So I wake up this morning, all excited to see how well we've been doing overnight.
Have we amassed a great patch of runs, or torn into the Aussis like a pitbull in a creche?
Erm....No...Australia 310-3 and that well known man of the England attack, Kevin Pietersen is bowling.
Have we really run out of ideas so early on into the test?
Bollocks.

It's not a good situation but you have to believe that if we'd won the toss that we'd also be sat there with a decent amount. The wicket is a dry strip compared to the pacey bouncy affair which was expected - those pesky Aussies, I never trusted them!!
Giles/KP was a pretty poor attack but this was probably to see out the old ball and prevent the convicts from hammering the pace bowlers. Tomorrow (erm tonight) is all the more important now.

Shame Langer didn't go on with it - and amazing that KP actually held a catch! It would have been great to see us 400+ for 1 at stumps...oh well.
Just hope we bowl better than you lot or Strauss & co will score loads on that wicket.
Oh, and I thought Harmison's 1st ball of the series was hilarious!! You wouldn't think someone who plays cricket for a living can get it so wrong...

Do some of you guys write the sports pages for the gutter rags?
The trouble with this website is that you don't immediately know where the posts are coming from. As per the above, there's a theiving convict who I can only assume has boken his shackles, legged it to a primary school and stolen a computer.
The 1am posts from this morning indicate who's supporting the lads - I'm watching again tonight and expect a far better performance.

You mind? Some of us were Barmy Army back when it was just Lancashire lads and Michael Atherton's Barmy Army.
That doesnt however, stop me from being in a pit of despair and depression about the whupping I can now see us taking Ive been supporting and watching English cricket in pits of despair and depression throughout the last 20yrs to have an exceedingly good grasp on their relative depths. This current one sits alongside Nas' effort the last time we hit the Gabba!
I aint kidding myself that we are skittling the rest of em all out for 400 tomorrow!

Cmon - at least let us bat before we sink into despair and depression! It was a v flat pitch yesterday and may well continue to be. (It did turn though and by all accounts KP turned it more than Giles - I still think Panesar should be playing).

Been a fan since the mid 70s. David Steele (who knocked Lillie and Tommo around) was our local hero.Ahh, that was a specific reference to the BA and its origins. Ive been a cricket lover and fan since for as long as I remember. '81 is the first cricket series I can actually remember, was 5yo.

Whilst its fair to say that Englands chances of retaining the ashes are slim to say the least, I don't think you can read too much into thier earlier performance. The conditions were absolutely brilliant for batting & therefore the Austalians would have had to bat like complete idots to make england look good with the bowl.
I expect Australia to make circa 600 runs before delcaring just after tea & have a few overs at us. Thats when the real test starts. We know its a batters track (or at least for a while yet) so lets see our top order.
I'm reckon Strauss is going to be the man & think cook will also perform well. My main fear with regards the batting is with Peterson & Flintoff. Will they take one too many big hit on (cos they're going to be inundated with short shuff).
I'll be watching again tonight.

This is a good point well made, but I'm note sure I have the confidence to say that our lads have the ability, and depth, of batting to get 600 (ish) runs. I dearly hope they can get a decent 450 (ish!) and then hope that Harmison is awake enough to spearhead the attack against the Aussis and that Giles really gets the spin, restrict them to 200 or so and then go out and bat again for another 350 or so. Somehow keeping Warne out against a turning, aging pitch.
