From what I saw she looked good in patches.
Shame she met Gauff so early on.
Onwards and upwards!

Was always going to be a tough one against Coco Gauff, although it was a loss for Emma, it wasn't a complete write-off to the 2023 season...
Hope she'll get some good results on the tour in preparation for Paris and Wimbledon smile

Some good moments for ER, but the result not really a surprise… Gauff was always going to be a tough opponent.
This is her problem now though … her ranking now means she will be meeting a top 10 ranked player early in every tournament. As far as I can find, she has never beaten a top 10 ranked player.
Belinda Bencic, who Emma beat on her way to the US Open win had a World ranking of 4. Maria Sakkari was ranked 3 in the World. Fernandez, who Emma beat in the final was ranked 13 in the World at that time.

It’s hardly any real measure but Leyla Fernandez (WTA 40) whom ER beat in the USOpen also lost in the second round against the WTA number 4.

ER has to pick her competitions wisely now and maybe avoid one or two 1000 events where she will inevitably meet a top 30 player and instead maybe pick a 250 or 500 event where she can string a run of wins together to improve her match craft, fitness and confidence. Yes they are worth less ranking points but build those three characteristics up and then get back amongst the top players and the big wins will come again.

With all her coach changes maybe there's a spot for you?

biglaughbiglaughbiglaugh I'm happy on my sofa thank you.

I do think actual Tennis decisions have to be made now - all the 'investment' and sponsorship deals are done so tennis decisions need to be made to make sure the career doesn't flounder.

I'm sure she has the talent for a top 30, maybe a top 20 place but the last thing anyone wants to see is constant big competition R1 defeats and the obviously demoralising effects they will eventually bring. String 3 wins together should be her target for the first part of the year. Remember she still is Womens British Number 1 and the US Open points have long since evaporated.

At the time Bencic was ranked 12, Sakkari 18.
I’m not decrying her talent or effort, but aside from reaching R16 at Wimbledon and that golden fortnight in New York, she has done nothing to merit the attention. She needs to play a bunch of tournaments to get her ranking to the point where top 10 players are avoided as long as possible, because she has no pedigree against them.

Emma's playing now at the Indian Wells Masters. Round of 128 match against Danka Kovinic. Emma won the 1st set 6-2 and it's currently 5-3 up in the 2nd.
It was reported earlier that Emma has been recovering from tonsillitus and a recurring wrist injury from last year..

I appreciate she is not very popular here even though I don't understand why but I really hope she does well.
I don't think she is playing well enough to worry Linette but you never know.

Plays Magda Linette in the next round. Tough one, as Magda is in form after winning her semi-final mach at the last Australian Open.

Good win, getting over the nasty bug it seems.

Opponent a bit off-key.

Wrist giving issues again though. She played the conditions and her opponents weapons better after being 4-1 30-0 down in the first set.

It would be good to see her not be intertwined with injuries for a while so we can get a better perspective.

It also would be good to not have to think "It's just an excuse to excuse poor performances"

Anything but football at the moment in the news smile

I don’t know any top level tennis players, so maybe they are all suffering from niggles all the time and have to manage them.

If not, she’s got to beef up her body because it’s just not up to the strain of the job, it seems.
