Currently toying with a raid on the Saturday for the Open at Carnoustie.

It'll involve spending as much time driving as doing anything else, but I think I'm still game. I surely won't be going to Ireland next year for it, and last year was such a great day out.
If I hadn't organised a 3 day golfing trip for the same week (idiot) I'd have been Marshalling all weekend. It's worth it for the swag alone!
We had a brilliant day at Birkdale last year. The level of organisation was far beyond any other large event I've ever been to. Yay the Marshalls, and whoever does the planning.

Given the location, would you expect there to be notably fewer spectators this year?

I’d guess so. Birkdale is really easy to get to given the train line from north and south, and the decent(ish) roads nearby. I know nothing about the area around Carnoustie but I’d be surprised if it was as accessible and obviously a lot of the fans from the south won’t want to travel that far. Liverpool/the NW is a decent compromise location wise.

I’d wonder about St George’s too, given it’s location, but I guess lots from London would head down.

I was there for the Saturday last year and loved it. My first big golf event. We spent pretty much all day out on the course, but I’d have been equally happy to spend parts of it watching the big screens in the village. Brilliant atmosphere.

League match at Sleaford tomorrow.
Good weather forecast again smile

The location isn't great for people coming from down south, but it is far more convenient for the legions of golf fans on the East Coast of Scotland, so I wouldn't expect too much of a difference.

I grew up just down the road from Carnoustie in a town called Monifieth - played it a couple of times too, it's a bd of a course when you are 9 years old!

Best my best score at my local course this morning. 84 so 14 over. The quest to score mid 80s consistently continues. :-)

Good stuff. Where are the biggest improvements?

Won our 4 ball match at Sleaford 2&1 this afternoon. If my partner had used any of the 6 shots he was getting off me we’d have walked it.
We play three 4 balls in a match....our final pair were 4 up and ended up halving on the 18th to halve the match overall.

Thanks guys. I would say my irons and approach shots are getting more accurate and chipping around the greens is getting better. Driving is still a bit hit and hope, 2 way miss with occasional snap hook..... and putting is also very variable. Increasing my GIR % is my main aim.

May seem a daft question but do you putt with your glove on or off? I've always noticed that the players I play with putt with their glove ON but on the telly, it's OFF.

Two rounds ago, I took my glove off to putt and my putting is now as good as it's ever been, fuelling my confidence which in turn makes me putt even better. I might start trying it around the greens, say within 30-40 yards or so as I seem to get more of a feel of the shot IYSWIM.

Can't hurt to take it off (I do) but the difference is all between the ears, IMO.

Echo the above. I am as inconsistent putting with my glove on or off.

Leave mine on and have done for years - mostly a combination of laziness and being more confident with it on. I'm usually hovering around the 30 putts mark so seems to work for me.

Went out for a game last night - the bulk of what I worked on over winter - my wedges, were working beautifully - anything within 100 yards was knocked close enough to have a good go at the putt, ended up with 3 / 6 up and downs from 100 yards with a wedge in my hands, which is a massive improvement on last year.

Still struggling off the tee however and getting everything synced up on the way through. For about 30 years now I've started the downswing off with my arms rather than body, meaning my miss is to come over the top of it, meaning it can go anywhere. Things are moving in the right direction, as long as I remember the first move down is with my left foot, but sadly that doesn't always happen. Need some more work at the range I think.

Ended up with an 85 with 2 lost balls, can easily get that down 10 shots or so with a more accurate long game.

On. I have taken it off a few times to see if it made a difference. Will investigate further.

I leave it on more in winter. In summer I like to take it off between shots and let it air so it doesn’t get mega sweaty.

I’d agree it makes next to cock all difference in feel on the green.

Went to get my new irons lie checked today as I’ve been losing my 5i, and 6i to some extent to the right with a push fade. Turns out they’re perfect and it’s a swing flaw that’s creeping in on the course because I don’t see the same shot shape at the range.

Spring meeting medal at our club today on ththe west course, got the east tomorrow.

Somehow despite rain, 3 3 putts, a top, 2 stty bunker shots and going in the water I was still 1 under my handicap for a 77, a nett 68 and 4th for the day. Let's hope tomorrow goes as well!

As is the way I played like a chopper today, now cut to 8 (-0.4) after yesterday's round.

Started with a triple on the first after plugging hard against the left edge of a bunker, not ideal when your right handed!

Got my round on track after that, save for a double on the par 3 9th after a tugged tee shot and a 3 jab...

What was far worse was playing the wrong ball on the 11th, turning a 3 (par) to a double...needless to say I lost my head and doubled the next 5, parring the last 2 and finishing with a gross 90. fking typical!

Glove off helps putting, only one 3 putt today. Seem to have much better control over distance. I will be doing that from now on.

15 over around my local course today. Par'd 7 holes which is my best but 3 double bogies 2 of which were very avoidable. One of the double bogies was on a par 3, fatted the 6i tee shot.... I did take a 2nd tee shot (course was empty) and just missed the green right pin high... typical.

Absolutely buzzing for the first round of the season for me on Thursday. Haven't played in around a year (Knee injury) so hoping to get somewhere close to 30 points. Off to the range tonight & have just picked these up so will give them a trial. First impressions on trying them on in the shop, they're very light!

On holiday at he moment and the Mrs has very graciously allowed me a couple of afternoons off to play golf.

I’m currently stuck behind two of the slowest 4 balls I’ve ever encountered who have no intention of allowing me through, so let’s have a game of where was/am I...

My guess would be somewhere in southern Ireland? Those courses look fantastic.

Let me guess, those two four balls are probably of/over a certain age? For comparison, we played in a four ball yesterday (all under 30) & let 4 pairs & singles through on the front 9. Took us a bit longer for the full 18, but they were all completely out of site by the 10th hole....

Cornwall.

The 2 groups in front were French tourists. The guys immediately in front of me made out on the 11th tee that they were stuck behind a slow group themselves. Turns out they were all together. There was no one else on the course. It gave me plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, but it affects my game terribly having long waits on every hole.
