I had a great session at Judo this evening.

Being coached on a couple of arm locks and chokes, plenty of rolling in which I managed to take my time to gain better control than I have previously and even managed to utilise the arm locks on the less skilled people.

In the second, heavier, hour of the session sparring on the knees and some randori in which I moved better than I had previously and even attempted some throws -before being beaten up.

Having people resisting is very good for improving, it makes you think, everybody has a different style, and it is great exercise.

I like that the club does a good mix of ground fighting and standing.

Despite calming down, trying to think it through more now, having been to a few sessions and not being at a heavy session.... as was almost inevitable for an enthusiastic 40-something, I have done myself in.

Whilst doing practice reps of seoie nage setups towards the end of a class, I felt a sharp tweak in my lower back.... I carried on, but at the end of the class I couldn't pick up the mats and struggled to put my socks on.

Im hoping that it is muscular rather than spinal.

Aggggh.

On the plus side, I am finding that I am getting more of a feel for standing and improving my ground work.

Ps. Yes, I do a range of strength and conditioning, I have good stamina and I am generally quite robust for my age, but I suppose there are always weak links. I did mildly pull a muscle in my lower back a few months ago so have taken it easy with deadlifts and swings since.

I know a brilliant Osteopath on Deansgate. He fixes me in 1-2 sessions. Usually one.

Manchester Osteopaths, Neal's Yard. Francis is his name.

He pointed out last time that my issues is tight muscles and pointed me towards a deep tissue physio.

BTW man up. I'm 47 laugh

Cheers. I go to my usual physio first (I've been a regular for years.... up until this year, which has been almost injury free!) As soon as I can.

You'll be pleased to know that I'm manning up as much as I can -whilst walking like a 90 year old- Stiff upper lip, old chap.

Might see you at your judo. I'm missing my usual judo tomorrow again this week. I need a weekly session.

After 3 brutal physio sessions and lots of stretching, I went back to Judo, avoiding (mostly) heavier stuff.

All good and I'm starting to get the hang of relaxing more on the ground and whilst standing, getting more of a feel for the balance aspect.

Two new front teeth for Christmas. Check
Shiny new mouth guard to protect them. Check

Off to sparring tonight it is then, can't wait! Been far too long.

Been a good week this week, I'll have made it in six times. Need to prepare for the xmas excesses...

The journey towards total enlightenment as a middle aged man being pounded into the judo mat continues.

Ground work is becoming more comfortable. I'm beginning to dictate the pace a little more and it is becoming a bit less of a scramble as I recognise and anticipate more positions. I'm trying to rely less on my strength, although there is some satisfaction in explosivley bridging peoole off.

Stand up.... well, I try to remain standing up...
On the one occasion that I managed to ground a decent opponent I was taken by surprise smile

A couple of months into Judo as a 40-something , some thoughts:

1. Why didn't I do this 10/20/30 years ago?

2. I've exhausted the potential of my strength/fitness/enthusiasm to force my way through on the ground. I'm trying to avoid just going fast. Most (decent) more experienced people are much better than me, although the mid belt people seem very varied in their abilities -learning good technique is going to take a long time (see point 1).

3. My all round fitness is fairly good, which I'm pleased about, as I do put in the work. I'm one of the oldest, but in decent condition and with decent stamina.

4. Stand up is very difficult and requires feel and balance that I have not developed elsewhere.

I went 5 years ago to what is now ASW Manchester in Altrincham. I stopped due to injury.

Back to training tonight after two weeks off that felt like six...

Can't wait, but it's going to hurt. A lot.

My main goal for this year is improving my kicks, but it's a like two lines on a graph moving away from each other; age vs ability - I have to keep improving just to stay the same as I get older.

Slowly back for me too, after suffering another broken toe early December and then Christmas. I have got myself some wrestling shoes to try and prevent more broken toes (both little toes in 6 months) so hopefully this will help. Trouble is, I reckon the extra grip they give me might actually be a hindrance with the extra traction causing a potential problem with my ankles and knees.....

How old are you?

As I said above, I'm in my early 40s, enjoying Judo, but part if me wishes I'd started earlier. Then again, I had less finesse/balance and I'd probably have been even more injured.

Punching is not a go-er for me due to an old elbow injury.

Ps. I'm surprised that this thread isn't more popular.

Thought of that but think they would be a bit too 'flappy' - shoes worked well for protection but like I say, a bit sticky on the mats.

Yeah, I've got wrestling boots because I used to wrestle, I've also got foot protectors from my kickboxing days, I saw them the other day in a remote part of my wardrobe, bet they've not been on my feet for 15 odd years. biggrin

I'm only 43 but I was laughing at how I can relate to the thinking about the chain reaction/consequences of fixing something and what it'll mean for something else. How everything is about injury prevention now.

I'd really like to try judo, but my lower back just won't put up with it anymore sadly. My shoulders/AC joints won't put up with Jits - I can't support myself then move if say I'm on one hip and my hand's planted behind me. Well I can, just not in anger and certainly not with somebody else on top of me.

Me too re the thread; you'd think they'd be more than six of us who train on here biggrin
