I guess it's horses for courses, i don't see any kind of noticeable benefit or hindrance to my game by carrying or using a trolley.

I tend to use my Powakaddy if it's a comp/society or i have a bit of time, or there may be rain so i can carry a brolly & stick it in the umbrella holder.

If it's a quick round of an evening or practice i just sling a carry bag in the car as it saves me loading/unloading the car & it's something else to clean.

I have a friend who plays off very low single figures (around 3) he never uses a trolley.

My home course is paticularly hilly & steep in places & i don't really find it difficult or tiring to carry.
That's kind of the point I'm getting at though - you might not notice it, but not carrying your clubs could maybe gain you 1 or 2 mph club head speed toward the end of the round when you're getting more tired (even if you don't feel it).

It's interesting as there are studies out there that show how detrimental carrying a bag can be for not only your game but also your fitness - and the fact that you burn hardly any extra calories by carrying.

https://golfible.com/carrying-golf-clubs/

I play with guys that carry a full 14 clubs and it just makes me scratch my head, I really can't see any benefits other than having to carry due to abnormal ground conditions.
Interesting link. I enjoyed carrying my bag as you have more freedom where you can go on the course and if it is cold you can put your hands in your pockets or mark your card as you have both hands free. This had to change a couple of years ago as I found the weight was making my back ache after 12 or 13 holes even with a double strap bag and then I changed to a trolley and feel so much better after a round.
I saw a report on this study a while ago, honestly it doesn't make much sense, indeed the summary linked above contains claims such as:

"It is estimated that this (picking up, strapping and putting down a bag) occurs approximately 50 TIMES during a 9-hole stretch" lol no way. Maybe 20 - 25 times.

The difference in energy expenditure between pushing and carrying (718 vs 721 calories) is nonsensical, the riding the cart figure (400 calories) makes it clear that the author hasn't distinguished between resting and active energy expenditure.

I would simply say listen to your body and judge for yourself if carrying is causing you excess fatigue or pain. Will be different for everyone.

From experience I expect the additional effort of picking up and putting down a bag is balanced out by the fact you have to walk further with a trolley - less shortcuts available, having to go round greens/tees rather than straight over etc.

I didn't notice a huge difference in tiredness moving to a trolley, but my back definitely feels looser towards the end of the round with my push trolley.

I did buy a lightweight bag with the idea of carrying over winter, sadly my dodgy ribs have put paid to that....

If I play our front 9 to par, hitting every green in regulation, I would have picked up my bag 26 times. And that's a measly par of 34 with 3 par 3's.
So 40+ is probably extremely normal for anyone that isn't a very low single figure golfer!

I'm sure the report has it's errors (the calorie difference for example), but you can't say carrying 15kg + on your back for 3 or more hours can be good for it or not make any difference IMO.

People go to a lot of lengths to gain that extra 1mph in club head speed these days - so putting unnecessary strain on your back seems counter-productive.

Thats great on flat courses but all the undulations on mine (even in the fairways) make taking your hand off a huge risk as the trolley will either fall over, or veer off in a random direction due to a mound/gravity
Mine did fall over backwards a couple of times which gave me a bit of a chuckle as it just lay there, helpless hehe
My dad saw someones trolley and bag trundle down the fairway at Stoke Park and end up in the lake so it always puts me on edge when people have their trolley on "Follow me" mode.

I'd like an electric trolley but the prices are crazy even for the basic ones and it is difficult enough getting a smaller Motocaddy Cube in an MX5 that I don't think an electric one would fit.
I manage to fit my Motocaddy M1 in the front boot of my GT4 with the wheels off. The footprint is pretty small with the wheels off you’d be surprised.
I can only fit my bag without the woods in the boot and the trolley has to go in the passenger seat with them and it all just about fits. Can't really be arsed with taking wheels off etc. Might just have to get another car to go golfing with although that is stretching the man maths a little far.
I put my trolley in the boot of my MX5 and bag with all clubs will fit on passenger side.

Absolutely agree regarding buggies - hateful things! Courses designed for use with buggies hold absolutely no interest to me.

I use a push trolley and at this moment in time wouldn't consider anything else - maybe with age I'll go electric but at the moment I'm keeping it simple!
I tend to prefer to carry if the ground is wet and areas are roped off (basically winter) as I find it easier, then a push trolley when the ground is harder or it’s actually raining as have to carry so much more and can use the umbrella holder to keep the clubs dry. If I carry my upper back hurts and if I use the trolley then it’s the lower back - but both manageable. Guess I will go to electric trolley at some point but will hold off for a bit.

But I love buggies - only use them when abroad but that’s when I play my best golf - which might be others factors such as great courses and being relaxed.

I find a switch off competed between shots - just chatting st with a mates - which seems to help my game. Then switch on when it comes to hitting the shot. And obviously I’m not tired at all so that helps.

Horses for courses and all that.

Anyone tempted with the new Callaway, TM or Ping releases we've seen over the last week or so?

I'm sticking with my driver (Rogue ST Max) but going to get fitted for a G430 Hybrid when they're available - need a 4 iron replacement for 200 yards..

Got a fitting booked on the 13th of Feb, really looking forward to it and should be able to play with all the new stuff. Heart set on the new Titleist driver but I’ll see what I walk out with.

How do you find the RSTM? I’m tempted to pick one up now the Paradym has come out & they should drop in price. Tempted by the LS version if anyone’s got one, would you recommend?

Absolutely love it. Can't speak highly enough of it to be fair - everything you need, super long, forgiving and idiot proof.

This was one of the better hits..

First outing of the year at the weekend. Tried my best to implement the swing changes I’m working on in tough conditions. Also the first outing for my TSi3.

Long game for the most part held up well and ball striking was decent given the conditions. Loved the TSi coming from a SIM. I was a touch concerned going from a 9.5° with a mid launch firm shaft, to an 8° with a stiff shaft, but after a couple of initial sketchy drives it was a proper weapon.

Didn’t score the best but pleased to get a game given the weather.

In more exciting news. My lad who is 12 has just got his first official handicap of 53.7. I need to get him in a scramble team before it comes down laugh

I have read the studies, but sometimes i do like to carry over the trolley as it means not having to get the trolley out the shed, carry it the length of the garden, up a flight of stairs, through the house & up the drive. hehe

I'm reasonably fit (by golfing standard anyway), i think everyone could benefit from a MPH or 2, apart from needing to lose a little weight after xmas gaining a couple of MPH was one of the gym goals.

I spoke with my golf coach during our last lesson & he mentioned the single quickest way to gain club head speed is via technique (proper release, timing of hip release etc.) I'm currently around 110mph absolutely maxed out.
I was watching an old Peter Finch video last night that said much the same.
