If only he had been 3lb lighter! Didn't expect the win for Garcia
TrueHowever it's clear he battered him, so in the eyes of the people Ryan's the better fighter.
So has he really lost anything other than owning the belt?
Had it been contentious then I'd agree.
Ryan could likely get a rematch knowing the money would be huge and he'd now be favourite to win. But does he really need the belt to move onto another big money fight?
I think in this era of champions holding belts and avoiding fighters what matters is your wins and willingness to fight those considered the best.
That seems to lead to the big money fights.
Just watched YouTube highlights. Well it said it was full fight but it must have been edited by just skipping every other 5 seconds as it appeared to miss most of the important punches
From that footage it looked as though Garcia is now the big draw again in the lighter weights. It was a big gamble for him to come in heavy but it has certainly paid off.

Purposely not making weight is a stty trick.

I wasnt that surprised by the result. I've long suspected Haney's punch resistance isn't great and he got a bit lucky against Loma. He reminds me of Broner. Always going to get found out. Unlike Floyd, who I could never see getting beaten.
From the highlights it looks like it was a great fight. Especially following that build up from Ryan.
The only thing that I don't understand is why there isn't a bit more backlash from Ryan not making weight? Surely not boiling him self down to the weight gives him an unfair advantage when Hainey has took those last few off.
Not a Hainey fan just curious.

I guess the question is whether Garcia was acting the whole way through the build up? He certainly looked in decent shape, and it seems like a deliberate decision to come in over-weight to ensure he wasn't drained. Maybe he learnt something from the loss to Tank after agreeing previously to a re-hydration clause.
In the post-fight press conference he was talking about drinking alcohol every night during training. There is no way that's true as his conditioning looked good so he can't have been cutting too many corners in camp.

Not making weight is frankly cheating. It wasn't even missing weight by a small margin either. Paying a financial penalty and showing up the next day doesn't make it ok and the fight shouldn't really be happening from a safety perspective unless the other fighter is ok with the weight discrepancy. The fight would always go ahead due to business reasons, but where do you draw the line at how much weight a fighter misses by before the fight doesn't happen?
Ideally, they should have weigh-ins just before fighters enter the ring to avoid the rehydration shenanigans.
I think if a fighter can’t make weight gain the sanctioning bodies should prevent the fight going ahead.
Prefight weigh in for all the press etc and then a secondary weigh in before the fight at the same weight. The whole concept of cutting weight through dehydration is pointless and potentially dangerous. At the very least the sanctioning bodies should be enforcing a maximum rehydration across the board.

They would probably die if they didn't rehydrate but agreed it was a bit naughty but Garcia probably was thinking about how weight drain cost him against Tank (which was really the same situation in reverse in a way)
Would it be US boxing if there weren't some shenanigans involved?
Or people just fight at the weight which they walk around at rather than dehydrating themselves to death and then putting on 20 pounds in a day? Would it be US boxing if there weren't some shenanigans involved?
The judges scoring was interesting, one judge scored it a draw which agreed with the commentator scoring. The other judge's scoring was all over the place.

I've never really got why our how this came about. Surely you should have fight at your natural weight if for no other reason than safety for both you and your opponent. g4ry13 said:

The problem with this is that at the top of one division you could get a big fecker from the next weight up that could cut pretty naturally and be all over someone that was only just into that division at the lower end. It's a weird system how they do it but it would be next to impossible to track someone's weight. Some fighters can naturally go up and down and others can be comfortable at a certain weight. An imperfect system but one that would be open to "abuse" no matter what. Bloody humans and their none uniform bodies!
