I certainly had Curry down for the test 7 shirt, but Hamish Watson definitely put his hand up yesterday.

Good to see no injuries so far. The aim of the Saffas in pretest matches is to injure as many Lions as possible normally.

My money is on Gatland preferring versatility and foot speed over pure specialists. I wouldn’t rule out both of them being in a test side back row.

I’ve long harboured the thought that Gats isn’t working on a mid week/Test basis, but he’s working on a 30man Test basis. Eddie’s starter and finishers concept, but applied to all 15 players. Of course you can only have a limited bench, but everybody has to buy in that you could be a starter or finisher for the Tests, because that is how they are going to have to play to stay with and beat the Boks. Go toe to toe with them for 85mins.

Hamish and Curry over the game distance. Curry is a one man defensive effort. Joe Worseley on steroids with the wick turned up. Hamish is a human dynamo who never stops, never stays still, never goes quiet. Between them you can have 85mins of the biggest engine on the pitch. The Boks actually have nobody who can live with their energy, so work to make use of it. Equally though Gats needs some of the big guns in the back row, so you actively don’t want to play them both together. You need a Lawes/Itoji/TB always on, you need JC/TF/SS always on.

I never understand why the Lions concept gets questioned every 4yrs. Every time the games produce the most intense, high end rugby, sport, theatre. The last 15-20mins of Lions Tests are always the best sport of the yr. They redefine pinnacle each time.

I assume that was tongue-in-cheek?

Yesterday's match was played very fairly.

Hmm. Always a risk that this tour turns into a covid clusterfk but I really hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.

I suspect the tour may disintegrate over the coming weeks. Watching 60k fans at Wembley tonight and full stadiums post the 19th July only rubs salt in the wound.

My preference from the start was moving it to 2022, but too much money involved for that to happen unfortunately frown

It was the only sensible suggestion, and the only objection was people who were expecting to make money this year.

This will be looked back on in history as the year when the Lions ate itself.

Tonight's game pushed back to a 7pm kick-off, to allow time for another round of PCR testing.

Just so it will clash perfectly with the football, and ensure they get zero casual viewers, presumably?

This tour is looking more stupid by the hour.

Be surprised if all 3 tests, if any go ahead at this rate!

Positive test for one of the Lions' management team and three players isolating as close contacts...

Lions now going to play tonight with only one back on the bench?

That seems like a ballsy move

Kind of. Look at the back line and you can take any one of them out, shuffle the remaining players and bring Russell in at 10.

Problems are if they lose 9 (can Russell cover 9?) and once they lose two backs. It looks like Gatland is prepared to put a loose forward in the backs if need be Warburton said in the warm up that should be ok short term. The issue would be defending moves from set pieces where they might let a gap open.

Sounds fine on paper, right?

Lions backs, esp back three, look absolutely lethal.

Puts a lot of pressure on the Saturday team - need to really do a number or look bad in comparison
