Cracking knock from Chef. I hope he enjoys retirement a little more with that satisfying ton.

Out of interest, has anyone scored a century on debut and in their last match against the same team, like Cook has just done against India?

No one has done it against any team let alone the same one. He also got 50 in both first innings.

Cook is the fifth to do it - Reggie Duff, Bill Ponsford, Greg Chappell and Mohammad Azharuddin being the others.
Cook is the first to hit 100 and 50 in both matches.

Yeah I heard that on TMS. It is the same team that I want to know about. I have asked TMS lol.

Lead over 300 now, and centuries for both Cook and Root. When is the declaration going to come? Will they just keep going for as long as Cook is in?

20 mins before Tea. Root and Cook to throw the bat, and if they get out, Buttler to come in next and then Stokes. Could hit a quick 100 extra runs and then bowl the Indians out by Tea tomorrow.

Yep, that ^^^, TMS were talking about the standard 4 sessions for the India 2nd innings. Forecast looks clear for the Oval tomorrow.

Also pleased for Roooooooot to get a century, he's had a variable series with the bat. Get clogging chaps.

Likewise, I've just picked up the phone to check the score.

What a way to bow out.

Just brilliant.

Do they let him go for a double?

We have enough to win it now...but a double would be good...

Yes, my error. I was getting carried away in the euphoria of the moment.

Root and Cook out in consecutive balls!

Do they declare now to deny the hat-trick ball, or is that poor form?

Poor form smile

Just before tea declaration and then onto the final job in hand.

And ... they didn't declare!

Is 401 lead not enough with 4 sessions left? Maybe India will simply play a ODI innings (nothing to loose) and biff the bowlers out the ground? Will make for an interesting final day!!

England declare
England declare on 423-8 and set India a highly improbable 464 to win the fifth Test.

When you have your boot fully on the neck, then just grind it in a little bit more.

Much as I massively admire Kohli and this India team, they play the game the right way. But Kohli has been quite chippy with Root and in his send offs to the out batsman, so I am sure there was a bit of Root want to get a bit of payback in.

Anyway before this test, Jimmy and Stewie had 559 and 431 between them = 990 wickets

They took 3 in the first innings.

The hunt is on. 7 needed for what would be an absolutely monumental achievement for a double act that has been the foundation of England for almost ever.
