looked at another way, if I condoned the breach of rule I am disqualified for allowing a breach of rule. Take your pick.

The sheer density of The Rules is not an appealing aspect of the game for me. I welcome attempts to thin them out.

I won't accept anything but the full correct answer. And there is only one answer beer
Not strictly true.

He might have been carrying 14 clubs but one of those was non-conforming - a hot faced driver, for instance.

Penalty would be one hole deducted for each hole he carried it, with a maximum penalty of two holes. He'd be disqualified if he'd actually used it.

Does that translate to a fourball? 3 potential disqualifications?!

Dear oh dear. I want to play matchplay against you lot. You'd lose early doors! The answer is because I noticed on the 17th tee that he had 15 clubs in his bag. Before anyone comments, you can carry thirty if you want, but you must declare those over the maximum of 14 not in play. He had forgotten he had two putters in his bag, had not declared one out of play, and so the penalty is a loss of maximum two holes. If I had noticed on the 2nd and had won the 1st it is one hole being the maximum at that point. So he went from one up to one down on the 17th tee, then hit his drive out of bounds and lost the 17th. Game over. I bought the beers though, because it was the semi-final of the club scratch championship.
If I knew he hadn’t used the second putter, I’m not sure I’d have said anything. You watch each other putt on every green. You’re likely to notice.

Had it been any other club that he could have used on the course when I wasn’t nearby, then I probably would, but I’d still feel bad about it.

My thoughts too. In fact if he’d said it was an honest mistake and he had not used that 15th club I would let it go.

Many years ago me and a partner pulled the penalty for our opponents hitting the pin that was still in the cup when putting on the green. The guy had an approx 70 ft putt.. but it hit the pin and fell in.....and I felt awful after. That changed that game. It was a junior match so not exactly high end. Our opponents took it really badly though and that stuck with me. We should have simply applauded the great putt and moved on.

They’re here...

I think I might take them to bed with me tonight laugh

I desperately, desperately wanted the blades, and nearly bought them, but they just felt too punishing on Mis-hits. I’m not sure the numbers were noticeably worse than the SC when I didn’t catch it right, but I couldn’t quite convince myself. The SC look almost identical...the top line is a hair thicker, but they’re much more of a players iron look and feel than the AP1s I’m used to. The MMC 5i blends in perfectly too.

I guess its different if the game is close and prize money is involved but some rules in amateur golf I feel can be relaxed in the right situation.

Can a small black felt-tip line drawn over a dimpled 1.68" ball really help you aim? Happy to be educated but I've always wondered how much of an aid this is.
I don't think it can, unless the person who is doing it believes it can, and then goes into the putt with more confidence as a result.

All in the miiiind, maaan.
It absolutely helps, pick your aim spot, point line at that (standing a distance behind and perhaps dangling putter to verify), then line up the line on top of your putter with ball line.

If I couldn't do that I wouldn't know where the hell I was aiming, once you're stood over it perspective changes and I don't know where I'm pointing.
Completely agree here. I don't draw a line on my ball though as there is a logo on there that's straight so I just line that up on the putt and away it goes (or not, sometimes!).

I really only play in my football club's annual Golf Day nowadays. I used to play off 15 handicap twenty years ago but now use every one of my 28 handicap. The Golf Day was yesterday and I tried putting without a glove for the first time. Quite liberating, and my putting, while not sensational, was far better than usual. Rapped in a few 10-footers and a 25-footer on the final green. I've seen the pro's do it on the telly and I'm now frustrated I've not done it before.

If you address a tee shot with a driver and it falls off the tee it’s not a foul stroke though?
A frequent occurrence if you haven't quite teed your ball up properly, and the humour in the situation is not increased one iota by someone shouting "One" as you go to re-tee the ball up!!

If we ever play golf and you need to use a ruling to beat me I’d feel sorry for you.
Calling penalties at a low level (the way I play, not suggesting you’re rubbish) should be reasonably done within the spirit of the rules, and not just to be rigid with them.

I have been waiting for a comment like that. If you played for your county you observed the rules or cheated at your peril. I was playing on the 16th and out match was all square, and the president of the opposing county was following us. He heard a call asking if someone had found his ball yet, we looked over only to see the player kicking his ball forward to find a better lie. His ball was picked up, the match conceded, and an EGM was called for the Tuesday at his own - prestigious - club. He was thrown out of the club. I was brought up in an era where we observed the rules, friendly match or competitive, and your friends even called penalties on themselves if for example the ball moved at address. Dropping a ball has a routine, and woe betide someone if he did it incorrectly, and the two club lengths was strictly observed. We didn't write the rules, and by heavens they have changed over the years, but we adhere to them. We all carried the little R&A book in our bag in case we needed it. This is the one game I can play with other sportsmen (I played with Mansell for example amongst many others) but I couldn't drive an F1 car like him. It seems that times have changed.

Nobody is suggesting that intentional cheating should be allowed, but if a guy makes a mistake having left a club in his bag, doesn't use it and possibly doesn't even know he's done it, it's a dick move to call penalty on him. I would be inclined to think you noticed long before you called penalty, but waited to achieve maximum advantage from it, given your apparent mindset and the joy it appears to give you recounting the story.

I don’t think the time have changed, what you’d describe with the guy kicking the ball, that’s outright cheating, no place for it in the game. But carrying an extra club that you weren’t aware of and/or didn’t use is hardly cause to penalise someone.

Granted you’re talking about playing at county level so I’m way below your level anyway, but none of my playing mates would cheat and if they nudge a ball or hit a pin they’d call they’re own penalty, there’s no reason to call people out for minor infractions if they don’t affect the game.

+1 - but that could be because I’m more of a ‘play golf to enjoy and have a fun time with people’’ sort of guy smile
