I can't tell you how shocked I am that Nigel 'just retired and looking for a long-term career in media' Owens has shared an opinion which contradicts the matchday referee.
TBF I suspect that Nige has a career in media pretty much nailed on, should he really want it.Rh14n said:

TBF I suspect that Nige has a career in media pretty much nailed on, should he really want it.He's established himself in a niche of Welsh-language rugby 'pundits' on S4C. I suspect he wants something more mainstream, which is a tough gig for an ex-referee.
While he could probably milk the after-dinner speaking and corporate gigs, I reckon he'd prefer to get paid a month's worth of those for two 6N BBC pundit appearances or a weekly 'ref in a box' gig for BT.
I think Wayne Barnes will be very interested in the latter. His agent is very sharp, so I'd expect us to start seeing him pop up a lot more.

'Nige' has had a career in Welsh media for a very long time.
I was thinking national rather than provincial I think I've heard his "...and that was the moment I realised I needed to come out" story told about 10 different ways, depending on the audience.
Nige on Countryfile: "And I was walking in the fields, enjoying the countryside, when I saw two bulls trying to mate... and that was the moment I realised I needed to come out".
(that was a joke, of course)

No chance. He's not Gary Linekar fronting a show for a couple of million; the pundits will get a few hundred a show at most. A good after-dinner speaker can earn thousands for each gig.Mr Pointy said:

Yes. How much do you think they get? If you think they are in the "don't get out of bed for less than £10k" brigade then perhaps you don't understand broadcast costs. Let's face it, there's no shortage of has-been sportmen & women who are looking for a career after they have finished playing.
Theres no shortage of sportspeople who'd *want* to do this punditry lark - the actual amount who are suitable is, I suspect, considerably fewerMr Pointy said:

I'll be honest, my only gripe is I've never rated him as a ref, I always thought he'd even things up to create a 'spectacle' instead of refereeing properly. I prefer Barnes.
Hand your Welsh passport in and swim across the Severn!Read Toby Flood in today’s Metro. Think he’s got it about right that the England team are “overplaying” and giving away penalties.
I think it’s coming from continuing with a gameplan that basically everyone else has worked out and isnt getting the desired rewards. Then the mentality is that all they need to do is try harder , hit harder, run more, compete more at the breakdown, then everything will come right and the tactics will work, but it just ends up being frantic error strewn play. Added to poor execution of the gameplan and lack of form of several players then I’m surprised we were even still in the races with 20 mins left last Saturday.
This is still essentially the same team that beat NZ and reached a WC final.
There was 10 - 15 mins where England showed what they can do in the Wales match to get back on level terms but 15 min out of 80 doesn’t win matches.
I don’t know if it’s Eddie being tyrannical or a lack of imagination in the players but England stick so rigidly to the pre-described plan it’s very easily countered by the opposition
A little variation in play would work wonders I feel - yes use the box kick at times but also think about the little dink over the top, putting through the hands more often, a horrible bobbling grubber..... it would keep the opposition off balance and create more opportunities rather than just trying to pound them into submission with the continual witless up-and-under and box kicks
Still France at home and Ireland away yet
Although we’ll probably have a stormer at some point then everything will be forgiven/forgotten
Oh Farrell shouldn’t be Capt. hasn’t the temperament or tact for it , but who should take the armband ??? Itoje ??
Daly should be dropped- he’s not a fullback and hasn’t played well enough for some time
Watson should drop back and bring up another winger

Yes. Particularly interesting analysis of Farrell and the huddle for the cross field try.https://youtu.be/K6rIMLowoJI
And plenty of time to set...

Well, this thread got really unpleasant.
were there posts removed then, I don’t see anything particularly unpleasant?Just seems it’s like the usual chat, especially after England lose to Wales.
