Judo- what do I need to know?
Discussion
I took part in the Judo this evening.
Excellent it was too. I loved it.
Submissions teaching, followed by ground fighting starting from the knees with lower belts during the first hour.
I then stayed for the optional further hour ad was taught a few things on the ground, tied in knots and did repetitions of setting up a throw (Japanese name I can't remember. Ippon Seoinage? ) all by a really helpful veteran black belt who was almost twice my age, and I'm 41!
There's a lot to learn. I'll be back.

I found the ippon seoi nage tricky. I think because you have to throw your opponent over your head and I am quite tall so need to squat. My favourite is O Goshi. I can fling people O Goshi style all day.
Today we did spin kicking from the squatting position. I have added that to the list of techniques (another one is the stretched overhead push-up) that I don't even get close to pulling off.

Spin kicking from a squat just sounds silly

Encouragingly, I've not been feeling stiff (other than a little in small, discrete locations in the back of the upper arms, forearms and upper /outer glutes ) after 2 fairly intense hours of grappling for the first time in about 5 years.Excellent it was too. I loved it.
My various bullet-proofing strength and conditioning training has presumably paid off.

Loving it. Son started after me (he's 8) and possibly because of me he's really Keen on it and doing it twice a week!
Good stuff. My daughter likes it too.It seems that grappling is the sort of thing you either really like or you really dislike. I've always really liked it.
Which club do you go to?
More Judo and more realisation that there is a lot to learn.
Timing is everything.
Rolling (literally rolling, a lot) with higher belts was an eye opener. They appeared to be putting in no effort, just responding to my amateur efforts.
I would definitely recommend getting into good physical condition before starting this sort of thing as a more mature person. I wouldn't do it to get fit after years of inactivity.

How old are you?
It possibly helps that I'm built 'sturdy' (not fat or muscular) just on normal on a bigger scale bonewise.
Not a selling feature if I was on tinder
One thing I do need to work on is continual stretching. I always neglected this.
Im reasonably flexible and was still able to do rolling breakfalls at the first attempt -although I was a bit dizzy after doing three in a row....It possibly helps that I'm built 'sturdy' (not fat or muscular) just on normal on a bigger scale bonewise.

I'm 41. I'm strong in the legs/core and reasonable the arms, good stamina - in overall good condition- lean with enough muscle to provide some resilience. I can cope with the physicality (only minor stiffness/fatigue in some of the smaller muscles and it has been reducing) and have always liked sports that involve a degree of collision.
I was reflecting on the fact that if somebody did turn up who was a similar age and wasn't physically conditioned or prepared for contact it might come as a shock to them.
Then again, I have been doing the skills class and then staying for the heavy class, and taking part enthusiastically (including an attempt at randori) which most probably wouldn't at this stage.
Apparently a lot of people don't really like being thrown, which partly explains the popularity of BJJ. There are some BJJ people who come along too.
At the moment I am having to think about too many things at once. It's a bit like when I started doing DAS to ride a motorbike.

If so, how is it going?
