This partnership has tilted the game back in India’s favour. India have a long tail though - wouldn’t take much for the pendulum to swing again back to England.

Jimmy is bowling beautifully, for little reward.

Q. Is Stokes a busted flush ?

I think Stokes and Buttler should have a long think about their batting in test matches.

Great play from Curran, Stood up well to some sledging from Kohli.

I wonder if Stokes' court case is playing with his head.

Curran was great today.

Great test match.

Nice to see Cook making another fine contribution with the bat across both innings.

Seriously, why on earth is he still in the team. A rolling succession of failures punctuated by the odd huge score is not what England need from an opening batsman.

Possibly because there are no other viable options to replace him?

Exactly. I'm starting to lose count of the number of new faces they've tried and discarded. We simply have nobody in county cricket who's good enough at test level - the present side has Root, the "past his sell by date" Cook, and a mishmash of white-ball players who sometimes give the impression they don't know what test cricket as all about.

PS Sam Curran has "test player" written all over him. Let's hope the coaches don't erase his boyish enthusiasm.

Yep - we haven't been able to find one new opener, let alone two!

Totally understand that finding a replacement has been and remains a challenge. However just sticking with the same formula can't be the solution. Many of the discarded replacements never got the same length of run that Cook keeps getting.

You could argue that if Cook is going to keep getting out for less than 20 then there really is little risk in putting in a wildcard to see how he gets on. What's the worst that can happen? He gets 13 and 0 each time. We are no worse off than we are now and the wildcard gets some experience and confidence - if he can make a half decent score every now and then.

Who that replacement should be is another matter but we are almost at the stage where it does not matter that much frankly.

Maybe I'm being too hard on the guy but if you look at Cook's performance over the last few years it does not make comfortable reading, particularly if you look at consistency rather than average - since his average is held up by a very few monster scores interspersed between otherwise consistently poor results.

I think you are doing Bairstow a huge injustice there. He is a proper batsman. Ideal number four. Why Malan get four is a mystery.

Along with why isn’t Root fielding second slip...

Rory Burns should be given a chance .

But not until Surrey win the county championship.
