I think Bairstow deserves great credit for getting the runs moving when he came out. We were a bit moribund, and he regained the momentum after Root was out.

You could almost see the switch in Stokes' head click to 'One Day mode' when Leach came out. It was the best innings I've ever seen, and will probably ever will.

What a match. What a sport. What a man.

But Root played a soft shot to be out, no matter what he scored. As did Bairstow. These guys are both superb players but putting your team under that sort of pressure with a brain fart is not on. Woakes too.

I still think I'd bring Curran in for Buttler.

Not sure whether I'd bring Jimmy back in.

(That last 6 of Stokes'...inches biggrin And how TF did Lyon drop that run out. And why on Earth did they review the Leach "LBW"?...My5 for anyone who missed it biggrin).
I can’t agree with much of that Murph, all players make mistakes but Root and Bairstow contributed and set the scene for what was to follow. If fit Jimmy will be back, it’s Old Trafford and a no brainier, Woakes will be dropped.

I hope Pope opens and we give Roy a chance at 5, Butler probably making way, but whatever, I can’t wait. I will never forget what I witnessed yesterday, sport at its finest.

Good article by Greg Baum In The Sydney Morning Herald.
Yet still the obligatory dig about where Stokes was born, while conveniently ignoring the home record on that front. Fine if you're cleaner than a vicar's joke, but best not to mention if you're not.
That's a subtle reference to Scott Ludlam, an Australian politician forced to resign because of dual nationality with New Zealand. It's a criticism of Australia, not England or Stokes.

For Manchester; I think Anderson in for Woakes. Denley opens with Burns, Roy to 3, Root to 5.

Interesting, but Ill have you a virtual fiver they move Root to 4 and Denly to 3. I don’t see Roy as a 3, further down at 5 if he keeps his place but the selection will be interesting to see.

Root to 5 ?!?! Not sure if you noticed that Stokes bats No 5 ? Don’t think Stoke’s is being moved somehow, Not a chance that happens....well there’s more chance of that than Root opening as someone posted on the previous page.

The only things certain in the England Top 5 are Burns opening and Stokes batting No 5. And 95% Root stays at No 3. The biggest problem is Roy at opener....to solve that problem they will want to minimise disruption elsewhere in the order....I think there’s maximum two changes.

Ollie Pope was on standby for this test who has batted No 4 previously for England. So if Roy is dropped you have to think Denly opens and Pope comes in at 4. The other option I think is swapping Denly (who has been a top order batsmen all his career) for Roy.

The first ginger winner too I would have thought? BBC execs won't be happy.

Well done to the POMS, (Stokes really). Australia dropped the ball (no pun intended) and couldn't handle the pressure in the end. I don't mind the result too much as long as it is a close game or the Aussies thrash you lot. That is fun.

Not sure I agree with those saying momentum is going England's way. Smith coming back in will be massive for Australia and the England bowlers who so far have looked lost against him.

Only plan that's worked is hitting him on the head.

Can't remember a series with so many batsman getting hit either

I think the momentum thing is a throwback to the Botham and Flintoff Ashes when Australia didn't win a match following the unlikely victories. I think there has been a shift but agree with you on Smith, though we should have Jimmy back and in my eyes he is still world No.1

I will be amazed if they don't move or drop Roy, it would be unfair to hang him out to dry any longer.

I like Roy however being dropped into open an ashes series effectively on debut is not ideal. I'd be reluctant to cast him adrift at this stage as he clearly has talent, I'd still like to see him have an opportunity at test level.

For me two changes in personnel for Old Trafford and a jiggle in the order.

Pope for Buttler and the Burnley Express in for Woakes.

Burns
Pope
Denly
Root
Stokes
Roy
Bairstow
Archer
Broad
Leach
Jimmy

Don't forget a certain Steve Smith was brought into the Australian test team purely as a spin bowler and was a low order batsman. Leach is averaging 25 in test cricket, that's more than Denly (24.3) and only 1 behind Burns (26).

Surely that counts as diversity then. They should be all for it - another box ticked.

I think I overcelebrated that victory a bit, because

a) Friday was awful, I still remember how smug Jim Maxwell sounded on TMS, Australia had already won, and the Ashes were as good as going back down under with two games to spare.

b) No one ever manages that feat (a fourth innings run chase), least of all England, it always ends in collapse and loss miles from the target.

c) I wanted the Series to go down to the last two games, preferably the last game.

d) Because it was fking awesome, any true cricket fan would have to agree.

True, but really I expect him to win International Sportsperson of the year.

Anyone ever won that one and the main one?

Not really a cricket fan (football fan ), but a fan of sport in general. Decided to switch over to the cricket on the radio in the garden when City went 3-1 up against Bournmouth. What a great afternoon of complete excitement/entertainment, I found myself cheering and laughing out loud at the same time in disbelief for every 6 or 4 or even for just not getting out when Leach faced a ball. Like has been said, a great advert for your sport, I will watch/listen to more !!!

For me Buttler is turning into a luxury we cannot afford UNLESS he takes the gloves. I know Bairstow is adamant that he wants to keep them but it would free him up to concentrate on his batting.

If we can get some solidity above him, then Buttler would be able to play a freer role which may well improve his batting.

Anderson in for Woakes who is rested rather than dropped (he hasn't done much wrong really).

...and as England seem pretty keen on keeping the same personnel, swap Denly and Roy around. Failing that, Pope in for Roy who opens with Burns thereby keeping Denly at 4.

Burns
Denly or Pope
Root
Roy or Denly
Stokes
Bairstow
Buttler (wk)
Archer
Broad
Leach
Anderson

My only other concern with this side is that the tail looks longer (despite Leach's heroics), without Woakes or Curren at 8.
