Just beginning to worry about a rerun of a Monty / Jimmy last wicket survival like 2009 Ashes. Phew.

Satisfactory result, but what a sloppy way to finish. Root bowled himself for far too long this morning chasing his fifth, when he should have thrown the new ball straight to Broad and Wood. There's no way the number 11 should be allowed to get the second highest score in the innings in that situation.

it sounded like our fast bowlers forgot where the wicket was and should have actually aimed at it

next test on Friday (I think..), we should have ended it a lot quicker

They somehow managed to completely forget how they got their wickets early on yesterday - stumps barrelling out of the ground. Bowl at them....

Old ball, but tailenders. Weird how often the bowling goes to pot at the lower order.

All jolly good fun, would have only mattered if we didn’t close out to win by an innings.

I am sure the team backed Root to get a fifth, just for the stats, and I am sure he is getting plenty of stick for going for 28 in one over....

Broad cleaned up the tail the other morning, looked like they all learned something since then.

I agree that Root bowled himself for far too long. Yes it would have been nice for him to get 5 but how may other top teams would have taken their foot off the gas like that?

Not that I really like this, but England need to be more ruthless in the destruction of their opponents when they get the chance.

Can't see Australia ever giving the England tail-enders such a comfortable ride, even if a win was inevitable.

Either way, Root as Captain should have put getting the best possible win for the team ahead of his own stats. It's not like Root is exactly swimming in runs just now and so had earned the right to be a bit selfish. One of his overs went for more than he scored in this match.

Pope looks the real deal though doesn't he? I hope Wood can keep injury free too.

Butler needs to score some runs pretty soon too. He is such a talent but he keeps getting out cheaply - partly because he goes in so late that making fast runs is often the requirement, but he is also giving his wicket away too often by playing rash shots.

is Archer likely to be fit for Friday?
if so, who will he replace?

so many factors in that decision ...

How has Wood faired in the last few days? aches, niggles etc - or is he fine?
Conditions/Wicket at the Wanderers
5 seamers or keep a spinner in (I assume we keep Bess in to do the same job again)
There's a question over why Stokes doesn't seem to bowl as much - does he have a niggle or is being managed?
If we drop Curran and bring in Archer - are we then needing to manage short bursts of Wood, Archer and Stokes?

My guess is that if Archer is fit, he would replace Curran (unless Wood has any issues). Broad likes the Wanderers and I would want him in.

England win toss and bat. Archer still unfit. Woakes in for Bess

I think he was in the tem to play, but seems to have upset his elbow again in the warm up.

At leats batting first, Wood can get another day of rest in (hopefully)

Closing in on 500,000 test runs.

For the first time since 2009.

Looking forward to Stokes coming in at 105-4 to turn the screw...

Well that hasn't gone quite to plan. Stokes getting very sweary towards someone as he walked off the field...
