Could be the way you're addressing the ball with the longer clubs then. Which you're then conscious of so swing differently? Might be worth checking out your set up? Woods will always exaggerate a particular shot shape though. So don't be too hard on yourself! When i first learnt to draw the ball with my irons, every single shot i hit with my driver for the first few rounds would be a 40 yard pull hook!One to try if I can get myself down the range this evening...

I asked my coach about it in my last lesson, and apparently my woods swing bears very little resemblance to the swing I put on an iron. Apparently with irons my swing is compact, solid and repeatable. With a wood its long, loose and all over the shop. My set up does still need some work however, I'm very lazy and like resting the weight down in my knees, and end up slouching over the ball - need to convince myself to stand up properly. Just gets a bit frustrating - go out with a game plan of keeping the ball in play, so sticking to a 3 wood off most of the tees, then spending the day hacking out of trees.
I played in the Captains Charity Competition at Seaford Golf Club on Friday, my overall Stableford score was awful but I was pretty chuffed with my 5 iron tee shot on the par 3 seventh.
It's 145 yards from the yellow tee but the pin was well back so probably played 155 yards, it felt just right when I hit it and looked good in the air, when we got to the green it was sitting just two inches behind the hole so it must have rolled right around the rim.
My mates said I was lucky it didn't go in as a hole in one in a competition would have cost me a fortune in the bar, has anyone on here had a hole in one and if so how much was the round of drinks they had to buy?

I had one in August 2009 but it pales into insignificance compared to some people's efforts really.
It was at Victoria Park's 18 hole course in Bath on the 17th hole which is only about 80 yards or so. My mate had hit his tee shot to within eighteen inches and said "Get inside that then!". I made a good connection and it flew straight in, taking part of the side of the hole with it. Picked the ball out the hole, immediately retired it and it now sits in my display cabinet at home.
No real clubhouse there as such (and the little hut was empty bar the guy working there) so bought a drink each for my group + a flapjack each. Got change from a £20 note if I recall correctly.

That reminds me, I've also seen one go in during the football club's annual golf day at the Dorset course of Sherborne.
Guy on our team, hit a 3 wood on a 170-odd yard par three that goes across a deep valley (ie you'd struggle to find your ball in there!). Two bounces and plopped in, much to our delight.
There was 85 people playing that day, he struck a deal with the clubhouse manager and I think he got everyone a single whisky for about £100 in the end.
Guy on our team, hit a 3 wood on a 170-odd yard par three that goes across a deep valley (ie you'd struggle to find your ball in there!). Two bounces and plopped in, much to our delight.

I do this! Arms extended on the takeaway and hardly bend the right arm at any point, so all my woods shots are played almost entirely by arm. I learnt the bit about extending the takeaway but not the bit after that. Stupid really. Rosscow said:

I've only ever come close once - the ball span back to the hole & managed to spin out, i was gutted with a tap in birdie! I used to play every weekend, sometimes twice a weekend for a few years. A mate who plays maybe twice a year if he's lucky has two. No justice in this game & neither time he put his hand in his pocket for a club house round!
Pretty sure I read somewhere that getting it close off a Par 3 is skill, holing it is luck. And considering I've been playing for 30 years and haven't had one yet, I'm sticking to that 
I did put a 7 iron to 2 feet away on our 155 yard 18th yesterday though. Shame by that point my long game had been that lousy any challenge I had in the comp was long gone. I managed to hit two 2 irons (that I took for safety) OOB :/

Hit a lovely drive on a par 5, decided to play safe and lay up with a 7 iron. Hooked it OB. Dropped a ball, exactly the same shot!
Shortish dogleg par 4 with a danger of running out of fairway so went with 4 iron off the tee. Hit a terrible shot into the rough!

Just back from another lesson and am still shocked by the diffeeence between feel and real.
Instructor is trying to kill the amount of wrist set I have in the backswing.
What feels like the club and my arm is practically a straight line (ie zero wrist set) is in fact an easy 90 degrees on the video.

My biggest hindrance is spending too much time on the driving range and watching too many YouTube golf videos. When I do go out on the course, I continue to focus on all sorts of swing technicalities, when I should simply focus on hitting the ball. I also tense up on the course. On Sunday the only shots I hit really sweetly were bunker shots and 3/4 swings with very lofted clubs where I loosened right up as I wasn't trying to hit the ball hard. Very, very frustrating. I came off the course knowing I can do so much better.
I know everyone has their favourite instructors but Christina Ricci (Get More Pars) on YouTube is very good at producing short clips but with a single clear message in them. All delivered with a charming lilt!
A bizzare occurance happened sunday. I Played wih my in laws, and FIL tees off on the 12th with the driver. At the very same time a small bird of some sort flew from right to left about 50 yards out from the tee, you can see where this is going.
I would like to to tell you it was only clipped and we picked the poor little mite up and rescued it.
What really happened was it was decapitated and fell to the earth in 2 peices followed by a shower of feathers, cut clean in two by the ball. At east death was instantaneous for this litte critter.
He has now earned the nickname murdering b

Just out of curiosity, he reckons the ball ended up in the rough because of the bird strike, and proceeded to hit another off the tee penalty free. What would be the official ruling on that?
