Treated myself to a new set of clubs, bag, woods and shoes after using the same gear for 20+ years. Went for some 2014 Nike Vapor Fly Pro. Excited to give them a go.

Glorous day up here, blue skies, not much wind to speak of, playing well (for me) 2nd in club medal at the weekend - Off to Trump on a coprorate - Expecting absolute carnage wink

Knock out round today, barely had a putt that dropped (no birdies) but shot a gross 73 this morning, 4 over par on whats a very difficult course!

I'll take that every day of the week. So chuffed I've now signed up to the competition (team scramble) tomorrow, bad golf coming in T- 12 hours.

Starting to see some real gains with adding some speed now, touching 180 ball speed flat out, which has brought my overall ball speed up across the bag.

Played Cavendish the other day, second visit there and such a good layout, only short but some real quirky holes, for those who don't know was designed by Alister Mackenzie

38 points playing off 10
If that’s reading your true ball speed, that’s a piss missle in the making. 179mph ball speed is bloody as quick as it needs to be at our level.
Your not far off optimised distance too.

179 mph is damned impressive - on a hot day swinging out of my shoes I can just about nudge 163!

Managed to break 100 the other day after playing for 6 months. The main difference to my game has been knowing how far each club goes, planning my way down each hole (using a Bushnell GPS - great bit of kit) and vastly improving my short game (sub-100 yds). Golf sidekick on YT way of the playa if anybody’s interested.

I had a week of coaching recently and before that I’d only use my SW out of a bunker. Now I’m using it for anything 75 yds and in. Ping Eye-2 from donkeys years ago - I love it and my confidence is sky high.

Picked up a 52 deg TM wedge yesterday to fill the gap between my PW and SW; looking forward to trying it out this coming week.

As an aside, out of interest I had an iron fitting yesterday. I wanted to see how the newer clubs compared to my current i20s. Was consistently shooting 15-20 yards more on the GC quad with the newer Pings so if I can consistently break into the 90s, I think I’ll be going for them.

Love this sport - it’s becoming an obsession.

Do you know the lofts of the newer irons compared to your old ones. Often new clubs just jack up the lofts so it looks your getting extra distance, but the 7 iron is actually a 6 iron.

Obviously that might not be an issue but if they are super strong you might have issues with you gapping

Must be about the only double digit handicapper in the country with a ball speed knocking on 180mph.

Massive scoring potential there.

I’m in the market for some new golf shoes. Does anybody have any recommendations? Spiked/spikeless?

Current pair are an old pair of spikeless Rifes from AG. The heels are wearing out and there is next to no padding, so my feet are normally quite sore after a round.

Modern, spikeless, trainer-style shoes are a million miles from the old metal-spiked ones and it's hard to go wrong to be fair. I'm sure some will say stick with expensive Footjoys and similar but to be honest I just go on Amazon and see what I like the look of. But definitely go spikeless in this day and age.

I've just got a new pair of Under Armor shoes - so much better than my old Addidas ones

I need wide fit so am quite limited - https://www.clubhousegolf.co.uk/acatalog/Under-Arm...

Cant complain for <£70 either (I got mine via quidco and the site on there which got me even more off)

Spikeless for when the courses are drier, like now (current ones are Nike). Spiked shoes for the wetter months (Footjoy).

For the spiked shoes I go as cheap as possible in my favoured brand, Footjoy, as in the winter expensive shoes are a waste with the conditions they are worn in.

If the last pair worked for you, then I would go with them again. I could not tell if shoes would work for me over a 4+ hour round just by trying them on but I have never had a bad experience with the comfort from Footjoy so keep with them.

More comfortable, lighter, easier to clean, look better, you can drive to the course in them and don't need to change shoes in the car park. Probably a few other reasons if I sit down to think about it.

Super comfortable, look like normal trainers, don't need to switch shoes in car-park, really easy to clean, often cheaper, grip is just as good for the majority of the time.

Agree with the last 3 posts for all the reasons listed.

In the winter, I wear Footjoys with spikes.
About now-ish, providing it isn't damp, I start wearing spikeless golf shoes (Inesis).

I have these. https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/men-s-grip-waterproo...

Waterproof, worn during the winter and no issues with grip.

I'll be sticking with spikes. If those reasons matter to you it's a no brainer but aside from those aspects, I can't stand the way the trainer style ones look.

Spikes for me always. My feet slip otherwise.

I have just bought some black Nike victory. Really happy with them.

When we left the UK in 2019 I gave away my clubs. I didn’t have a proper set - just a mishmash of clubs I had acquired along the way plus a cheap bag.

I’m thinking about starting to play again and perhaps buying a secondhand half set (got to be a lot cheaper than new). I am pretty hopeless so don’t need anything fancy yet on the other hand don’t want to buy rubbish either. Any recommendations for middle of the road clubs that would be good for a beginner? Any tips for buying online?
