Without looking it up I seem to recall his only slump was caused by Hingis?
Well that was worth the risk if you ask me. Sergio always had the stature to win any competition but he's a bit like Tommy Fleetwood and really can't get over the line. Even his Masters win was a playoff with Rose who in similar circles is a plodder.

The theory is, the best ball strikers tend to end up lacking confidence on the greens, because they end up missing more genuine chances. It makes sense to me, I think Hogan even wanted putts to be worth 1/2 a stroke at one point!Sergio always had the stature to win any competition but he's a bit like Tommy Fleetwood and really can't get over the line. Both Rose, and Sergio would win more majors if they had anything like a decent putting stroke under pressure.
A mate of mine from uni met Sergio before he turned pro - he lives in North Berwick and Sergio had been in town winning a big amateur competition when he was off +5.
In true North Berwick fashion though he didn't meet him at the golf, he met him in a chippy later on at night. Apparently Garcia was enjoying his celebration, was very much worse for wear and was struggling to speak
Always admired Garcia as a ball striker, but as a human being he seems to leave a lot to be desired - far too many tantrums when things don't go his way. Things like spitting in cups, wrecking a bunker and taking a huge chunk out of the 9th fairway at the The Old Course, meant I rooted for him a lot less than I would have otherwise.
Don't get me wrong I'm no angel on the course, enjoying a collection of colourful swear words when it all goes wrong, but that is scumbag behaviour imo.

Yes, never rooted for him either, a talented douche, and his racist comment towards Tiger was unacceptable. Speaking of douches I think Tiger matches Sergio, but is loved a lot more anyway. You can look at the stats going back 20 years and I ‘think’ it would show Rose started as a poor ball striker and great short game and then that gradually reversed. Could be wrong Both Rose, and Sergio would win more majors if they had anything like a decent putting stroke under pressure.
In the process of retiring so I’m thinking of taking up golf again. Last played in my late teens about 40 years ago.
I’m not expecting much as I wasn’t very good then and have my eye on a local course that apparently isn’t too taxing or intimidating.
I’m absolutely clueless however about what clubs to look for, how much I’ll need to spend and whether lessons would be a good idea instead of YouTube tutorials.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks.

Crikey, that’s a nasty green plug!Just walked front 9 with my lad who’s slowly getting his back injury fixed.
It reminds of the story of the extremely competitive husband and wife playing a round. He tries to put her off by running across in front of her when she’s about to hit her drive. She hits it anyway and the ball gets him right between the eyes, embedding in his skull.
He drops to the ground motionless and people run up screaming, “OMG, call 911, what are you going to do!!???”
She looks at him lying there on his back with the ball embedded between his eyes and says, “I think I’m going to have to use a wedge.”

For clubs. You don’t need to spend a lot. Get a second hand set of Pings. Any of them that start with a G will do. The good thing about Pings is they hold their value, so if you decide to change as you improve you’ll get your money back.I’m not expecting much as I wasn’t very good then and have my eye on a local course that apparently isn’t too taxing or intimidating.

You also don’t need a full set of 14 clubs, a 5wood or hybrid, 7 and 9 iron, a sand wedge and putter will be a good setup until you start to score near 100. The. Think about adding a longer tee clubs and filling the gaps as you improve. Having fewer clubs removes lots of decision making and allows you to just hit shots.
Definitely get lessons and avoid YouTube swing instruction. There is some good stuff on YouTube about golf strategy and short game.
Golf Sidekick does some great videos for beginners on strategy.

I'll add that ebay is very good for clubs, the ping chart may help, if you're a particularly tall/short individual.

I'd also suggest a golf book, very useful to get the fundamentals right.
A Swing for a Life
I second the Golf Sidekick recommendation. He’s a bit weird, and putting it into practice isn’t always the easiest as it involves putting ego and what you want to be able to do aside in favour of being realistic about what you can actually do. He does a series of ‘break 100/90/80’ videos which are great.
At least, I find it hard at times because I have an ago, your mileage may vary
I’m too beginner to offer much advice on clubs. I think getting something that’s mostly the right length and regular flex was the advice to me, and then go and see a pro who you get on with to learn to swing them properly.
In my (beginner) bag right now I have a 5W, 6i, 8i, PW, 54 degree and a putter. Don’t skimp on the putter, you’ll use it most, and try not to care about looks. I use an Odyssey 2-Ball and I think it’s fugly, but damn if it ain’t a great putter!
For a pro and learning to swing, my preference is to find someone that can show you what a good swing FEELS like, I’m a very feely kinda guy and it’s more useful for me to have a sensation to aim for rather than a result, if that make sense?
As I said, I’m a beginner and I can hit the ball the same distance with a good and a bad swing, but obviously it’s more important for me to keep practicing the good swing, in anticipation that the result will keep improving.
You might not like that kind of coaching as much as I do, but definitely don’t be afraid of trying out a few Pros/coaches to see which one speaks your language

Lamerwood, Bushey, Bushey CC, North Weald as you Said, Channels all gone, the two at mentmore, i know im forgetting a couple. Batchworth sold, Aldwickbury was sold in principle but planning problems. Aldenham is rumoured to have gone to Wimpy homes.
Just had my first Indoor Golf experience - went to Midland Indoor Golf with a couple of friends. It was entirely bizarre turning up to what looked like a mostly abandoned industrial estate just outside Cannock to play golf, but was a decent set up when we got inside. It was basically just an industrial unit with 7 simulator bays set up and a big teaching bay.
Summary would be it was fun, but couldn't really compare to real golf. There were a couple of issues:
- The kit they were using was very temperamental, so we had more than a few shots that just didn't register for some reason that we could never figure out.
- Chipping was... interesting. Being asked to hit an 18 yard pitch into a screen when you have to hit it hard enough for the launch monitor they were using to pick up the shot was a challenge....
Enjoyable couple of hours though, I'd go again, probably just not regularly.

Managed to squeeze a lesson in today, first one for a few months. I’d managed to keep up with the swing path changes we worked on previously, but was really struggling with low point meaning lots of fats and thins. Hopefully with these new drills will stop the early release and mean I strike ball then turf.
Luckily my club speed is around 90mph+ with a 7 iron so if I can get the strike right I should get my handicap down this year to sub 20.
Fingers crossed Sherfield Oaks is open on Friday, the weather has been shocking today

I played 9 holes on the trackman range yesterday, and having done indoor sim only in the past, I prefer the range as an experience. It's a brilliant range, excellent value to be able to play a virtual course, and hit balls and see the flight at the same time.Summary would be it was fun, but couldn't really compare to real golf. Anyone who has used toptracer, is there a similar game mode? I'm hoping/assuming yes.
