Now the dust is settling we have been talking at work about the weekend's fantastic race. The winner's trophy has a smaller trophy mounted inside - does anyone here know what it represents?

Looking at a few Google images, the little trophy inside the big one has changed many times over the years. It'd be interesting to see them all lined up. Maybe Lowdrag has more info seeing as he's a local.

They did mention this on Radio Le Mans at some point, I think they said it's a replica of the original trophy which was made to be presented to the aggregate winner of what was supposed to be a 3-race contest, although that idea got dropped, but that idea was dropped after one or two races,.

As above. I'd asume this is the reason a team gets to keep the Le Mans trophy if they win the race 3 years in a row (a-la Porsche in 15/16/17 and the reason we had a new one this year).

It is the 1925 Rudge-Whitworth triennial cup, awarded to Chenard & Walcker for its results in the first three editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Or rather a replica of it, the original is in the Museum.
