What to predict for Cook ...

I am going with a classy 12 then caught behind

As I type Jennings has thrown it away !

FFS - that is awful, playing no shot either.

Having Root out there when the ball is 2 overs old is a crime. Jennings needs shooting for that one.

I don't know what Jennings brings to this side - can't bat, can't catch. He's on borrowed time.

Agreed. Why they didn’t leave Pope in to find his test feet, I’ll never know. It isn’t like he’d do worse than Jennings.

Another TMS comment: More comedy batting by Buster Keaton Jennings...

Root gone.

Will we be fielding by lunch rather than tea?

Yet another top-order failure, left relying on the middle-order again.

Not far off! If the Stokes/Buttler partnership doesn't last long it'll be a long way back.

I am all in favour of giving a chap a fair go... for a new opener - I would say 15 tests at least to find your feet

10 tests in he averages 23. But in County List A he averages 46 across 110 matches. The boy can play, getting confidence at this level and ''feeling like you belong'' can take some time. especially if you are in and out of the side in between

But to last you need to make a reasonable score maybe 1 in 4. even if he wasn't scoring much, seeing off the first 10 overs and the opening bowling pair is a basic requirement.

The same can be said for Malan, Vince and Ballance - they’re very fine first-class batsmen, but like Jennings, they seem to face an insurmountable gulf between County and test cricket.

I’m not sure where that leaves us for the future. Realistically Cook’s days are numbered. He’s years past his best. Pope has received the secret handshake, and deserves 14+ innings to settle-in. That leaves us short of 2 top order batsmen - and I just can’t see where they’re coming from. The aforementioned have proven time and time again, that they are just not good enough for test cricket.

I agree you need to give these guys a fair chance to show they can adapt to the extra pressure of the international game. Jennings scored a century on debut, but in 18 innings since then (including today) has averaged 16.9. That is not nearly enough for a Test opener.

Well there is no hiding it now, we are just flucking awful. Root bowling first last test gave everyone an easy out when we lost the test. Fact is he can choose to bat first everytime but if we keep going 5 down for 70 runs we are going to lose every match.

When the openers fail it makes everything so much harder.

Are you watching what I'm watching?

The ball is hooping round corners at 80+mph. Good luck facing that.

Can't criticise Root for batting first, all the signs were it was a batting day, even that clown Bumble thought so.

Fact is Indias bowlers have been excellent.

IMO, only Cook and Buttler have given their wickets away. Jennings didn't pick it and the others were out to good balls.

India bowling attack has been rather good. I know it's easy to criticise, but who would want to face bowling of that pace with the movement they are getting.
