Brilliant spell from Stokes to seal the victory. Also a timely reminder as to why test cricket should be 5 days.

Yep 5 days. Test cricket is all about a fight to the death. 4 days, it will just turn into yet another type of 'limited overs' style game.

Yes exactly, we will see gimme declarations and a whole bunch of draws. Additionally spinners will be even more marginalized.

Day five spinners are a thing to treasure, not legislate out of the game.

I want to see two spinners versus two lads in caps, slugging it out on day five with 45 runs to get, 3 wickets and 10 overs left...

Listened to every ball on Talksort 2 today . What a game eh ? Proper Cricket at it's very best.

Why are they even thinking 4 day tests ? All they have to do is prepare pitches that offer help to bowlers & batsman , That's what the game is all about.

The South African Cricket board must be pleased as punch having so many people in spending their hard earned for a full 5 days. I bloody love Test Match Cricket.

Ben Stokes is a remarkable Cricketer.

You've got to love a magic 'spell' in test cricket. There really isn't any form of sport that can you you the highs, lows and omfg the paints not dry yet. That was scintillating stuff from Stokes.

Wonderful. Makes me feel all good inside.

Yet today the pro 4 dayers are citing as overwhelming evidence that as the majority in the crowd were English fans then it's only England which cares about 5 day tests.

Personally I think it's more evidence that the powers that be are out of touch. They're just interested in creating more free days in order to generate more revenue opportunities.

Still standing by my view up there ^^^^

Shame but he is now 37 so not surprised. Tbh the fact he’s still turning in brilliant bowling at this age is more surprising. Iirc Wood is fit so could replace him.

Not the last word in entertainment though is it.. I get that slow attritional dull cricket early in a test can set up exciting stuff later. But today was really one for the purist. 90 overs 510 balls for 224. Denlys strike rate being a low point.

Still whatever, its a dead pitch and we need to make 400 at least. So a reasonable attempt.

I call draw.

Rabada banned from 4th Test for unnecessarily exuberant celebration. Bit petty - spoils a good contest.

Not wholly accurate though

He got a demerit point which led to him getting a ban via totting up, he'd been warned and received points about celebrating like that in previous matches

Very harsh. We want to see the best players in the world playing and not be deprived because of some old school committee doesn't like it. SA having toiled all day he was justified to be so elated to take Roots wicket!. Pope and Stokes doing a great job this morning too.

OK that is sort of true, it was deemed a level 1 offence and therefore was one demerit point. However if you have 4 within 24 months then you get a suspension.

Rabada previously served a two match suspension for shoulder barging Steve Smith, sine when he has accumulated another three points. Two of which are for exactly the same offence - Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.

15% match fee and 1 point.

Buttler got the same fine and point, he just doesn't have any others in the last 24 months.

edit, I should have siad, I also think its bullst, he didn't make any gestures or ruse remarks, he just screamed ! I have seen Stokes and Jimmy A do very similar.

Rabada copped for it anyway, just admitted it and didn't even bother the match referee !
