Vid of the 500th wicket! That;s a low bounce and a half no chance on seeing that coming!

Good win in the end.
Totally unnecessary risk in batting on so long day before yesterday. The WI 2nd eleven were never going to get anywhere near 350 in the 4th....
Call me a cynic, but I imagine some pressure to avoid a 3 day decimation of the Windies may have been imposed?Totally unnecessary risk in batting on so long day before yesterday. The WI 2nd eleven were never going to get anywhere near 350 in the 4th....
England clearly didn't need more than a 300 lead and could have achieved that by opening with Stokes/Buttler in the 2nd Inns double quick and could have gone through the top order Windies bats by stumps on Sunday.
The result at Soton set up a good 3 Test series by leaving Broad out but his performance in the 2nd meant he had to play in the 3rd alongside Jimmy A who had a containing role as is ever the case with these two.
Feel bad for Windies but thanks to all of them and their support staff for making the series possible.
Next up Pakistan ... a different prospect and we will see how good this England team are?

Pressure from who ?! Sorry but think that’s a ridiculous suggestion. If anything with another series starting in six days and the players having been away from their families they’d have been desperate to get this match finished. They’re allowed home for three or four days before going back in the bubble...Cheib said:

You may think it ridiculous to suggest, but kindly explain the reason for England to bat on until 6pm on Sunday, amassing a slowish total that the Windies would never attain?
Root hit one of the fastest 50’s of his career to get a 400 lead. This is all nonsense. England weren’t about to give the Windies seven sessions to chase 250 - 300.
Ok rain was forecast, but on Friday they forecast no play for Saturday either and look how that went. Nothing wrong with Roots game management this time round.
Batsmen chasing 250 - 300 might fancy a go. Batsman chasing 400 know that its hopeless. That is what Root was after.

I thought it was obvious that he was giving Rory Burns the chance to get another 100 under his belt because as soon as he was out Root called them in & with England in total control i think Root made the right call. All this nonsense about giving them 250 to chase is pure popycock , Root & the England coaches have called all the right decisions at all the right times.
Next time pequod leave it to those of us who know Lancastrian weather a bit better than you do - it’s my county ground.
It’s also NOT the way England have chosen to play for the next few years, it IS the way England have played for at least the last 15 seasons.
We have had these arguments on here for the entire length of that time. The risky approach to test Captaincy has lost the argument almost every time.

I will leave it to you to predict the Old Trafford weather then, albeit you were suggesting yesterday at 2.30pm that there were 7 sessions available from Sunday eve, but hey, what do I know! May I ask, why do you think England didn't go with Stokes/Buttler to open the 2nd innings, like they did in the second Test? What was the risk this time that decided to go with the steady accumulation of runs by Burns/Sibley which only accelerated once Root got in? What total did England really believe WI could chase down batting last on this pitch facing our bowling attack? 400 really??
Had the weather been a little worse today and Windies had a little more fight left, the result could have been far closer and a draw would have meant not winning the Wisden Trophy which meant more than drawing the series, IMHO.
Anyway, looking forward to debating the Pak series with you starting next week!
What's the forecast?
Good result, but the WI aren't the force they were and haven't been for ages. We probably ought to look at the first test...
Still think we declared too late. Still think Root isn't captain material. Still think we have fundamental issues in our top order. Etc.
Pakistan shouldn't present much more of a problem. We will see (v.sadly not at Lords).
