If you wear jeans, trainers and a Ferrari baseball cap you'll stand out like a knob. If you've got some chinos, leather shoes and a jacket you'll be fine. Some people take it very seriously indeed but that's not necessary, although I would say 95% make some sort of effort to the extent that the blokes in jeans and T-shirts look odd.

I’d second this. The first year I went I felt like I was in the minority not dressing up.

I was more referring to the period piece, rather than just wearing any old tat.

Chinos + jacket is fine by me.

Although the Mrs is dragging me along to the Kennels vintage fair at the weekend regardless.

Good luck with that one. Stuff that 20 years ago used to be a fiver in a charity shop is now called vintage and costs £50. hehe

I have…

1940s fireman’s tunic and hat
Backdated RAF dress suit and overcoat
Tweed suit
Vintage bike leathers with a white t shirt

Need to find an outfit that’s a little lighter I reckon

But yeah some pastel trousers a long sleeve shirt and a woolen vest will see you sorted without costing a fortune. Add a straw hat and brightly coloured boating jacket and that’s another outfit.

Good luck everyone!

Interestingly, google earth currently shows a revival in action, so you can see car parks, etc if you zoom in

agree if you turn up in your man united shirt, trainers and ripped jeans , you will look a proper bell end for sure.. but to be honest dressed like that anywhere other than you sofa youd look a bell end any way . smart casual... dark jeans can work, its a great event, mrs loves it just for the clothes !.. its a dissapointment to stepo back in to the real world after 3 days on site smile

My main concern was whether dressing in period get-up was required, smart dress is perfectly fine smile

Thanks for the replies all.

We went to the vintage fair at the Kennels over the weekend, it was far smaller than I'd envisioned.

It's not essential - you won't be stopped at the gate or anything, it's just that most people do it. Personally, I go alone predominantly as a motor racing fan. I cover a lot of ground - most years I walk the circuit perimeter. Add in all the in-field and "over the road" areas, and that's a lot of steps which I'm not doing in some sort of fancy dress. So I wear some vaguely smart trousers, a plain shirt, and shoes that are comfortable enough for a tiring day but not fluorescent trainers. Just avoid any brightly coloured tee shirts etc - although even then you wouldn't be the only one.

I have been going for a little while now and I would say you need to as a minimum go with Chinos, shoes, shirt and a tweed blazer.( Blazer being the onlything to buy ) this for me along with looking white mechani overalls and a flat cap is probably the easiest and standard attire.

The other outfit to avoid ( not that it sounds like you will ) is the cheap RAF fancy dress outift.

Have a google and you will see plenty of people in the above recommended outfits that wont cost a lot ( £20 ).

First time I visited, I was in modern clothes with a guy from work, and had period clothes in the car 'just in case.'
Within 10 paces, we both felt like a right pair of highly conspicuous tw@ts, and got changed.
Instantly blended into the background!

Go with it wink

called the bodyshop on Monday for a check on the van and to hopefully arrange collection. Completion was targeted to be end of Aug and on the 27th was "maybe a couple of days late" I expected to be picking it up this week realistically assuming he'd take end of aug being the first weekend in September.

bodyshop: Yeah it'll be ready early next week
me: Well it better be the 12 of September is a long way from the end of august when I'll be going to Goodwood on the 15th
bodyshop: i though you'd said you were going on the 18th

He's had the van since the 20th of June so that will be 13 weeks, i know it wasn't a rush job and he was doing it as/when in order to get a labour discount but I wasn't expecting it to be 2 weeks behind schedule and certainly not 2 weeks behind schedule after it was 1 couple of days less than a week ago!

Wife is worrying. Shes a planner so the fact we don't have it back so she can pack it/unpack it and repack it to maximize her ability to take 300 outfits is giving me major grief

Has anything been said yet about any potential cancellation?

Nope, presume waiting for a confirmed date of the funeral before making an anouncement.

The official mourning guidance places no requirements except to be mindful of clashing with the funeral

... I don't think you need to be worried about a cancellation ...

Motorsport UK have said that events should continue if the organisers want - with due respects paid at an appropriate point. One impact there could be is less of the Duke as he may have duties elsewhere given the seniority of the title.

There's nothing in any of the GRRC fora that I've seen to suggest cancellation
