Hi I'm 16 and I'm looking forward to my first Goodwood Revival, however I'm not sure what to go as. I'm not really too into the idea of going as someone from the services. I was leaning towards the idea of going as a mod but I'm not sure if thats the right sort of style for Goodwood. I have a grey herringbone suit but the trousers don't fit anymore.

Interesting

I'm going as a Mod, but looking at the photos the service (army/navy/air force) or spiv/gangster (pinstripe suit etc) seems more common but I'm prepared to take a chance on fred perry polo, jeans etc!

You might be pushing it with the jeans a bit - more 80's than 60's mod .......

I have always thought that wearing service uniform is too early for Goodwood - racing didn't start til '48, so the war had been over for 3 years by then. I know there were still a lot of people in the services by '48, but I would be surprised if they still went out in uniform like they did during the war.

Mod would seem to be more correct for a 60s feel - costumes can cover anything from 48-66 - although polo shirt and jeans might just look like you are dressed as you normally would be today, unless you wear a parka as well, and that depends what the weather's like to know if it's a good idea or not.

To be correct for a 16 yr old in 1948 you should probably wear a school blazer and short trousers! Definately not very cool!

Err

Indigo jeans are correct for 60's Mod, and that comes from several people that were 60's Mods

Mod jeans do have to be skinny leg but NOT bootcut. 15" parallel trousers, narrow collar shirt, skinny tie and waistcoat / button up sleeveless cardigan. Match with pointy Italian shoes and getcher 'air cut (no point spoiling the ship for an aporth of tar). That's how my stepson will be going this year. I've done 'country set' for the past 5 years but ,inspired by the Swixtil clothing, I'm doing 50's Rivieira this year

Me too, but on Sat. Original 50s dress that's been restored. Going all out this year.
Try having a look on some of the Goodwood suggested websites for ideas of what to wear, they're very good.

I've never been before, but I'm going on Friday. I'm afraid I don't have time to sort out a decent costume and I don't want to do a half-assed attempt. So I was going to wear normal clothes. Now, all leg pulling aside, will I look out of place if I just turn up in smart jeans and a shirt?

PS - I do understand that dressing up is part of the fun and would partake if I had the time, but I was given 4 free tickets at the weekend and I haven't had time to sort anything. It's fun, but not compulsary, right?

Thanks.

It's about 50/50 but jeans are just so boring, you must posses a pair of chinos or if not do you play golf, golf trousers would be better then jeans... anything is better than jeans. As I'm always saying, chinos, brogues, shirt & jacket, job done - flat cap if you feel "adventurous" wink

You don't have to "go as" anybody, just don't wear jeans, trainers and a Ferrari branded anorak hehe You'll stick out like a sore thumb. p.s. Mods in the 60's would not have "gone out" for the day in jeans, they were more for football and dust-ups, anyway jeans are bordering more on the skinhead era than mods - mods would more likely wear a nice two-tone tonic suit or trousers and a sweater, maybe a Crombie coat and smart brogues from the Ivy shop in Richmond (trust me I was there). Actually most of the golfing fashions these days are very much like what mods wore in the 60's... People get mods and skinheads mixed up rather like rockers and greasers. Anyway it's all a bit of fun not an accurate costume drama!

The 50s biker look should be fairly easy - jeans , white t shirt and leather jacket and some brylcreem , it will look a lot better than jeans and a Ferrari jacket, please please leave that at home for this weekend.

I also have gone for an original 1950s outfit. Really looking forward to it, hope people do make the effort with what they are wearing as it will really add to the day.

This will be my 10th year and you always get about 40% "stick in the muds" who don't frown

That makes more than 60% of us who will enjoy the whole thing a lot more smile and don't forget to look at those who aren't making the effort with disdain !

Hmmm, I've got a black pinstripe suit, a grey/black tie and a white shirt, though no hat. I'm 17 - will this be OK?

You'll be fine. Shoes and not trainers though...........

Its not a competition or fashion show, just people trying to keep the general ambiance of the event in period.

Nope, dont worry - some shiney-ish black shoes.

I was well aware that I had to make four two-hour long train journeys over the weekend, so I've tried my hardest to find something that won't make me look like a tw@!
