Watching the Fury highlights again, I missed the right hand that Wilder caught Fury with in the first round. It clearly got Fury's attention, but that was it. It got me thinking, does a fighters punch resistance improve, can it improve? It was a solid right and it caught cleanly, so I would have expected more of an impact from the punch.
Also, Fury really isn't a good closer, when he had Wilder on the ropes, from what I saw (as somebody who's never laced up a pair of gloves!!) he seemed to become ragged and rush his work. For somebody who is clearly so technically strong in the middle of the ring, that strikes me as odd. AJ looks a much better finisher.
Interesting Qs and I think you'd need TF himself to answer-and even he might just be able to guess. The "knockout" punch is still relatively unknown in purely scientific terms as to what causes it. Can you get better at taking them? Is it that you instinctively see the signs it's coming and the brain prepares itself? Also, Fury really isn't a good closer, when he had Wilder on the ropes, from what I saw (as somebody who's never laced up a pair of gloves!!) he seemed to become ragged and rush his work. As to his finishing, he said himself after the fight he had to stop himself from trying to finish too early which wouldn't be sticking to the plan. I think he was resolutely following the plan, keeping the pressure on to Wilder and then bullying him at close range when he closed him down. The close range stuff wasn't pretty but it was pretty effective.

so the American public can be sold a narrative which means their believe the trilogy would have a different outcome.
I know we're talking about the people who voted for Trump and watch the Big Bang Theory in the 10s of millions but even they can't be that stupid https://twitter.com/pugboxing/status/1232056392321...
You pathetic prick.

I don't believe it. He really is blaming his costume for killing his legs before the bout even began.
He wanted to wear the outfit for black history month and "put that before anything [else] "

I rewatched the fight last night and believe that Wilder had the wrong approach - he tried to be a boxer.
He needs to do what he does best - swing for the fences and turn it into a bar fight. A dirty fight. Get your head in there, your elbows, anything.
Would it make a difference overall? I doubt it, fury is too clever, too big and too strong. But hed have a chance to land on him, maybe open up that cut, maybe a lucky shot on the temple.

“He didn’t hurt me at all, but the simple fact is my uniform was way too heavy for me.
You looked pretty hurt to me.I hope even his most partisan fans see this for what it is.
He's supposed to be one of the hardest men on the planet FFS but a fancy dress costume got the better of him.

How many Wilder fights have you watched? This isn't what he does best at all. What he does best is wait for an opportunity, relying on some rudimentary defence and a good chin, put out a soft jab to hide his right and swings it big and wide.He did that twice against Fury in the first 2 rounds, landed and it did f*ck all.

So the narrative is starting to be built.... but I think they are going to need to do better...Wilder claiming his legs were weakened by the 45-pound costume he wore to the ring....

“I didn’t expect it to be that heavy and have that effect on me,” Wilder said. “That’s the thing we didn’t test out: walking to the ring. We didn’t time it right. It’s all my fault. It’s a learning process. I really admire Black History Month, and I wanted to pay tribute to all the men and women who came before me, and I risked that over my title. They died for me, they paved the way for me.

“Bayless had come in my dressing room, looked me in my eyes and said if I hit Fury in the back of the head – rabbit punch – or hit off of the break, he would disqualify me or deduct two points from me,” Wilder said. “I guess those rules just applied to me because they didn’t apply to my opponent. (Fury) hit me in the back of the neck and the head all night and Bayless didn’t do anything about it, to the point I got lumps and bruises. That was a thing that was very frustrating to me.”

"Wilder said. “The way I was hitting the mitts and training, I was more prepared for this fight than anything. The only thing I was not prepared to do was fight on wobbly legs.”
'The Athletic' said:
“They know my demeanor, my warrior mindset and if I say I’m going in there to try to kill a man like I have, I accept that in return: he will have to kill me as well. I’ve told them many times that if anyone throws the towel in on me, there will be consequences.”
'The Athletic' said:
“I still had my senses. Fury’s blows don’t hurt. I just didn’t have the legs at all to get out of the way and to show people I was still a warrior who was still going to fight.”
'The Athletic' said:
“That’s why I’ve done things now for my kids, to set life up for them, to build for them, because we never know what can happen in the ring,” he said. “When that time comes and things look a certain way, I don’t want people to panic. I want them to let me go out on my shield. This is an individual choice. I’ve made it myself. My wishes are to go out on my shield, whether I get hurt or die. My wishes are my wishes. I’d rather die in the ring than get the towel thrown in.”
I hope he's still suffering from a concussion because this is some brain-dead st. zygalski said:
I didn't see Wilder really land the big right. A couple of semi-glancing blows early on, but not a single solid power punch.
Tyson smothered him throughout, pushing him back & didn't give Wilder the range to unleash something decent. That's what I saw.
He caught him whilst he was moving back which will have taken the sting out of it a bit Tyson smothered him throughout, pushing him back & didn't give Wilder the range to unleash something decent. That's what I saw.

Yeah Fury only seems to have got hit when backing away, whereas several of the examples show him moving forward when connecting with Wilder.
I was assuming you were replying to my post where I said he landed his right twice after setting it up with a pawing jab - he did exactly that. Obviously Fury landed more power shots that did more damage. hyphen said:
should have gone hill running wearing that costume, then he wouldn't have had skinny chicken legs.
Nah, he skipped leg day Gameface said:

Wilder gets up off the canvas every time that he is knocked down, he doesn't take any time to compose himself.
At 6:30 he is absolutely battered. He wants to cuddle Fury and fall asleep on his shoulder.
