Speed Cameras at Petworth

I didn't know there were speed cameras on the long straight out of Petworth (Station Road). I've just received a fixed penalty notice on a previously clean licence - picked up on the way to the Festival of Speed.
There was a police mobile camera van in the 30 mph zone on the south side of Petworth on the Goodwood Friday morning around 7.30am. I drove by it at under 30mph (I hope), but did not see any more in the NSL zone just outside the village. Sod all to do with safety (as their NIP drones on about), everything to do with cash - which is why they were present on the route to Goodwood.
Seriously unimpressed.
Goodbye clean license.

Not true re the safety thing.. The camera is set up near the fire station as there is a school crossing just afterwards.. Lots of people speed away from the roundabout as they exit petworth. I'd say it was good policing (for a change).
Sorry you got caught though!

Great work from the Police - roughly running pace over the speed limit.

Nothing to do with safety in this instance.

I too got a NIP in the post 36 mph, same place just after 8 am was driving in a queue of traffic everyone must have been targeted. Disappointing and frustrating after 18 years since last points on licence.
Bastids.I was probably behind you.
In fact it was probably you that made me think it was OK to travel at that break-neck speed.
As is often said here, this has absolutely nothing to do with safety and is a sure-fire way of alienating the very folk they need support from. Short-sighted in my opinion.
Hi, a first time poster and it seems I am not alone in having a great weekend at the FOS spoilt with the arrival of a NIP yesterday. Mine was for an alleged 44mph on my motorcycle, also on station road Petworth. I was sure I hadn't missed any cameras and had seen the hand helds in Chidingfold and also on the A3 leaving London...seems they really were out in force. I do always try to keep within the limits in built up areas etc and have had a clean license for 27 years!
I am guessing the hidden police van was somewhere after the small roundabout as you leave Petworth and head down the long straight road? I vaguely recall pulling out to overtake a queue of cars and would have thought I was in a 40mph, not 30 hence the speed I may have been doing, which on a big bike takes a nano second to reach and feels pedestrian. One benefit of living in London is I rarely get to accelerate anywhere, damned annoying to be caught on such beautiful open roads when there weren't even any pedestrians or hazards to be seen just before 9am on a Sunday.
I am assuming that I will get 3 points and a fine if I don't contest it which given the number of posters here would seem futile, perhaps lucky if I *was* doing 44 as a couple of more mph could result in more points I guess.
Does anyone know if it is clearly marked as a 30, I assume it was toward the end of the 30 zone and before it progresses to a 40 or even a 60 out along the straight?

It becomes NSL (so 60mph) only a couple of hundred years down the road from where you were zapped. I beleive that the 30mph markings are clear, though I haven't checked recently. If they were serious about safety, they would have been concentrating on vehicles coming in to the 30mph limit (from NSL) and making sure they slowed down before hitting the town. But then they wouldn't make so much money, would they ....
It is very unfortunate to hear about those that get caught speeding; being a local resident to Goodwood I have noted an increase in the police presence and patrols on the busy days; even outside the headline events held here, sometimes the eye in the sky will fly over and patrol cars could be parked at the Rolls Royce roundabout and New Road roundabout either side of the Motor Circuit.
Without pointing the obvious, I do not know what the beef is about because anyone travelling over the recognised speed limit can and will be liable to be nicked.
On the other hand how can marked patrol cars drive at speed over the recognised limit in built up areas and not showing blues?
I have to have to chuckle because I was recently sent a Birthday card,
Quote. After being sent a photo of his car speeding, Ron sent the police a photo of his cheque. Unquote; what will your next move be?

Without pointing to the obvious, lurking in bushes and catching people at 5mph over the limit just as the posted limit turns from 30mph to 60mph seems, at best, vindictive, at worst, a complete waste of our feckin tax.sixspeed said:
I suspect there were a lot of people caught. I know someone else done on the Sunday, 36 in a 30... quite pathetic really.
It is pathetic and I have written as much to the Chief Constable. It's a waste of our taxes to have policemen hiding in bushes nabbing people on the way to Goodwood for 5 miles an hour over the limit on a section that's perfectly safe. It alienates previous supporters.NDA said:
Folks going to Goodwood are almost exclusively law abiding citizens driving decent, taxed and insured cars.
I'm not saying what the cops are doing is right but what a daft comment! Just because your cars taxed, insured and 'decent' does that mean you shouldn't be picked on for speeding? You couldn't possibly kill any one?! I must remember to get myself a decent taxed and insured car so I can be exempt to the laws too!!Gassing Station | Goodwood Events | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
