The golf thread - 2019

Must admit, I changed my putter grip to a "fat" one 3 months ago and I have defo seen an improvement in my putting.
I also very recently tried the "claw" grip or whatever it is called and have also seen some very decent improvements in my ability to get the ball closer to the hole / or in.
So, far I am please with the changes I have made. I do need to really practice more with the putter.

I thought Id sign up to PH to reignite my passion for old cars, found a golf thread - much more interesting!
Welcome Simon, give us a bit of an insight into your game when you get a minute. left it behind for the best part of 20years, joined a club 2 years ago when we moved half a mile from it - was rude not to!
I got given 16hcp when I joined, got down to 11, but I'm now back to 13 - just not practicing enough to get to the single figures.
I have had a fitting for driver and woods this year, that has made a different off the tee for me, but I need to work on my accuracy from 120yds in, need to get to the range or to the club in the evenings and work on my wedges, it will come. Ive shot 77 this year, so its in there somewhere!
Now Ive given up football, it does give me that competitive and social activity - its good for the mind

Can anyone make any recommendations for stable putters? I know stability is in the hands of the stick-wielder but I feel like I could do with a bit of help in that department. I keep catching myself watching the putter as it goes back just to see how much wobble I'm putting on it, with predictable results.
I used to be a wobbly putter. I tried so many different styles but by far the most stable I have found are center shafted putters.
I'm currently gaming a Nike Method Mod 90 which is a bullseye style centre shafted toe hung putter and it is by far the most stable putter I've used.
Played at Overstone Park yesterday . Lovely course. It was my First round for a few months and only second of the year. And it showed. 47 on the front 9 put me under pressure to achieve my target of breaking 90. But a more solid back 9 saw me needing only a bogey on the par 5 18th to shoot 89. And yes, you guessed it I made double to shoot 90. I was, and am, still angry about it.
My ego thinks I can still play the same shots as I did in my prime off 6. My body has other ideas.

^^^All too familiar!!
I play 3 or 4 times per week and still can't get near the scores I did when I was a teenager!
I hit it about 40 yards shorter and I've now developed a slice whereas I used to hit the ball pretty straight.
Its annoying getting old!!
My distance control used to be awesome. Always had a fade but I could control it and use ball flight to control distance. I play 3 or 4 times per week and still can't get near the scores I did when I was a teenager!

Now I've no idea where the ball is going or how far. Very frustrating.

Yep!Now I've no idea where the ball is going or how far. Very frustrating.
I've come to accept that nowadays I'm a pretty mediocre golfer who can occasionally hit some nice shots.
Did anyone watch the Women's Open from Woburn today?
Some excellent and exciting golf throughout the day, but what impressed most was the attitude of the eventual winner, the Japanese player Hinako Shibuno, in her first tournament outside of Japan.
Leading going into the final day, she was so unbelievably relaxed, non-stop smiling and engaging with the crowd. It really was extremely humbling to see.

After a last minute change of plans I ended up playing today and god my putting was awful, 9 3-putts and anther 4 or so easy chances missed.
Despite the woeful putting I did manage 3 birdies in the first 3 holes and to hit the pin 3 times on approach shots (only 2 were eventually birdied!) so carded a +12/33 points.
This was the pitch/finish down the 1st - how it didn’t go in I don’t know!

Thought I'd say hi as I've started golfing this year.
I have never really properly played, always on and off as my dad always tried to get me to play, never got a hcp or anything.
But I bought my dad the new taylormade M5 driver for father's Day. But around the same time my dad's brother (his usual golfing buddy) got diagnosed with lung cancer. So I bought myself a cheap set of golf clubs and was determined to get into it so my dad still had someone to play with for when my uncle is too ill to.
Fast forward a few months and I joined newmachar golf club near Aberdeen. They have 2 courses swailend and the champ course hawkshill. I'm only a member on swailend at the moment but may upgrade to play both. My dad and also 2 friends joined. I started shooting 120 but every time I played it came down. My pb is now 96 and have a hcp of 22. Nothing to shout about but I'm delighted with it.
Really enjoying it and playing 3 times a week.

What a fantastic reason to start golf (providing your dad with a golfing buddy, not the cancer bit) Good luck to your uncle too. I have never really properly played, always on and off as my dad always tried to get me to play, never got a hcp or anything.

A handicap of 22 after a few months if playing is great progress. I have a mate that's been playing for a few years and is still yet to break 100.
I've been playing a few years on and off and still hover around 100 with the odd 95 and the odd much higher.
My genuine handicap is still 26.
I think a lot depends on natural talent, which courses you play and honesty.
One of our playing partners regularly shoots mid 80s but is a little fast and loose with the rules and only ever plays the same course. When we take him along to harder courses he falls apart score wise.
My genuine handicap is still 26.

With good fundamentals, and an idea of what you want to achieve swing wise, I think most people will get to around 18HC before natural talent has a bearing. My genuine handicap is still 26.

Well done for being honest, your friend isn't really playing golf if he's not playing by the rules.
I would recommend either lessons, or a good book.
My favourite book is Stack and Tilt. It's controversial, but everyone who I've recommended it to, has improved their ballstriking, and scoring due to the method.
Second would be The Seven Laws of the golf swing, as it is very picture heavy, making it a nice easy read.
Enjoying golf is the most important thing though I reckon

I'll take a look at those two books also.
