Remember we still have our two best batters to come.
We’ll be into our specialist batsmen in a minute.

I wish they’d get Jack Leach to spend a few minutes with the lads teaching them how to bat.

Utter rubbish.

Big, BIG change cannot come soon enough because whilst it's consistent, this formula is not working.

To be fair it’s the batting that’s an issue, not so much the bowling.
The first 2 hours play today would suggest the bowling is not exactly the finished article.

I agree Broad and Anderson will come straight back into the side, but Strauss need to see what the other options where made off. Bit of a sink or swim moment.

If the batting side can’t even string a few scores together what hope have the bowlers got?

It's like groundhog day cry

I think I'd be content with getting rid of most of this side. Keep Root to bat (seems inevitable he goes as Captain, to what end who knows), Stokes, Mahmood as he seems a decent prospect...maybe Leach if we're being charitable, and Foakes as keeper by default although he's slightly underperformed the hype given to him when he wasn't in the team. Get Broad and Anderson back because regardless of what may have gone on in the dressing room before, we need the anchor of their experience more than anything else right now.

All in all this does feel rather like the nadir of English test cricket fandom since the mid 90s.

Indeed, it`s a stshow all round.

Not being able to bowl out the tail is so frustrating, but we`re not alone in that, as our first innings showed.

I thought the idea was to simply bowl at the stumps, full and straight. They miss you hit.

Tailenders rarely nick off to balls that batsmen nick off as they aren`t good enough to. The edges that they do offer are usually wild hoicks that fly over the slips. Just bowl fking straight FFS.

Cancel the central contracts.

Tell them all to get playing for their county sides and you'll be in touch.

Tell the county sides to get playing games.

Select on form only.

See how they go.

Then start to restructure the county game here to give decent practice through the season.

We have gone backwards in every form of the game, and in very recent memory. Someone needs to have an honesty session as to why and fix it.

Well played WI.

But that's embarrassing. Gubbed.

Maybe that's what Strauss needed/wanted.

England

Bottom of the Test Nation League
Haven’t won in the last 9 tests
Lost the last four series
Five one is probably a loss to (India went home early)

It’s clear that the current crop aren’t very capable. But we seem to specialize in minimizing our talents. A side with Stokes, Jimmy A, Broad and Root shouldn’t be losing so much.

So put your best side out until there is someone better. Root has to take a fall here. He broke Archer and now Wood too. Can’t call a toss decision and makes error after error when captaining.

Time for a clear out.

Root is not captain material. He never has been. He might have been had he served more time, IMO, but that ship sailed long ago.

However, the batting issues are not of his making. He compounded them, but he problems run deeper. And just as dropping bot Jimmy and Broad at the same time didn2solve anything, nor would villifying Root.

The way selection is done is garbage. As is the way they are coached (clearly).

All that said, we've also had success over the last 5-6yrs too. Babies need to not be thrown out with bathwater. But it needs major change up top.

We always make the best player captain, which Root was, and that is wrong.

Root will play for many more years, but needs to just be able to bat

Sophie Ecclestone - debuted at 17. still only 22. 6-36 and some useful runs. What's not to like ?

(The team hadn't been playing well and I honestly expected them to lose to SA and still expect them to do so against Australia who are looking awesomely good. I don't mind watching the ladies game. It has come on in leaps and bounds since the days of Rachel Heyhoe-Flint.)

It was a good final today, albeit one-sided, amazing centuries by both players.
