I can't believe I am writing this - my DW has taken up golf and is hooked and I want to get her something semi-useful for Christmas, like golf balls. Can any golfers on here recommend whether or not to get her name or initials printed onto a box of balls? Is it naff, or OK? Name, or initials, or something inspirational or funny?

For the extra cost I’d just get two boxes instead.
And then a monthly subscription laugh

Initials shows a little more thought, but if she’s new to the game they’re going to be gone within no time.

Does she have a lucky number? Rather than initials you could get them all with the number 7 on.

Go for it. Can't help with what to put on them but I'd say its a good idea, particularly for a newbie as it helps save the embarrassment of playing somebody else's ball if yours is easily identifiable. And at the risk of sounding a bit Xmas Scrooge, if by any chance you work for yourself, logo'd balls count as advertising so you can put them through the company and get the VAT back!!

Just put DW on them. Maybe she'll know what it means because I sure don't.

Haha, we have this rolling joke about presents too! Glad to report I have absolutely zero interest in golf, so won't be pinching hers. Am keen to be supportive though as it t takes away any guilt I may have about my own hobbies.

Regarding 'DW', yes, sorry dear wife, sounds like it's a borrowed term from MumsNet. What is the preferred term here?

Personalised golf balls - naff. Average life expectancy of a beginner’s golf ball is about an hour, too. I’d suggest spending the £30(?) on a lesson with a pro thumbup

How good is she?

If she has just started out with a handicap of 54 or something crazy then a course of lessons and 100 lake balls is the way forward!

My suggestion is a course of group lessons at a local golf course, usual cost about £50. Learning within a group will likely lead to her making some new friends to play golf with once the lessons are over.

Whatever golf balls you get I’d throw in a lurid colour Sharpie so she can mark them.
You do know her favourite colour? yes

Depends on whether you like the thought of 40-50 quid going up in smoke pretty quickly. It’s a nice gift and I’d be very grateful, but most golfers would lose them pretty quickly. Assuming she’s a beginner, they’ll be gone in about 3 rounds.

If money isn’t really a concern then go for
It. A box of top end balls is probably daft, but you can get Titleist’s cheaper balls customised here:

https://www.titleist.co.uk/my-titleist/golf-balls

A course of group lessons, like others have said, or maybe some decent all weather kit if she’s up for playing winter/rainy golf would be decent shouts as well.

Buy her a golf ball monogrammer and she can customise to her heart's content.

As above get the embosser made up with your face on it, so that DW can whack hell out of it when she's got the hump with you, sort of like a cathartic counselling session. Trust me DW will love them hehe
