Played the Old Course at Sunningdale yesterday.
What can I say? Absolutely magnificent. Such a playable course, every hole a pure joy to play and each and every one could be a painting. Visually stunning. Superb condition.
Managed a very average 87 off of the whites, managed to 2 putt par stroke index 1 which was nice.
Going back next month to hopefully play the New Course (although I'd quite like to play the Old again now I know where I'm going!).
"New" Course plays a lot longer, too many 4&5 irons in to greens etc. For me it isn't nearly as good as the Old Course. I'd play the Old again if I were you. What can I say? Absolutely magnificent. Played in my first monthly medal of the season yesterday after missing loads through a house move and travel. Got off to an incredibly ropey start using most of my handicap up by the 4th, but settled down and ended up playing really well. Still a bit wild off the tee, but my irons were much more like it and the short game was working well.
However as you can see it was a bit of a wild ride:
5 on the 13th was with my second ball, so another unofficial birdie, and had 3 putts for 2s that just shaved the hole.
Woke up this morning to see id come 3rd overall (so am in the medal winners comp at the end of the year), and had my handicap knocked down to 8.6.
Not where I thought I'd be when standing on the 5th tee I will admit

Do you know a member? I've always been put off by price to play tbh.
Hi Dan,No, it was an invitational so fortunately didn't have to pay!
Next month we have a friendly match which will see 4 of us go there and then we reciprocate and play them at ours a few weeks later.
I think it's around £300 a round or £500 for the day at Sunningdale? I'd be tempted to treat myself to a day with lunch for a special occasion - it's magnificent. Think you have to book quite far ahead though.
My friend is a member a Mill Ride and I think they have played Sunningdale, The Berkshire and Swinley Forest over the years and he said they have all been fantastic tracks.
I sometimes walk my dogs next to Bearwood Lakes and it looks empty on a weekend which seems strange.
I can’t decide if I’m playing well or badly at the moment.
I’ve finally fixed my driver after by strengthening my LH grip and it’s night and day from where it has been. Turns out, that extra 30 yds or so makes a huge difference to being able to score.
Irons have been solid and my touch around the green feels like it’s at it’s summer best. (Although I putted like a chump today).
But whenever I try and put a scorecard together I seem to fall apart. Started 8,8,7 this morning! Before playing bogey golf for the next 6, and shot 43 for 9 holes yesterday with an 8 in there.
It’s so close, yet so far away…..
Lucky enough to have a round at JCB on Thursday so I’m hoping I can at least play a few holes to the best of my ability….

Got a board medal in the diary for tomorrow morning.
Hoping that I can string a round like last week (+3 with a double, vs. 7 handicap) together, however the club have now made the (extensive) GUR areas normal play again - this will be a lot more difficult as I likely saved a good 5 shots from free drops last week and normally get at least 1 per round!
We'll the medal didn't go great, primarily due to the hangover that didn't really clear until the last few holes.Hoping that I can string a round like last week (+3 with a double, vs. 7 handicap) together, however the club have now made the (extensive) GUR areas normal play again - this will be a lot more difficult as I likely saved a good 5 shots from free drops last week and normally get at least 1 per round!
Managed an 83, so double the handicap - 3x missed small putts, some other stupid play and a lost ball (cracking drive and then a thin/shank from the old divot I found myself in).
Off to Southampton with the society for a couple of games at Meon Valley this weekend which should be good fun

Yep Bearwood often is quiet at the weekends, there’s a roll-up until 10.30 and a few booked tee times after, but anything from late morning onwards you can just pitch up and go straight out. It’s busier in the week than weekendsMy friend is a member a Mill Ride and I think they have played Sunningdale, The Berkshire and Swinley Forest over the years and he said they have all been fantastic tracks.

Agreed, I was fortunate enough to have one of my captains away days at Swinley earlier this year. 40 of us went and it was an absolute treat!!
Posh school dinners Someone in our society knew someone at Swinley and we got to poly it a couple of times a year… then some years later I was an artisan at New Zealand Golf Club for a couple of years… got to play Swinley again (and most of the other old Surrey courses) in the artisan comps.
Still think Swinley had the best par 3’s and the best lunches of any golf course I’ve played.
