He's been excellent for Edinburgh again this season. It will be interesting to see how he goes next season for Worcester.
Agreed but everyone has an off day, hopefully it’s tonight smile

Slade and Nowell for Daly and Van der Merwe would be the main changes for me.
The same Nowell who's played no rugby this season?

That could be suicide.
Yep. He will hopefully have played 7 or 8 games back to back by the time the Lions go on tour, so will be at peak fitness......
Exactly. But you can't pick a squad who will "hopefully" be fit. With such a small squad, there's no space to carry injured players.

It cost the Lions £100,000 to include Courtney Lawes.

I can't see the whole article, but haven't The Lions have had to pay Premiership Rugby for the 'early' release of the Premiership players anyway, because they've decided to play Japan on a date before the previously agreed window. Not just for Courtney.

When I had to go back to the CEO and the board about getting an extra player, that costs the Lions well over £100,000 by the time we've paid the club and the player and all the costs associated with that.
I'm sure there's some costs, but presumably player X of 37 and their club would have had to be paid anyway?

I like the pick. For me, personally, I wouldn't have picker Biggar. I like him, great player, but not had the best of games this season. I do like the inclusion of Rees-zammit, however, I suspect he will be targeted for his inexperience.
He's probably the form 10 of what was available, although Sheedy had more of an impact in the 6N.
There's no "probably" about it.

He was the best 10 in the 6 Nations, and has been absolutely outstanding for Northampton in the Premiership.
Of course there is. If you were picking the premiership XV tomorrow starting 10 would be Marcus Smith. No issue with Bigger starting out of the chosen squad.

Interesting video up on YT from Squidge. He makes the excellent point that this is not a ‘Best Of’ selection, it’s a squad designed to deliver a game plan to beat the boks.

Seen in that light, I think the selections make more sense. Simmons and Hill are forwards who like to pop up out wide, bringing surprising speed and real power up against outside backs; Curry can do that too. That means you need your centres to put in a shift doing some bosh and breakdown work - and all of the selections are good at that. Even Daly, who is clearly picked as a centre and wing cover, not as FB. Food for thought.

Well if he got injured then he would have been replaced in the squad, simple. A fully fit Nowell though surely has to be on the plane?

Post march speech was something. Obviously meant a lot to him being in Lion's contention and used it to produce a MOM performance.

I think so. Penalty try scored when Bath scrum disintegrated. Don't see that very often. He may get the call at some stage, 3 props needed for each side at all games ( 2 to play and a reserve) doesn't leave much leeway for injuries.

Don’t forget chaps, there are always subs called up to the squad.
Two more things:
1. You don’t need an article to tell you a squad has been picked to beat an opposition, esp when it’s the Boks at home.
2. Nobody is picking Marcus bloody Smith to play 10
against the Boks ffs!!!! They would run straight over him!!

You don’t send a back eight to the Veldt to be an attacking paradise. They are there to tackle, get up and tackle again. The Lions fly half has one job in SA...to punch the ball back behind the Boks and make them turn. Again and again and again.
The Boks will send Allende and his mates hard, fast and straight at them, every minute of every Test from 1min to 80. It will be brutal.
Biggar will be needed to go toe to toe with the runners down his channel. The two centres will have to be tackle monsters. Every Bok play that isn’t direct down the 10-13 midfield will be raining bombs on the FB.

It’s not the All Blacks. The game isn’t to fight an all court running 1-15 skills blitz. The Boks play something very different. The intensity gets turned up to 11. It’s pace and power and straight down the throat. With Kolbe on the wing to add the X factor spice.

God I can’t wait!

I must be getting old, but I find this crash, bang, wallop style of rugby from SA and to some extent Sale, a bit boring.
I'd rather watch teams like Japan for example.
Am I the only one?

The Boks have always played like this, its nothing new. They invented this rugby. The Lions didn't invent 99 for nothing, John Bentley didn't go south in 97 with the intention of flattening everything in front of him for no reason and Scott Gibbs didn't line up Os for sts n giggles. Actually, strike that last one, he probably did do it just for sts n giggles!

The stunning beauty of the Lions touring each of the Southern Hemisphere boys, is that they all play their own brand of rugby. They all play a distinctive, different style. The Lions have to adapt every time they reform, they have to reforge a playing style and identity to reflect who they are playing.

I fully admit to being completely and utterly biased. The Lions is the greatest thing in sport to me.

Great performance and lovely speech, but it doesn't change the fact that he's been well off the pace this season.

Agreed, peaked too late, but with only 3 props each side going, and 8 tour games, he best keep playing that way and keep his case packed.

Absolutely. Him and Tomas Francis are top of the list for the 3 shirt.

BBC Rugby Union podcast raised a good point today based on Chris Ashton's disappointment many years ago, and that is that players that might be called up as injury replacements really need to be involved in their nations Summer matches, even if that means missing out on the chance for a holiday and rest after a hectic compressed season.
