I was due to get myself set up with a new 3 wood, hybrid and utility iron...a little budget creep means I'm now looking at swapping over the whole set...

Where is the best place in the SE (ideally S London/Kent/Surrey/Sussex) to do so? Happy to pay but want to be done properly and have a near-full range of options. Handicap index is 5 (and playing a lot better atm) so prefer to go somewhere with the full options (I worked at AG 12 years ago as a fitter but have lost touch/knowledge but understand the benefit).

Current set are some hand me down c2012 AP2's, 10 year old vokeys, a 910 3 wood/916 hybrid and a new Maverik (ideally I'd get them to check the shaft - can always just roll with that...). I know this all won't come cheap but thankfully I have some winnings in the pro shop from this summer to offset a little of the pain...

Long irons have been largely killed-off by more expensive hybrids. (cynical, moi?)

Worth trying some though, they're more forgiving than long irons. (be aware that on a range mat you'll get a deceptively good impression, as you can really smack them carelessly into the ground without too much problem - that's not the case on wet turf.)

As for your irons, my usual recommendation of Mizuno or Ping. Getting fitted for the right shafts, grips, and lie, will make more difference than anything else though.
I recently bought a TaylorMade SIM driver. I got it from the pro shop at one of our local clubs, after trying a few different drivers in the practice facility, so set up for correct loft/shaft. I was striking it well and the fade/slice had all but gone. Anyway, it was between the Sim & the Callaway Mavrik. Very close but I thought the Sim just edged it. Once out on the course ...... ffs not quite as impressive. Anyway a trip to a driving range, I took the Sim and my 6 Iron (Ping) I’ve been watching a few vids on YouTube, Russel Heritage I think. So I was just ‘tweaking’ a couple of things as they say. I was absolutely nailing the 6 iron with a touch of draw eek but the Sim..... no idea where it was heading. A lot better if I slowed my swing right down. BUT.. as the previous poster put, once on saturated grass, the 6 iron wasn’t having the same results either. The thing is, you can’t hit them ‘fat’ off the mat. Thankfully, I am slowing my swing down and my Sim ‘investment’ is starting to reward. One thing for sure, we love this ‘Tw@t of a game’ wink

Pop down to West Malling - Michael Townsend really knows his stuff & will fit you for what you need - so if your 4 & 5 iron go roughly the same distance, he’ll lose one of them for you & replace it with something else - depending on what your game needs. A 7 wood for example or maybe an extra wedge.

Well.... net, mat and flightscope mevo for xmas, so home practice starts soon.

The course I play at is putting restriction in place that there can be no visitors or guests on a weekend, and also no trolleys/carts. It's simply too busy apparently and damaging the course. I'm a member do it's fine for me, but my friends arent who I have played with every sunday.

All the courses round here are doing the same. And as we are in tier 4 we are restricted to 2 balls. But my course is currently closed due to flooding.

Following on from mentioning i would like a change of irons recently, while not really expecting to do so, I've got a free fitting this week at American Golf.
The reviews aren't great, looking at several comments from around the UK, but it's free and I'd like to think something useful will come from it.
Won't be buying on the day but if a good deal appears and I find a club I really like I will go for a new set.
(I fancy the Ping i200/i210 for looks and performance, we'll see smile )

American Golf can tend to be a bit variable - the smaller stores won't have much choice in shafts etc, but the bigger ones can be really good. I've had a couple of fittings at the one at 3 Hammers and they were fine - didn't try to fit me into something I didn't want, took plenty of time trying different shafts and set ups, and the result has been pretty good - am hitting my TS4 better than I've hit any other driver to date.

Thanks, I am actually looking forward to it. It's the new one at Hemingford near Huntingdon so hopefully pushing the boat out a bit.

I go there quite a bit and they seem to have a decent selection of kit in the fitting bay. My FiL had a driver fitting and he said they were more interested in his budget than finding the right driver. He didn't have a budget and just wanted them to advise what was best.

Wen there last week they had a curtain across one of the bays with someone hitting into that. I did wonder if they were doing it because they were hitting non range balls.

I had a fitting at American golf last year.

Told them my budget and tried out numerous clubs. I called it a day when the simulator was showing 223yrds with a 7 iron. Not in a million years was that accurate. My normal 7 iron carry is in the range of 155yrds.

Trackman must have had moon gravity setting on.

Course there is a difference between carry and total distance which the AG thing may well have been set to. And many modern irons do have strong lofts. Maybe you should scuttle back and get them bought! laugh

What is everyone's golf moment of the year?

I have a few.
Westwood winning the order of merit.
DJ winning the Masters.
And Tiger's finish at the Masters after carding a 10 on 12.

Well I had my time at American Golf today, barely 30 mins not the hour as planned.
Was able to string together enough good swings for comparison but I was disappointed with only having 3 heads to try.
It all felt a bit quick and it didn't feel like I was having much of a custom fit. The guy was ok, maybe I should have asked more questions.
The i500 looked nicest but the Mavrik Pro went the furthest and felt very sweet. Gonna make the decision tomorrow on the Mavriks but I would like to try some others somewhere else.

I'll add another highlight.

Taking my 10 year old for his first round on a proper course today. Only played 9 holes. He hit it horribly, putted really well and complained he was too cold after 6 holes. I think he was a bit taken back by the scale of the course after only playing pitch and putt. But had a massive smile when he was telling mum about it when we got home.

Oh, and the wow and open mouth when I hit my first drive made me smile. It was an awful push fade high off the toe that went nowhere biggrin

Enjoy being 'My Dad's dead good at golf" while it lasts. Give it three years and he'll be playing draws and fades to order and passing you up the middle with a hybrid! smile

The first stinging "still you, Dad" is already on its way!
