Not happy, looking at 5months gone, we will have £20 put on our bar account. Yippee, whilst the club sit on £500k as they pay no rent for the golf course.

Just got to live with it and support ‘our members club’ luckily I am not in a position where I need to recoup the loss.

Sport of the rich so they expect fees to be paid. Couldn’t even leave as I would of had to pay joining fee again, to go social would have cost me more and would have to wait another year to rejoin.

I just don’t like the way they go about it.
I don't think it's quite as black and white as you make out.

You may have had 5 months of no golf, but they have still had to maintain the golf course to a high standard so that it is ready for your return.

Their bills will be largely unaffected, and they've probably had losses of food and drink that has had to be thrown away. Every time they have to close and reopen it costs money. Their turnover will be down considerably.

I know it's a stty situation but in my opinion you have to support your Club if you want it to continue post pandemic.

Yeah, I have paid my fees and will support the club

All clubhouse staff are furloughed, Skelton green staff.

They’ve had grants. They pay a peppercorn rent (100 years)

They have also offered a greater refund to people who need it, which is a nice gesture.

It amazes me that the committee run the club and they are all volunteers who have their own jobs and businesses to run, my hat goes off to them as they have to deal with a lot of st .

Yep! I'm the Secretary of our club. Takes a lot of time!

Looking at some of the recent announcements, although Golf should be the first thing to reopen I'm getting increasingly less hopeful that its going to happen any time soon - when do you reckon we'll be back out there? - annoyingly my club plays its best in late autumn - spring!!!

Personally I can't see it happening until at least early March, but more than likely middle to end. Who knows!

The Puttout mat and Puttout device thing have been brilliant during this whole no golf palava but the itch isn't fully scratched.

I needed some other type of golf fix so on a whim I ordered a full set of JumboMax grips for my clubs.

Fitted them all earlier and they have turned the clubs into baseball bats! biggrin:

My first round back will be very interesting, if not absolutely comical!

What golf watches do you guys use ?

Looking at a superseded Garmin Approach S60 for £289 ,

then a friend suggested I also look at the Garmin Fernix 5 multi sport watch and download the golf app.

Any thoughts ?

A friend uses the Garmin Fenix - it often gives materially different readings to my Bushnell Neo Ghost and my rangefinder. Like 15 yards+ out.

What functionality are you looking for? On-course yardages, real-time score tracking, after-the-fact game analysis, virtual caddy, ...? There are few bad options out there but some are better than others at certain things.

Personally I use the ShotScope V3 as it's completely automatic - it tracks which shots you've hit with which club without you having to do a thing, which is exactly what I want it to do. As a downside, it's not 100% accurate with its stroke recording (it's common to have to adjust a couple of shots per round) and there are limited on-course capabilities - it doesn't tell you how many strokes you have taken until after you've uploaded the round, for example. But for me the post-round analysis and the way it works completely hands-off is brilliant.

I've just got an S60, which I've only used twice but was suitable impressed. The only problem with it is battery life if yiu want to use it as a normal watch. I don't so its not a problem.

Worth checking some selling pages on Facebook and ebay to see if any are for sale. I got mine for £200 and apart from not having cellophane on the box it could pass for being brand new.

I have a Garmin S60 - it’s superb! Tracks shots accurately and distance seems accurate. As mentioned above battery is the only downside but always enough for 2 or 3 rounds - just remember to charge!

Thanks for the feedback guys .

I presently have an old TomTom watch that gives front ,middle back, which is what i basically need really., feel lost if I forget the watch or the battery expires mid round.

Battery life is now very poor due to age , only completes a round if it's not too cold and the battery is topped up on the way there, so now I NEED a new watch smile

Would be handy to pick out distances to bunkers and doglegs, but I mostly play the same 2 course so its not too essential, but once you start looking at the options available its endless.

Looked at the Shotscope V3, but a mate has one and isn't overly impressed.

Other mates who are techies cant see why I shouldn't throw £500 at an Apple watch, but that's too much messing for me.

I can't see myself moving away from physically marking a card, so scoring isn't too important ( I still draw on an old drawing board with pens, CAD free zone .)

Just dont want to spend the best part of £300 and then realise there was a better more obvious answer .

Interesting to see 2 others with a Garmin S60

I have a Garmin X10.

Small, cheap and does everything you need.

Front, middle, back plus hazards.

Think it may have been replaced with a newer model now but I love it!

Definitely go as small as possible IMO. Oh, and
I have an Apple Watch and I ditched it for the Garmin!

Hatton 3 ahead now, he is definitely a finisher.

They showed his stats earlier.
3 wins in his first 189 starts. The subsequent 19 starts, he's won 3.

Back to the subject of golf and membership costs.

In winter less work on the actual course is performed so im struggling to understand how much work a full green keeper team can do. I could understand it in March/April when spring arrives.

As said, it is a game for the rich with disposable income so its our own fault, however the future is unknown and is my concern for a lot of clubs, clubs will need to tighten belts OR like tax payers over the coming years are those who have jobs left and are members at said poncy clubs might actually end up having to pay higher green fees?

It's a shame, I've gotten back into the game this last year and on the verge of buying a new set of irons once I can get another fitting. I've lost, as we all have, several months subs and to be honest if nothing has changed by April renewal I won't be paying.
Having said that I expect/hope enough improvement in covid to return to playing golf by then. Poor response from my club though. Bizarre year.

If lots of members leave because they've lost 12-16 weeks of golf in a year (which was completely out of their club's hands), then yes - those remaining members will have to pay more. Out of those 12-16 weeks, 4-8 weeks would have been in Jan/Feb, hardly top class golfing weather! Indeed with the wet and cold weather we've had recently lots of clubs would have been closed on and off anyway as they are every year.

I think we need a little perspective here.

My club did a lot of work on the paths around the course during last lockdown, but have furloughed all but enough green staff to keep up with general maintenance this time. There are plans for more of the same and other work to be done, but I think they are being sensible by not spending the cash reserves. They have lost a lot of income from the club house not being in use.

My FiL's club have accelerated their tee replacement program and are doing all 18 holes over this winter. Plus other minor work. So have all their green staff in.

People screaming for a reduction in fees would probably benefit from spending a year or two on a committee trying to run a golf club.
