And now Trescothick is coming home ...

Looks like Cook will open with Strauss then.

Vaughy - get back man, you're needed ...

Looks like Bell will HAVE to play then ...

Christ, we're gonna be up against it, Which kinda makes it more fun though, wouldn't want it easy like the last series ...

Frankly they were nuts to take him as hes obviously got serious psycological issues and has been out of form since 05. This was almost bound to happen.

Bell is a real talent, dont underestimate him - he's technically v good and has come on a lot in the past 12 months. Cooky has a fantastic temperament and is very gifted - I'd much rather have him right now than Tres, who has contributed nothing this year. Best for him to go home now rather than be a distraction for the others.

On the upside KP got a hundred and Fred a 60 odd today, against a team including McGrath, Lee, Clark and Bracken.

Time to call up Ramprakash. If he did'nt bottle it on the big stage (tests) he would have been one of Englands best batsmen over the last 10 years.

Yes, Bell looks technically very correct and has all the shots and I agree he has matured in the last year. It's just that playing against Australia it's mental toughness and a 100% belief in your ability you need to possess.

Time will tell if he has mastered that side f the game - I hope he has personally as he seems a good lad and a good team player but McGrath had his number big time in the last Ashes and if the old farmer can make it to the stumps six times in a row he's going to think he can get him out early on. Being a little 'un I wish he'd bat another yard out of his crease against McGrath, forces him to peg his length back a bit. Make the bowler think about ways to combat you, not the other way round. HIs body language isn't the best at times (Bell) but if he has a good knock in the first innings it could transform his series.

Unrep - what's your take on the Chris Adams turn-of-face?

I think he discovered that Boycott was on the management board and did the sensible thing and went back to Sussex.

Or it could all have been a ploy to get Sussex to pay him more.

Lathwell. Forgot him. He was the great white hope. Never happened. Shame.

In fairness to Balderstone he did play professional football too and played in the old first division with Carlisle. If he'd chosen one or the other he would probably have been a bigger star in either.

The biggest shame is Ramps though. He's supremely talented, beautiful to watch etc... Just lacked the temperament at the highest level.

thumbup A good one too.

England are very democratic. We've been captained by people born in;

Italy (Dexter)
India (Hussein, Cowdrey)
South Africa (Greig, Lamb, Strauss)
Scotland (Denness)
France (Jardine)
Wales (Lewis)
Germany (Carr)
Trinidad (Warner, Lord Harris)

And others I'm sure.

They are different spin bowlers, perhaps the pitch suits Giles delivery more than Panesar. Fletcher does happen to have the experience to know about these things.

Complete bollox. Giles has been picked for his batting and nothing else. Same with Jones. So we have the non catching keeper and the non spinning spinner. Fletcher is over cautious and doesn't trust his batsmen. Time to get a manager with balls.

I think they expect the Gabba pitch to favour pace until the 5th day with day 2 being the fastest. No point having a spinner on a fast pitch - but instead go for a batter who turns a few. I'm of the Monty opinion, you need 20 wickets to win a match. Jones v Read is always a close one and not too concerned....until he misses a stumping.

As for missing a morning off work. Thats what toilet cubicles are for! Bacon sarnie at 8am, few coffees, nap at 10am. And repeat!! Until I go out there in 2 weeks - sorry, I should stop the gloating, but I can't!! biglaugh

This first session was always going to be hard for us. The expectation, injury worries, Aussie press and simply the magnitude of the game was always going to cause some nerves.

We need that first wicket now to steady the ship a bit. Freddy bowling now, about time!
