Just been for a custom fit for a new set of sticks - the general consensus on why I top the ball so much and get very little height or distance is now very apparent. Apparently a standard loft and lie doesn't do much for you when you need an extra 1" shaft and 2 degrees upright.
Thanks very much for posting this as I am really hoping that having my own clubs rather than someone else's castoffs will be the answer to my own topping problem! Which has been awful of late.
I noticed with the demo 7 iron G425 that I borrowed that it was OK on the round but not as good as I hoped it might be. Thank goodness something made me go to the practice ground with it afterwards. I took it into the shop after hitting a dozen or so balls and asked the pro what it meant when all my strikes were at the hosel end rather than the midpoint. 'It means it's the wrong lie,' he said, changing it from blue dot (which he thought I might be) to black dot. Took the club out again and there was quite a transformation, the club became much easier to hit, the strike marks were all in the right place and the balls were all ending up in the same 10m wide space about 160yds away.
Glad to be buying from the pro rather than the internet not just because it felt right to support him and the club but also more selfishly because it means I'll be able to go straight to him for any adjustments. Plus it turned out he was happy to price-match, so it was a good result all round.

Been really enjoying my F8 One Length irons since lockdown. Played 3 times and had my 3 best rounds and reduced my handicap down to 22. Still plenty of work to do, but a quick lesson on Saturday at Calcot GC has given me tips for the driver and confidence for my 4 wood and hybrid.

Got a gapping session planned for a few weeks, which hopefully will mean I can least better manage my way round the course and choose the right clubs.

What's Calcot like? I've heard good things and been past it quite a bit. The only thing that's stopped me playing there is the insistence of having a handicap cert. which it bullst these days as it proves nothing. Some of the golfers with the worst etiquette I've ever played with have had official handicaps. They wouldn't repair pitch marks, walk all over your line etc. It would be a better idea for the pro to just have a quick chat with you about what is expected and your experience etc.

Looking to have a clear-out of old clubs - where is the best place to list it all?

You could try golfbidder, they offered me £60 for my 7 year old Cobra driver. Not sure what the age range is as they wouldn't take my old Ping ISI-Ks that are over 20 years old. Otherwise eBay?

Thanks - these are all fairly "well used" c10 year old clubs so likely not right for them, moving soon and every little helps (space and cash!) as they say - ebay's a good shout thanks

My friend is a PGA pro their so handy for my lessons. The course is lovely, and seems in great nick.

I get the feeling the club is a bit old school. Dress code for the clubhouse, official starter, bit stuffy. Not really a club for me, and i defo wouldn’t want to join.

Thanks for the info, it does look like a really nice course and not too expensive for visitors.

I took a chance on the weather yesterday afternoon and had a sneaky round at Sherfield Oaks. It was quite windy but the rain held off and I took the £10 buggy offer so it was £26 for a round and buggy. The only other group I saw was a guy having a playing lesson on the 5th and they waved me through straight away. The round took 1 h 45 m which is the fastest round I’ve ever had and I hit a pleasing 87 which included 7 penalty shots!

Sherfield is nice. Played both courses last year, and really enjoyed both. Trying to get down in a few weeks to play on a Friday.

Plus they are local to me, I’m based up the road in Three Mile Cross.

Yeah, I’m thinking of joining Sherfield soon. I did play a few weeks ago on Saturday and it took nearly 5 hours though. I’m just up the road from you near the Farriers.

Nice. Let me know how you get on with the membership. One of my old colleagues switched from Wokefield Park to Sherfield and enjoys it. Plus I think with two courses you can switch between the two to keep it interesting.

5 Hours is not good, but I suspect it will settle down again soon and be less busy on weekends.

Will do, the pro acknowledged that it was too long for a round. The flexible membership looks like the one I’d go for so will let you know how I get on.

Went for a lesson/putter fitting & my T200s & Cobra Rad arrived whilst there...expensive old day in the end!

Driver is a world of difference from the old used Callaway Alpha i've been using & the T200's are so much more forgiving & nicer to hit than my 18 year old Maxfli Revolution red dots.

It could also be down them being fit to me though rather than an off the rack set.

Local pro matched online prices too, so got to help out a local business.

Have been lucky enough to have this week off work, so have taken the opportunity to see if I can get my game back to where it was before lockdown/injury. Been pretty good in all honesty.

Monday - washout and a hangover meant that was a day of rest.

Tuesday - managed to grab 9 holes in a break in the rain to see where I was. Short game and putting we're pretty much there, long game wasn't. Was struggling to catch anything under a 5 iron properly, and off the tee was awful - either straight down the middle or had a massive push slice, so the ball started right and kept going further right. Missed a fairway by 80 yards, sent 2 balls oob, but thanks to the short game still got round in 43 (par 35), so not entirely disastrous.

Wednesday - heavy range session at 3 Hammers. Made a couple of tweaks to my set up (too much weight on my right side) and worked on turning properly, with much better results. Had the odd wild drive right, but much better overall.

Thursday - got a tee time at The Chase and had a lovely day, swinging much better, and got it round under my handicap (10 over, play off 11 there) and hit some lovely shots, much much more like it. Lost a couple of drives right, but focused on turning properly and tried hitting it a bit harder, with much better results.

Today - had a couple of hours at the practice ground working on my irons. Again, much better.

So for the first time since December I actually feel like I know what I was doing. Medal on Sunday, so expect much grumpiness on Monday hehe

Indeed - But in true Rory manner he did his best to stuff up a 2 shot lead on the last though!

He certainly did! Wasn't really in doubt though. His wedge game and putting seems to be getting back to it's best.

I had my irons fitting this morning at Silvermere to replace my partly broken set of TM Speedblades.

I'd done my homework and I knew which ones I wanted to try, the Ping 425 and Mizuno Hot Metal.

A few swings with my existing 7 iron and then with the Pings, the guy recommended trying the TM Sim2 and some Yonex irons.

Sim2s immediately felt familiar, if a bit chunky, and I seemed to hit them for miles. The Yonex didn't feel as though I was hitting them as far as the Sim2 but the GCQuad stats showed I was.

The main difference was the Yonex went near straight every time. Dispersion for all shots was down below 10 yards instead of the Sim2 which was 15-40Yards.

So now I've got some Yonex Ezone GS irons coming, 5-GW (+.75inch length, 2 degrees up) with a wedge fitting for SW and LW to follow once I've gotten used to the new clubs.

Now, if only the weather would get a bit better.

Didn't see a single mask in the crowd even though NC is right up there in the number of new infections over the last fortnight.
