Ashes Cricket 2019

That test match had it all. One of the lowest 1st innings test scores, through to needing to chasing the highest 4th innings chase ever for England, 9 wickets down with 73 still needed, we'd already been through a rollercoaster of hope and now surely disappointment (again). Ashes virtually gone. Then 6, 6, 4... bam... surely it couldn't be done? Into single figures, a stupid Aussie review, a missed stumping, an LBW that looked plumb but given not out and no reviews left... and then Stokes driving that 4 for the WIN! Wow. That test match had it ALL.

This and the World Cup final are the best matches I have seen since at least 2005.Vaud said:

This and the World Cup final are the best matches I have seen since at least 2005.But the WC final and the final 30 mins/the inning by Stokes in this test... the intensity of the emotions they both created... will not be topped I reckon.
The Aussies dropped Stokes at 342, used up their review on an lbw for Leach at 351, Stokes only just got the six (and avoided being caught) at 351, Lyon fumbled a run-out of Leach on 357, the Aussies needed a review for lbw for Stokes on the next ball, Leach faced three balls then hit his only one to get off strike the following over against Cummins; then Stokes belted Cummins for four on the next ball for a 76 ball partnership with Leach, with Leach scoring 1...
Well done Leach and Stokes - an awesome partnership to steal the Test.

Having had some time to digest what I witnessed, it was an incredible knock and test, regardless of who you support. As a Liverpool football fan I have been fortunate to witness some incredible sporting moments when they matter so much because it is my team. (I turned off and only caught the end when Barca came back to PSG that time). The World Cup was incredible drama, but given I was not overly bothered who won the thing, I felt a bit cheated by that ending and that England won, rather than them having to do another super over or something.
Today though was one of those moments when you have seen sport at its very best. When the story is so unbelievable that any movie with the same story would be silly. I remember 2005 and although wanting England to win desperately, there was part of me that felt if the Aussies had done it, it would have been something incredible that I had been fortunate to watch. I remember when Smith batted for South Africa to try and save the test v Ausies with a broken hand. I hated Smith cos he had scored so many against us and he looked like Stan from American Dad. Yet I knew I was watching something unreal.
Stokes is an interesting character, a flawed genius perhaps. Today was incredible, and after his piss poor dismissal in the first innings it seemed unlikely. The guy seems to bask in the moment when things are going against him. As a Liverpool fan it reminds me a bit of Gerrard. Stokes today grabbed that test, and the series by the scruff of the neck and made the seemingly impossible possible. He got some luck along the way with the LBW and the run out miss, but that only added to the incredible drama.
The only sad part of today was that it was not on free to air TV. After the World cup final, a match like that could have inspired so many to take up the game.
Sport, better than any drama.

I think it's fair to say, that was a historic afternoon's cricket. Easily as dramatic as Edgbaston 2005 and Headingly 1981, maybe more so that it came down to the work of one man with help from a solid #11.
I never thought I'd watch another England performance as tense as that Edgbaston one, but this? Jesus Christ almighty.
And after getting skittled out for 67 in the first innings as well!
