Wow, looks fantastic, and definitely a bucket list course for me.

How much did it cost to get on if you don't mind me asking?

It really was an amazing day, the whole experience from start to finish is very special, I'm not sure you can ever justify the below amounts... But I came away very happy.

The round - 450 euros
Caddy - 50 euros
Buggy - 60 euros

So today was the day...

What an experience, the whole week has been good, but today we were truly spoilt.

Greens were running at 12 (sickface) managed to shoot 85 and 33 points so really happy given the course...

What's your handicap? That's a notoriously difficult course, I think you're being very modest given the score you managed against the course on your first time there. That's an amazing result beer

Wow, that's a lot of cash for 18 holes!

Having just played the Old at Sunningdale I think I could just about pay their £500 for the day and pay both courses with lunch in between, but it'd have to be a special occasion!

Valderrama looks stunning though, glad you had a memorable time!

Playing off 10 officially, but I've been much better in recent weeks.

Couple of things to factor in, we played off the yellows so it's not quite tournament conditions and we had a great caddy, who I'm sure saved me numerous shots. He's actually a current DP world tour caddy and been helping out at Valderrama for the last 6 years, so I basically listened to him.

Also played the old course at San Roque which was probably a harder test on the day, and I shot 83 there.

Few pics of that place...

It's consistently in the top 20 in the world - it's a stunning course. The New isn't far behind, either. Must be one of the greatest 36 hole destinations.

Hmm, top 100 defo and top 50 at a push, certainly not consistently in the top 20, if ever.

edit. not disparaging its greatness however!

Well:

15th https://www.golfdigest.com/story/worlds-100-greate...
24th https://www.top100golfcourses.com/top-100-golf-cou...
30th https://golf.com/travel/courses/top-100-courses-wo...

So yeah, top 20/30 depending what you read!

Although, I've played Royal St George's many times and in my opinion Sunningdale Old is the better course despite RSG's always being ranked higher!

You are due a parrot! laugh

Danneth and I are talking about Sunningdale Old. You are looking up Valderrama.

Out of interest my home course is ranked as 54th in GD list!

Woops! i will shut my big fat mouth!

Sunningdale is very neat only been there for the senior open though, not sure if that was old or a mix of both. the Yanks who were co marshalling/officiating with the euro mob loved it.

Personally I don't pay much attention to the actual ranking within the top 100, whether nationally or worldwide -

1) It's not like you're going to be disappointed playing the number 93rd compared to the 21st
2) Personal taste - I prefer RSG to Sunningdale (even though it's normally in far worse condition), because of the history of watching three previous Opens there, and RSG is usually quite a bit more playable (big greens, not too many greenside bunkers).
3) A lot of the worldwide list, particularly in America, are private courses, and the lists are often more the compilers showing off that they have access - eg Augusta, Cypress Point, Shinnecock etc. yawn.

It's interesting that you say that about RSG's, because that's why I enjoyed Sunningdale so much! Thought it was a lot of fun and very playable.
RSG's is always in bang average condition, although when I played it last year 6 weeks before the Open it was unsurprisingly very good.

I'm back at Sunningdale on Saturday so will post again (although not sure if I'm playing Old or New this week) with further thoughts!

I think I find that with most links courses (although definitely NOT Birkdale or Lytham) you can get away with a bit, e.g. hit a slightly scruffy shot and with a couple of nice hops and bounces you've got a good result. Which is a frequent complaint of the pros, particularly RSG, that it's too much of a lottery.

Amateurs, we need a bit of a lottery occasionally.

Sunningdale is magnificent, yes, and friendly.
RSG could give lessons to the R&A about being stuck up.

One thing that always makes me smirk about these Top 100 lists is how The Old Course always gets into the Top 10. Now don't get me wrong I love the place, and the experience is second to none - but the course itself? Excellent, but there are 2 better ones in St Andrews itself (New and Jubilee).

It’s quite interesting how we have gotten used to watching ‘golf’ on TV.

PGA tour 9 tournaments from 10 will have driving areas irrigated and the greens massively overwatered.. Birdie fest for TV. (In between the ads).

DP tour will have narrow fairways, but watered greens, a half decent test.

Ryder Cup, move tees forward, fairway:greens socking wet.. (fantastic for quick birdie match play).

US Open, extremely dry bouncy conditions.

Open, dry but wind dictated. Draw (early/late visa versa) tends to lead the weekend.

Liv.. quite likeing guys having shot 9+ having to make a 6 footer for 900k or nothing.. & they are setting up the course like a PGA major without the 2nd cuts and without excessive watering hence why 2/3 under is a strong score.

The reason a good score in the LIV is 2/3 under is the quality of the golf… the decent players have already been paid a fk ton of cash before they even turn up to play.

On the Sky Sports Golf Podcast this week, one of them said that they asked a caddie what the atmosphere was like betweeen the players. The caddie said it was all very light hearted, the players chatting away and having a bit of fun. Not that competitive!

yeah but if its not the outcry from the whinging sawneyss would unbearable. The rankings are not all on course some other facets come in i think, at least by Ran Morrisset, TD and the other folks at Golf Atlas who i think are on one of the rankings panels.

Confidential guide to golf courses is my go to, been some discounts on them lately too if anyone interested.
