What about the disallowed goal? (by USA). In my opinion that was a clear goal.

The unsportmanlike behaviour of the players and the poor refereeing (which could be aided greatly by sensible application technology... like in rugby) is one of the main reasons football really really annoys me. The technology is there to make the refereeing more accurate and fairer and it is not embraced. I think that poor refereeing affects the outcomes of games too much.

They did say the other day that there is a 5th official watching a tv screen who has a radio link to the ref at this world cup,is this the begining of them acknowledging using Techno to help rule games.

It was offside... Although the player shooting was not offside, McBride, who was offside, was standing right in front of the goalie, and thus an active player. McBride was offside, and thus the goal was correctly given as offside...

No arguement that the US goal should have been disallowed.

It was a great game to watch - the USA played out of their skins and were unrecognisable from the shambolic outfit that lined up against the Czechs the other day.

I am totally against hi-tech in soccer.

Soccer is a simple game with fairly simple rules and it needs to flow freely. I don't want interminable delays as video images are checked and rechecked - and in many cases, the end decision would still be contoversial (as it often is in rugby).

Keep the game simple and low-tech.

Cracking match. I'd say that the first 2 reds were definate red cards, and the 2nd yank one definately not.

On a side not the ITV commentary (well david pleat mainly) was truely dire tonight

Soccer *was* a simple game. But now there's so much (money) at stake that it seems to be de rigeur for players to cheat (diving, claiming balls they know are not theirs, pulling hair etc etc etc).

Used wisely, technology need not add any more disruption than the current referee/linesmen calls do, and no matter whether it would eradicate all errors or not, it would easily clear up some of the bum calls made thus far. One would then hope that referees and players alike could be taken properly to task - they all get paid enough, after all, to play properly.

USA played with spirit to get the draw though. Fair play to them for that.

PS Their goal was offside. That's one rule that ain't simple and is too subjective. As a great manager once said, if he's on the field, he's interfering with play.

We should revert back to the old offside rule, as ref's take it upon themselves to interpret the rule as they see fit, often conflicting with each other...

Ive noticed that some refs have a delayed reaction before showing the card,i wonder if this has something to do with the 5th official?.

Murph 7355 - I don't particularly want this thread to become a "soccer technology" debate BUT for me, the beauty of the game is that the games played last night were identical to the game played by kids with bare feet in a South African township. If top flight professional soccer becomes some sort of high tech (read expensive) TV orientated sport, then it will gradually lose touch with its world roots.

If that happens you would see the TV game and the "real" game gradually diverge, just like the way F1 has drifted away gradually from true motor racing.

It is actually physically impossible for a linesman to judge if a player is offside or not.

The reason refeeres in football generally do such a poor job is because the level of sportsmanship is so poor... the players are all dishonest, essentially they are cheaters to a man.

Agreed. May as well include managers in this too, who seem to condone the behaviour.

Eric - in terms of the actual rules being the same, adding a bit of "technology" wouldn't change anything. In fact, it'd reinforce the rules (by allowing them to be enforced *fairly* and give the possibility that FIFA and the other "governing" bodies could seriously penalise cheating and show kids in the playground that it's unacceptable.

Any other parallels between what we're seeing on the TV at the moment and the kids playing in the ghettos disappearred years ago.

Was going to start another thread on this, but I guess there must be better places for footie banter.
