Managed to take my form from last week into this weekends stroke play comp, winning with a net 69!
Could have been so much better - that included three doubles and a triple. Still, it might see me down to 11.
Cut to 11.0 wobble

Anyone have any tips for a reliable driver? I know its all down to personal preference and what you prefer personally but just seeing if anyone has an idea of one they find reliable?

I currently have the R11 and to say its a bit wild is an understatement, my driving used to be the best part of my game when I was younger until i grew and started swinging a lot quicker.

Don't get me wrong - 1 out 10 drives will go down the middle and a long way, but its not very consistent, yet with my rescue i don't miss a fairway (very frustrating)

My dad reccomends Ping?

I've been very impressed with how consistent the Titleist 917 D3 I picked up earlier in the season is - not the longest driver on the market, but very straight and feels fantastic. However I don't think you can go far wrong with any of the big OEM's, it's typically a case of finding a shaft that works for you then picking your choice of head. Obviously if buying new then the whole fitting experience opens up if you don;t mind £350 - £450 for a driver. If not last year's models should be available around £200 (my 917 was £209 brand new and fully fitted).

I’d agree with this - I bought one recently, and find I’m straighter but not as long as some other drivers.

I think a lot depends on the shape of the head and how much confidence it gives you, and technically, the shaft stiffness (although that’s a secondary issue for me).

Ping are generally straight, never got on with any of the TM drivers (feel too light and the face looks closed - I realise you can adjust it). I also love the Srixon drivers, lovely shape on the head.

Forgot to mention that earlier in the season I won a complimentary four ball on the Brabazon in a charity raffle, and on Saturday we finally managed to get organised enough to have a game. Was a lovely day for it, around 20 degrees sunshine, and no real wind to speak of until the 17th.

Anyway on the 5th, which if I recall correctly is a sub 400 yard Par 4, I managed the thread a Driver through the fairway bunkers and leave myself with 91 yards to the pin. Looked perfect for my 54 degree wedge, so pulled it out, put a swing on it, and this happened:

Slam dunked it straight into the cup for a 2 smile Not something I've ever managed - even with a chip shot - so there may have been some crass fist pumping, for which I apologise. I also had to apologise to the course marshall, who was conveniently on the 6th tee. We repaired the cup as best we could, but thought it was best to let him know. He actually took it quite well, finding it quite amusing if I'm honest.

That got me back to 1 over for the round, then went on one of my hot streaks including birdies at 10 and 11, and was standing on the 12th tee level gross. The my lack of course knowledge became an issue, going OOB on 12 (wouldn't have taken a Driver if I'd realised how little room there was on the left) and going way right with my approach on 16 (would have bailed out left if I'd known there was water over there) on the way to an 8.

Shot a very entertaining 81 in the end, with an Eagle, 2 birdies, a double, triple and quad. Much more entertaining that going bogey par bogey par smile

Misses that are high and left can sometimes signal you need a stiffer shaft. Is that a common miss for you?

if you have confidence in your driver, it makes the game a totally different proposition. its worth investing.

are you a member of a course? if so, worth talking to the pro shop to see if they have any other shafts you could try in the r11 head. could be a cheap option for you.

however, technology has moved on a lot since the r11 so looking at a used 2019, 2018 or 2017 models would probably benefit.
ive never got on with taylormade stuff, it just doesn't grab me, but recent callaway drivers are excellent (I have one) and the same can be said for cobra ping and titleist from recent years.

I had a fitting for mine mid last year, first driver fitting ive ever had, and its cut out my slice entirely and my bad shot is now a pull which is much easier to deal with (or a top, but that's not the club....). But, that's down to the shaft and head set up.

if your not a member anywhere, then going to somewhere like american golf might prove beneficial (as much as I hate that place) and pay some money for a session on their shot tracker and try all the clubs they have, you don't HAVE to buy anything, but will give you a feel for what you like and don't like.

or you can buy from golfbidder, try it and send it back if you don't like??

Thats great!

