....If what's been said about their becoming increasingly unmanageable,...
If that's true...they're not "unmanageable". They're unmanageable by Root. Because he has not authority as captain and never has. Bein a captain is way, way more than being the best player in a team.

  • Phasing* these two out is key. Not ripping sticking plasters off.
I agree with the above, we should pick on form. Pick the best XI we have and let them at it. Respect every opponent and when the opportunity arise, put them to the sword every time. When the opportunity isn't there, well at least you had the best talent selected.

The issues with English cricket start well before the players take to the field. The whole structure is crap. And one big factor is how selections are made.

Hopefully the weather will be good here for the NZ and SA tests so I can have a good few beers and plenty of outdoor fresh air/kip biggrin

Strauss said in his interview that they were both "very disappointed" so I don't think its a case of them not wanting to go.
The short interview is worth a watch and does go some way to explaining the thought process behind the decision.

Cannot believe Pope is going on the tour.
I think he’s going on tour because when he first came in to the side he scored a very classy big ton and looked like a potential 50 plus cap batsman who could average over 40. Since then he’s gone backwards like Crawley. I think with the current side if you’ve got a young batsman who has shown he has the ability that is probably as good a bet as promoting someone from county cricket who you are not sure about. He’s not the only batsman who has struggled…you can’t drop them all !

It is certainly a bold selection from Strauss….who knows what is really going on with Broad and Anderson. I remember Vaughan saying I think about two years ago they should never play in the same side again. I think there’s an argument for that. It will be interesting to see how the other bowlers react….certainly you’d really want to see Woakes really make a mark…he was certainly less effective in Australia than the two who’ve just been dropped. There were apparently problems with Ollie Robinson’s fitness in Oz….I can’t remember where I read it but he apparently refused to let the S&C people measure his body fat….accused them of fat shaming him.

Broad & Anderson have been dropped because Root cannot control them. Root isn't captain material, every cricket fan can see that including these 2 bowlers.
Look at how Steve Waugh learned to deal with Warne, he grew a backbone, dropped Warne for 1 test then stamped his authority with Warne back in the side. Will Root do the same with his 2 best bowlers? Time will tell.
If the reserve bowlers don't do the business in West indies then root will have dug his own grave captaincy wise.

Broad writes in a sunday newspaper today, says it was a complete unexpected shock for him and Jimmy. Straus called to tell him and he is completly gutted
He says there was no falling out after Australia, he took 11 wickets in final two tests and that they want to try and a new tact in the WI

Nice to see runs on the board in the WI but we need to be realistic. Presidents XI = junior club cricket.

Robinson out of the first Test injured. Whoda thunk it?

And BBC Sport says:

Neither Anderson, 39, nor Broad, 35, are expected to join the squad if Robinson is ruled out of the entire series, with Warwickshire seamer Liam Norwell, 30, the first reserve.

Who?

Ridiculous.

So has Root used the fallout from the Ashes and stamped his feet to keep two he can't manage on the field off it?

I did google him and he was on the Lions tour of Australia recently. Hopefully Mahmood will play and get some experience bowling.

I'm somewhat disappointed that there doesn't appear to be any TMS commentary for this series. It's probably on Talksport, but I can't be arsed to register over there to find out.
