I'm a bit out of touch, is there a reason Stokes wasn't in the team ?
All the players who were involved in the IPL are quarantining I believe.I've got tickets for Edgbaston on Saturday, my first ever England match, looking forward to it.
Just read the Ollie Robinson stuff.
From what the BBC said I expected the tweets to be horrendous but from what I saw most of the stuff he said was the kind of thing Family Guy were saying 10 years ago and pretty much everyone was laughing at.
Gutting for him that stuff he said 9 years ago as an 18 year old has ruined the best day of his professional life.

True, but Stokes missed much of IPL to have surgery on a fractured finger, from which he is still recovering. I think he's due to play for his county next week.
Wasn't aware of that, hasn't stopped him playing CoD Warzone everyday on his social media!spikeyhead said:
I'm sure you're aware that Saturday's at Edgbaston is dressing up day
Didn't know that, thanks... Just catching up on the cricket
Fortunately he's now 30 so we can't have more than what, 5-8yrs of this?
As a third constant, the biggest issue we have of all continues to be the selectors and their policies.
It was 8 frickin years ago when he was a kid. Surely getting him to Tweet an apology, go on the record denouncing it as stupid etc would have been a far better way to handle it than this drawn out bullst.
I guess if we're on for castigating people though, what about all the team mgmt that he's played for since for not doing their homework sooner and calling him out on it nearer the time?
Ridiculous.

Always like to read Atherton's take on things. He thinks England got it wrong yesterday.

They’re hardly likely to give Tommy Robinson the boner of the century. From what the BBC said I expected the tweets to be horrendous but from what I saw most of the stuff he said was the kind of thing Family Guy were saying 10 years ago and pretty much everyone was laughing at.

ECB just need to be seen to be making a stand against it. He has come out an apologised, ECB will say they are conducting an enquiry and he will miss one test match. He will have to make a couple more statements etc.

I agree that they are 8 years ago, and he no doubt has changed his views. The issue is that England came out on the 1st day being against hate, and racism and it makes them look a bit foolish. While they aren't the worst tweets in the world its not a great look.

Agreed. He'll miss one test match, say he's undergoing a diversity course or re-educating himself etc., then come back into the fold.ECB just need to be seen to be making a stand against it. If they ignored it, people would say it's ok to do aslong as you're an international player, they've got to be seen as doing something.
A government minister is getting involved in this now - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/57383097
It's a shame this is all we're talking about, as he had a really solid debut with both bat and ball.

You'd think the ECB would have a handle on this type of thing now. If they ignored it, people would say it's ok to do aslong as you're an international player, they've got to be seen as doing something.
Do a full check before selection and deal with it then.
It's not rocket science.

And in terms of how to deal with it, does something 8yrs ago from a kid making kid-like "funnies" really warrant a suspension? Wouldn't it have been way more proportionate and sending out of the right messages (ie not to over-react at everything in life) to simply say something like...
"Some silly and insulting Tweets made by one of our players a while ago have been brought to our attention. We've discussed them with the player and he's apologised unreservedly, noting they were a mistake and not reflective of how a mature player should act. The player is hugely embarrassed and has never done anything similar since. The ECB and CCB also apologise for not having seen these earlier. Since 2013 we have much better structures in place to deal with this sort of issue. The player will be giving up more of his time to help the ECB continue it's tough stance against racism".
If they put that statement out then there would be an issue as it's evident that in 2021 they have no protocol in place to handle this other than
"Oh st he's been found out, let's ban him"
The investigation should take a day at best, castigate him and just make it clear anyone doing it now has no future with the ECB.
It's ridiculous it comes to light like this.

The ECB have to be seen to be covering their back, as they cocked up and no-one checked his social media. He is an England player, and reporters / public are always going to do some digging for skeletons. "Oh st he's been found out, let's ban him"

If the ECB hadn't been really promoting equality and no to racism I reckon it could have been brushed under the carpet. As they have made these issues front and centre, they cannot be seen to not be doing anything. Whether it was last week or 8 years ago the optics arent good.
A one game ban, and talk of an investgations allows everyone to move forward in the right way. From a PR perspective I dont think they have an option.

It’s odd how it only came to light during his first test. It’s been out there for 9 years ffs. "Oh st he's been found out, let's ban him"

As noted by the poster above, him getting his first test will ha e prompted some research on him. It's bolllcks though. Dowden is right. Sanctimonious virtue signalling approach by the ECB.

The England selectors are no more, the team is now picked by the head coach, in this case, Chris Silverwood.Cheib said:
