Reflections on this year’s Revival.
Discussion
Friday and Sunday this year for me. Quite simply an amazing event - long may it continue. My 2 year old son didn’t want to leave even after 8+ hours there on Sunday (‘I want more race cars daddy’!)
We are so lucky to have the 3 world class Goodwood events MM, FOS and Revival here in the UK.

They stopped calling it the Confederate Air Force over 20 years ago. It's called the Commemorative Air Force these days.
They've also never been invited over to Goodwood. In fact I think the only aircraft they have ever brought to Europe was the B-24 Diamond Lil, back in the early 90's.
' Over The Road
This has increasingly become a highlight for us... not only the expanded retail, but the later night drinking and partying.. once again the girls can dance and lark about... in a place where everyone is having fun... no attitude... safe... though this year the cheese on toast van didn't seem to be there..we missed that...'
I took my wife and 2 teenage daughters this year (not really interested in cars) and they loved the whole event but in particular the evening after the racing . Watching Grease on the big screen, different bands playing; and as was stated above they all remarked how great the atmosphere was and ' no attitude'

It really is such a fabulous event - I think I’ve been to every revival bar one year when my wife made an error with a holiday booking (she survived). It remains the only motoring event my wife likes and both my children adore and really enter into the spirit of it. My 11 year old took his outfit so seriously he saved his pocket money voluntarily to get the right accessories.
We always stay in Portsmouth and the whole city is awash with foreign Goodwood visitors - our hotel was full of cheerful Americans, Dutch, French and Germans. I think this adds enormously to the fun and spirit of the event and is nothing other than a good thing. It’s becoming like a reverse Le Mans!
We had the luck of being invited to the ball on Saturday night this year - a fantastic spectacle and event and not hard to see why the Duke manages to tempt such a tremendous entry every year.
There are other fabulous events in the world (Monterey week, LM/LMC etc) but we are truly fortunate to have this one. Just need to get the aircraft back to be perfect.

Some observations
Second part of the St Mary's was stupendous fun. The Kinrara on Friday in the evening sun made all seem right with the world. On track action was magic all w/e
I love that it's now car centric as the movement restrictions for the air displays were really restrictive for catching back of the circuit action combined with the paddock and startline attractions.
Share the annoyance with 'fancy dress' - Flower Power hippies are NOT 'in-period'! The wearing of fascinators (usually as part of contemporary Mum of the Bride gear) is getting mad, one woman looked like a bat had crash landed on her barnet.
Please gentlemen grow some cojones - Over 40s 'chunky' women do not look good in mini skirts / dresses, it's your duty not to let them leave the house looking like that
My o/h was sad that Mastercard hadn't continued the fashion show tent this year and the space allotted for the best dressed comp was lamentably insufficient.
The roving nuns were a sad disappointment, couldn't keep a decent oirish accent or stay in character for long.
The card magician by the Goodwood Motor Works was brilliant as ever.
Finally the charade of the D-Day tribute was a bit distasteful. People dressing up as GIs playing soldiers is not a tribute to the Brits, Canadians, Poles, Australians, Indians, S.Africans who also fought in Normandy. His Grace's comparisons with 1066 were WOTM and the tone of his address came over more as empty jingoism than true patriotic and appropriate sentiment. My dad fought in Burma in WW2; my grandad was captured at the Battle of Le Catteau when the rearguard finally ran out of ammo - they both would have thought that these tributes were clearly arranged by people with little understanding of true commemoration.

That's because Revival is now 'professionally' organised by people that are shall we say........are uninterested in enlisting the help of those groups/organisations that have the knowledge to do it correctly. However, I think the idea was more (or should have been) more about showing the public some of the range of vehicles that would have been massed all around the area of Goodwood in preparation for the Invasion.
I have to say, after hearing the first of his 'addresses' many years ago when going the first time, I now make sure I'm well away from listening to them

I didn't see any problem with the vehicle parade. I'm sure all of the chaps and ladies involved were re-enactors who generally know their stuff and sink their own money and efforts into keeping those vehicles running.
I'm amazed what upsets people.
No problem with the parade had it been billed as 'Display of US forces WW2 vehicles'. '75th Anniversary D-Day Tribute' was just not appropriate. The national 70th anniversary events were moving, this was not.I'm amazed what upsets people.
Re-enactors, be they Sealed Knot, Southern Skirmishers or whatever have their place as a club for adults to keep them off the streets. Whether there's any merit in keeping jeeps etc. running is neither here nor there; they aren't doing it for anyone's benefit but their own, a number of the parade items were less than authentic, anyhow.
I'm amazed at the amount of guff people will tolerate in the misdirected name of commemoration. First refuge of scoundrels etc.
There was just one little thing I noted about the military parade, on Sunday in particular. One of the ‘G.Is’ ( U.S. Army re-enactor) gave a Navy salute ( right hand palm down, against temple, behind eye line, short route lift up and down ). I guess he forgot which uniform he was in. Never mind though, it was still an impressive collection of hardware.
Was watching the live stream on Sunday.so may have not been shown - but In 2014 when they did a similar D Day commemoration they had about 20 D day veterans driven round in Jeeps at the head of the display - I didn't see any on Sunday? Also wasn't there meant to be a parachute drop from a Dakota?

They usually put on a good battle on the actual battlefields , i expect a lot of people probably turn up to watch the performance but come away with a little more knowledge re the civil war .

The idiots responsible for killing airshows have caused this and it has destroyed half of the Revival for me. I am so glad I used to attend when the Air component was as vital a part as the car and “girly stuff”. We are a long way removed from the Hannas

Thank goodness we are "a long way removed from the Hanna's" (not correct punctuation).
Hanna was reckless with possibly an inflated opinion of his ability when he decided to discard good judgement in order to show-off by flying a Spitfire almost at head height at the first Revival. It may have thrilled many but few within the professional aviation community were impressed & it undermined whatever credibility he had earned as a Red Arrows leader etc.
Just imagine if the Merlin had decided to depart its frame as Hanna was boring down towards the finishing straight - think Farnborough & the DH110. I suspect that he may well have been considered an "idiot".
However I agree that post-Shoreham air shows including the displays at Goodwood have become so tame & diluted they are no longer worth the watching.

I'd like to know what kind of clothes chunky women are supposed to wear ?
If like me, you are very very chunky, clothing for the revival is very limited. Rather than go down the route of wearing jeans I wear a dress albeit just below the knees to at least try to fit in. At least people are trying to dress in period clothing
