I’ll (hopefully) have the engine out of my 1988 turbo SE soon and I’m looking to replace the tanks while I have good access. What tanks are recommended? Preferably stainless steel or alloy.

I have done searches but some of the information is a bit old.

Thanks in advance,

Dunc.

When I did mine I had them blasted and recoated in a liquid vinyl type substance in Leeds, it was quite a well known fix (northern radiators I think they were called). It protected against further corrosion. I deleted the foam pad they stood on and replaced with thick neoprene that wouldn't hold water and rot them from the base up like the foam was prone to do. They had some pin hole repairs welded in, the tanks have to be fully gas free for this or they can explode.

Interesting thanks for the response, they aren't out yet so guess I'll just have to see how they are. You never know I might be in luck and they've been done already laugh

Incidentally, I hear while the steel tanks can be refurbished and look good on the outside, they do a lot of their rotting on the inside due to water in the fuel

I'd heard very good feedback regarding aluminium tanks made by Axminster Specialist Panels and I have to say that I was really impressed by the standard of workmanship when my tanks arrived. Highly recommended.

I have had some Axminster tanks and they are superb, but none of these aftermarket replacements will fit as well as the originals, I had to do a lot of fiddling with mounting holes, inlets and outlets etc.

My tanks were spotless on the inside and only a couple of thinned patches oon top. It would have been much better and cheaper refurbing mine in hindsight. However I do know some tanks come out looking like seives.

Also factor in the turnaround time for manufacture of the custom units mine were 3 months.

Great responses guys, I’ve been away on holiday but now I’m back it’s time to get focused on this.

Engine will be coming out soon and then the tanks.

Cheers,

Dunc.
