Yes a tricky one and not for this thread, the only thing I will add it that the intention was for the staff to know in advance to not add to any anxiety that may already exist

Whilst we can probably write-off MM in April, I imagine if we do get to a position where FoS and the Revival can run then tickets are going to be seriously limited (and indeed for the MM if that's rescheduled).

Lots of tickets already sold + pent-up demand for events + quite possibly a reduced capacity = some decisions to be made on who is prioritised for tickets. Membership could quite possibly put you in the best/only position to acquire tickets or attend on existing tickets.

I cancelled membership when I got that begging/crowdfunding email from Goodwood with the phrase “the future of the estate is at risk...”

I’ve renewed for another year. I can’t see the MM being feasible in the slot it normally occupies, but the Government line seems to be that restrictions are going to ease in 9 weeks time, so hopefully the FOS and Revival will be possible next year. The safe, effective Coof vaccines are going to have had time to roll out by that point in the year, so hopefully we’ll be back to normal by then. Let’s keep everything crossed.

Odd one for me now...

Since my last posting, I have spent some time in intensive care with Covid, which maybe affects my view of mass gatherings.

I *think* I shall renew for 2021, but I don't expect to be going to any events.
I notice the Manx government have already cancelled the TT which should have been at the start of June... I really don't see this big outside events being allowed here anytime soon.

No way am I expecting the 78MM to take place in April... Maybe it gets delayed until later in the year, but it might be tricky to fit in.
I don't like the FoS (too many people), so won't be going to that.
I love the Revival, bar there being too many people - I don't see me being comfortable with the crowds - so I guess I won't be going to that either.
I have a partner who is vulnerable, so even if she stays at home, I can't go to an event and risk bringing something home.

Looks like a waste of £240 again... if I do renew, it is only to 'tread water' until 2022.
Gives me a chance to get my classic back on the road I suppose ready for 2022.
None of that is Goodwood's fault though - it is just a bad situation all around.

I’ve renewed but not expecting MM to happen. At any rate it will probably coincide with the third covid wave anyway.

Same here, renewed membership, holding tickets for the MM but I've written off 2021 for mass gatherings or functions, anything where social distancing can't be observed. How can Grandstands be viable with every other seat forbidden?

IMHO for 2021, the only way MM would work is if it was purely members only to limit numbers, but then it's probably not economically viable.

The government I believe have said tiers will remain until Easter 1 week before MM I believe. At present West Sussex is close to being tier 1 and if they achieved that and maintained it then that would allow 4,000 people to attend MM under current guidelines. I just can’t see them even planning for it knowing that if nothing changes 4,000 people only. I doubt we will see a change in the tier system before the new year at the earliest despite the fluidity of the pandemic.

I think FOS and revival may get a look in but at a reduced capacity. However we may know a bit more Thursday as a recent newsletter said stay tuned for the 3rd.

I think the 20k attendees for the MM was supposed to be not far from the break even point - 4k means they would be running at a massive loss, so that isn't going to happen. I would assume that most of the 20k tickets have already been sold and only a few available due to people being refunded. Surely that is a massive problem for GW - advance sales are already going to be way more than will be allowed.

It is all guessing at the moment (which doesn't help Goodwood at all), but assuming West Sussex stays as a tier 1, would I currently from a tier 3 area even be allowed to attend?

How could Goodwood plan an event not really knowing geographically where all their attendees could be coming from (sell to address doesn't necessarily mean that is were the people are coming from - and that would be too hard to manage anyway).

Present plan is to renew for this year, but probably not attend any events.
I think things have to be back to normal for 2022 - if they are not, then I think a full price renewal for 2022 isn't going to happen for me. I like being a member of the club, but do have to see some benefits back other than just a badge.

The break-even point for the first MM was stated as 14K tickets but may have changed since then.

My understanding is that the 4000 spectator limit is specifically for "elite sporting events" gov.uk. MM, FoS etc aren't in that category, despite how "elite" we might think they are!

Large scale ("non-elite") outdoor events are covered by the local authority. There are a lot of controls but no prescribed attendance limit. local.gov.uk

I think this point is a key one. It doesn't feel like too many people pressed for refunds for the 2020 MM, so there are probably 15k+ tickets still 'live', I imagine Goodwood have already burned through the funds planning the abandoned events, running Speed Week and keeping the place going. The break even point is kinda irrelevant next year, the funds have already come in for the event.

I'm sure they'd rather hold off and run it once they can reach capacity, ok there is no additional income for it but that's better than that + having to refund 10k+ tickets to run it with a couple thousand attendees.

It may also hinge on whether those deals that necessitated Speed Week (Mastercard etc) were multi-year, otherwise they could find themselves in the same situation again in 2021.

There is also the build risk - GW spent £1m on the build for members meeting this year and had to write it off. Would you bet that on running an event a week after lockdown may end?

Excellent news.

Always thought the Duke would be looking at a MM in late April/ early May so he's obviously confident things will be a lot different by then.
I guess we'll be in month 6 of the vaccine roll out, weather will be decent and we'll possibly/ probably be out of the Tier system. I am feeling upbeat about it going ahead.

A busy few days for me then as I'm (hopefully) off to the Laon Historique 4 days later!

Roll on 2021

MM dates are the same as the current weekend for the Spa Classic unfortunately, unless the latter changes.

Ballsy.

78MM clashes with another commitment for me and I already have an MM weekend ticket, I guess my chances of getting a refund are slim...