Thanks for all the advice - i think the issue is the shaft and needing a stiffer one. I think i will get fitted for a paticular shaft and see what options are available, I am not a member anywhere so American Golf could be the option.

Thannks anyway! Massive help

I’m all for buying new clubs and I love getting new stuff, but if you’re missing all over the place then it’s probably inconsistency of strike that’s killing you.

Get some foot spray, spray it on the face, hit some balls at the range. Check all your strikes. If they’re consistent then fill your boots with new kit. If they’re all over the face then go get some lessons.

Or do both!

Have you had a lesson to understand why your spraying it about?

Even if you got a new shaft / club you will still be the one swinging it.

I've always found AG very accommodating, and certainly not pushy or simply trying to punt out the latest or most expensive equipment.

Turn up, give them an idea of your budget and they'll take you to one of the demo bays where they've got FlightScope (or whatever system they use).

If you take your driver along, you'll get a decent baseline of where you are now, compared to where you are with other clubs.

Swapping shafts, lofts, bias etc - all done in seconds these days.

My thoughts exactly.

Get a lesson, get fitted.

One man's straight driver is another man's slice machine.

Anyone else like to go 2nd hand route for clubs?

Did a huge buy and sell on gumtree over the last week or so, and basically ended up with a complete new set up.

Out:

TM carry bag £30
TM R15 driver and SLDR 3 wood £100
Red X scotty Cameron £120
TM RBZ driver £40
Mizuno JPX 825 pro irons £150
Cleveland 56 £35
Titleist 52 £40

Total sales £515

Coming in:

Powakaddy kart bag £30
Motocaddy S1 Digital electric trolley £100
Golf buddy platinum II GPS unit £40
Callaway Rogue sub zero driver and Callaway Epic sub zero 3 wood £160
Taylormade M1 irons 5 to PW plus matching gap and sand wedges £190

Total spent: £520

So overall cost to change was £5 plus about £20 fuel on a couple of trips to collect

No change:
Using a different Scotty putter I already had
Nicklaus JPS 3 iron
TM RBZ 19. Hybrid
60 degree Cleveland wedge

So 'most' of the bag changed to more modern equipment but hardly cost me anything. Of the £520 I spent (or £5 depending how you look at it), its basically 2017/2018 gear that would have retailed in the region of £2.3k. Only downside of course is that you don't get a proper fitting.

My strategy is to buy the gear, take it to the range to compare, if happy, sell the old stuff. If not, sell what you just bought again at little to no loss.

The M1 irons are quite a poor feel compared to the mizunos I had, but I'm gaining more forgiveness so a bit of a trade off. It feels a bit like cheating using irons like this, bad shots still end up fairly decent. You just don't get that lovely feedback you feel from the Mizunos.

The Callaway woods very nice. Very forgiving and I've the weights back on both which helps forgiveness. The R15 was very front weighted and while a decent club, the Callaways are just easier to hit. The SLDR was a good club, but no forgiveness- it really needed flushed to get it moving.

Really looking forward to tomorrow now, 18 holes will be my 1st round with the new kit. Feeling like a kid at Christmas now with a virtually complete set up change but not having to run it past the missus wink

Golf buddy GPS

Bag and trolley

3 wood is well used, but the rest of the stuff is pretty mint. Anybody else shop for their gear using ebay/gumtree?

Whats it like then?

I'm thinking of going for an M3 or M4 - some good value to be had on previous model now these are out and can't quite stomach the new model prices smile
I've only had 1 round with it so far and around 100 balls on the range but early signs are really good.

I don't think it's the best feeling driver I've used but the performance of it is really good, it's so forgiving like the worst hit shots off the toe / heel and you hardly seem to lose any distance or accuracy, also sounds really nice.

There's some Greet deals to be had on second hands ones ( which look like new) seen them at around 260 on golf bidder or golf clubs 4 cash.

I love the M series, the m2 was amazing, when I went for a new driver I went with every intention of the cobra f9 but after some testing on trackman the m6 trumped it.
