Meh. The RWC 2019 is all in the past now.

Normal service was resumed this morning when I watched Ospreys get unpicked by Connacht on S4C in the Pro14 match from yesterday.

My goodness me. Any criticism of the passing, tackling, scrummaging, etc of the world cup teams was nitpicking by comparison. I know it was wet, but I've not seen so much poor passing and appalling scrummaging in an age, nor so many lineouts being won against the throw.

So what was going on with Howley in the end?

Seems to have gone quiet since he got sent home.

Edited to add: It's been years since I used to post in Rugby threads and I must say it is by far a much 'nicer' place now - anybody else remember Stimmers wink

I tend to support the underdog in any game where England aren't playing. I am happy to admire any team though, be it New Zealand for their cohesive passing play, or Scotland when they're on it, or Wales or Ireland for their sheer determination and refusal to give up. One of the most enjoyable series I watched was England touring Argentina during the 2017 Lions tour, fantastic play and enthusiasm from the home side there.

I dislike this stupid hemisphere thing, our manager and several of our players are SH (as is my wife incidentally).

Congrats to RSA who were simply better in all areas and won the game with their heads. The age -old criticism of the Jones-era England came back to haunt them - when the game plan did not work they could not change it up on-field. Not helped by some basic mistakes along the way.

When Billy V is being hammered backwards in the tackle you know hitting hard through the phases is not going to work. The kicking game from Youngs was poor as usual, they should have peppered Kolbe with up and unders - him and May was a mis-match.

I think SA also played a bit more expansively than expected at times which threw England.

Tough to lose Sinckler so early on and one wonders how significant the impact was of a) losing him in general; and b) the long stoppage just as the game had got going.

As a Welshman I took no pleasure from seeing England beaten but ultimately the better team won.

Great tournament, great host-nation, bring on France 2023!

Agreed. On the day, SA played the better rugby.

The England side is young and, one might think, will only improve. Glad Jones is to remain.

I think the play interruption with Sinckler's injury would have hurt both teams equally. Given England's strength in depth, we should not have suffered from any single loss. The SA scrum would have dominated whomever was in our front 5.

I thing Japan put on a great show. I hope rugby takes off in their country after this. They will be a great addition to the top teams.

Beaumont not permitted to put the medal around his neck.
I suppose he might get a couple more chances for a winners medal but this is disrepectful to the tournament.
It seems that most followed suit.
Maybe Farrell suggested it when they had their post-match cuddle?
Agreed. I genuinely asked the question why as I found it hard to believe that they would really behave in such an arrogant and disrespectful way like a bunch of petulant brats.
I don't think it is disrespectful at all. It’s a losers medal and England wanted to win. Why parade you have lost?
Itoje had a great tournament and was probably the best England player today.

I wouldn't have blamed him if he had chucked the medal in the crowd.

Nothing to do with disrespect. He will have been gutted. Disrespect would be bad mouthing SA which I'm sure he hasn't done,
On a wider point, I've noticed that if you watch the MOTM awards after televised Prem or 6 Nations games, the players almost always either just take them in hand or take them straight off from round their neck in the actual interview. For some reason, they just don't seem to like them?

Cheslin Kolbe is pretty useful. Who said SA were just big lumps in the forwards?

It’s not a losers medal it’s the runners up medal in the worlds top rugby competition. Do they think that they are bigger than the competition? Being gutted is one thing. Carrying on in that childish arrogant manner just confirms why they are not fit to win and reflect little credit on their country. If anyone thinks that kind of behaviour is acceptable I think they are part of the problem.

Agree.

I’ll only add this. Watch the Olympics, world champs, choose your sport. More often than not the podiums look the same. Gold medalist looks pleased. Bronze medalist looks ecstatic. Silver medalist looks the least happy of the lot.

The guy in third is thinking about having dodged the worst position of all: fourth. The winner is happy to have won. But the silver medalist focuses on what they missed: the gold, and not what they have.

Perfectly normal reaction for an elite sportsperson.

. You need to forget the empire. If it was up to me you would be banned from the next World Cup for that display.
It wasn't the English Empire though was it, it was the British Empire, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. I know a lot of Welsh people like to disassociate themselves from the empire but they were as complicit in its dealings as anyone else.

For example, if you've ever being to Brecon you will have seen a plaque memorialising

The Hannibal was a slave ship and Phillips was one of the more prolific slave traders of his era.

BTW what do Wales do with their runners up medals?
