so who is it to be, i agree Root is not the man at the moment, i would tell Cook TO pick it up again .thought he made a good captain, but said it affected his performances, so now his performances are no better, this would hopefully get Root back to the form he once had, if cookie doesn't want to do it drop him, and give it to James Anderson, hes been round the block a few times , we cant do any worse , I know this is thinking outside the box a bit .but hey we are pretty crap at the moment, ps get moeen ali back in the side ,
Interesting how opinions vary. This team can’t really move on with Broad, Jimmy and Cook in the side, yet there is no one seemingly giving them a run for their places, and a lot of new players have not performed. Even Woakes is in and out.
Jimmy A is not a captain, he is a deep introvert and hates all the dog and pony show that goes with captaincy.
I personally never liked Cook as Skip. I respect his record but he shouldn’t be in the slips anymore, or skip, or opening or playing for England. But like most, I am happy enough he gets a few more matches, but he isn’t going to recapture the glory days.
We are in a mess, and Root risks his record if he doesn’t sort it out. He seems not to grasp the problem, we’re are a bit mediocre. No real edge.

Someone will say so.mryhing to hurt Root's feelings, we'll come out fighting and win, then back to the nonchalance. Rinse and repeat.

Could would be a step backwards. Anderson isn't the man.Stokes would be controversial
I'm really not sure. But I agree with Gargamel. The team cannot move forwards while it clings to past glories.
I'd drop Cook (for good) and probably Broad (for a bit). I'd leave Jimmy in for now. Not sure who I'd put in the top order batting a present though.

Yes, but the type of personality that would make a good captain.
I think so too.Yes, but the type of personality that would make a good captain.
I don't see Root ripping into an under-performer but am pretty sure Stokes would.
Not sure he has the tactical nous though. But then Root is hardly overflowing in that department!

So Stoneman dropped for the next test and replaced with Jennings.
That's EXACTLY what was needed. That will set the test world on fire...First sign of trouble, pick a failed (at test level) IPL 'star'.
If that fails, pick a South African.
The selectors contempt for domestic red ball cricket is shameful.

Do you recall before the first test the list of promising County batsmen who were vying for selection?

Given that we only play proper cricket at county level in April and October, it's pointless as a guide to test cricket.First sign of trouble, pick a failed (at test level) IPL 'star'.

i tweeted TMS this morning to pose whether Tom Kohler-Cadmore might be a consideration...?
alot of talk about bayliss and this being his last test whatever the result....
the county game is shoehorned around one day cricket and doesn't have the gravitas it used to have. clearly England are building and focussing on the WC at home next year its a strategy that we hope brings rewards.
if it means a crap test side for a while is that an acceptable trade off?
