Crawley really needs a score or to be taken out for a while to find his form then come back. Talent is there but he has struggled a bit.
He needs a score really. We cannot keep chopping and changing so much at the top end. If he was making different mistakes all the time, then he shouldn't be in the side, but he's not.Time for him to show he can start to learn.

And why not? He hasn’t worked in the middle for whatever reason with us. If you are going to go for it - then you may as well go hard.
He plays better in the middle (though granted he's not been tried that much as an opener).http://www.howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/Players/...
I'm not convinced that great batsmen at the short form are a good idea at all as opening test batsmen. The games are quite different in terms of what's needed and I'm not that convinced our players can move between them that well (short form and middle order whackers, fair enough).
We've dicked about with lots of different players in various positions 1-3 and nobody other than Cook in relatively recent years has lasted. All the players have been quite different...they aren't all going to be muppets who cannot learn. This must come down to coaching...
Of course maybe "attacking cricket" means having whackers in every batting position. But I think that tactic will run out of steam very quickly with the better sides. This series has been interesting with both sides making mistakes across the play, and the timing of those mistakes and of the teams digging in, has been good for keeping it on the edge.
I think it's too early to call this a new dawn of test cricket, however. And I think we need to try and avoid getting drawn into that - it will do the team no good to lay on all the plaudits and hail it thus...only for them to start getting pelters when the wheels come off.

That's fantastic! If you're going to have a beer snake, have a big one!I imagine that the Western Terrace were well refreshed yesterday.
Meanwhile, 93-2, hope Pope can pile on some runs.

...Bit of a scrap about an hour ago too, swiftly dealt with by G4S to be fair....
I hope this sort of thing doesn't become a feature of cricket - never seen it happen myself...but am starting to see the preludes to it. Same at rugby internationals. Never saw any of it for decades, but seeing preludes now. Football, of course, I'm more surprised not to see it!

He`ll now be dropped.
Schoolboy run out of Lees, a simple shout of wait would have stopped that nonsense.
Then proceeds to throw his wicket away.
He`s clearly talented but his shot selection is badly flawed.
I suspect you may be right in terms of him being dropped. Worst day of a poor series for him.Schoolboy run out of Lees, a simple shout of wait would have stopped that nonsense.

I still don't think we should ditch players after 3 tests though...and despite the dumb arse run out, I still think his problems are consistent ones.
Plus, I don't think we have anyone that looks materially better to fill the slot (we've spent the last what, 5yrs? 8yrs? Trying to find someone, chopping and changing all the time).

We tried that with Roy as an opener, that didn't last very long. http://www.howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/Players/...

We've tried frickin loads in spits and spots. Lees, Crawley, Burns, Sibley, Buttler (!), Roy, Hameed, Stoneman, even Leach All in the last 4yrs. They've all made daft mistakes. Some have pulled the odd innings out of the bag. There may not be an obvious pick out of any of them, but equally I don't think they're all that hopeless that decent coaching and support couldn't see one or more filling the spot.
They can't all be the next Cook or Root as those players just don't come along every day. But that's not necessarily what we need when we already have one available.

Eoin Morgan is reported to be about to announce retirement from international cricket.
He’s made enough hints of late so won’t be a surprise especially looking at his recent form. Great player and probably an even greater captain. Arguably the best England captain for some while. Smollet said:
